Why Can't I Move in the Workshop Mode.

Post » Fri Feb 12, 2016 7:11 pm

Not sure if i'm posting this in the right place, just joined today.

I,m playing Fallout 4 on PC, and i,ve looked at some vids on Youtube for making settlements,

My Q is when I click on the V to bring up the build section, I can;t move forward or backwards, I can spin around, but I can,t walk forwards when let say holding a turret to set it down, Having looked at some vids on YT. I can see people moving around with the turret and can move any where and place it were ever, But I can only stay in the one place, this makes building such a pain to do as I have to exit out of V to move to a certain part to place something else, Am I doing something wrong, I know I can hit the X button and it will move but there no control over it, is there any way to do this so once I open the build section I can move anywhere.

are you using left-handed setup on keyboard? that may be why because move is hard mapped to wasd from what I heard.

ok i went into the game and set my key bindings to default, and now it moves around when your in build mode, but when I changed the wasd back to the arrow keys, it's not moving again, so i guess i,m just going to have to lean wasd, which i,m not happy about becuse i can't play a game like that ha ha ha, do you thing this will be fixed in the future?

Your problem is that you are using the arrow keys for in game movement.

I do the same.

I utilise a cumbersome workaround.

when i want to build in workshop mode i hit esc and temporarily reassign the forward movement key to an unassigned key.

I find that I am able to build satisfactorily with just the forward movement and mouse manipulation, rather than reassigning all the movement keys.

Currently i reassign to the square bracket key [ as it's right next to enter which is now used to interact in Workshop mode.

I also take the opportunity to do a hard save while I'm in the menu.

When I'm finished i reverse the process of temporary key reassignment.

It only takes a moment but if you do follow that method avoid accidentally reassigning the esc key as it's a nuisance to reset.

The reason i do a hard save is because sometimes I will attempt to highlight an item like a sleeping bag and unwittingly have a whole surrounding structure highlighted and instead of scrapping the bag the whole building section will be scrapped with many things ending up in the dirt. User error.

Thanks pugsley100. I'll do the same, but I hope the devs find a better solution.

Another option is to use a controller for building mode if you have one.

Also in some circumstances if you want to chase down a settler in Workshop mode, or similar, without reassigning keys you can hit the auto movement key which in my case is X

There are key reassignment utilities available.

I personally use an AutoHotkeys script to reassign the numpad keys to favourite weapon switching but I doubt it would be responsive enough to redirect the movement keys.

There may be other mods available though.

Ah... the problems of the "Master Race". :)

I don't even understand 1/2 of what you're talking about.

I thought they'd addressed the key binding issues, didn't they? Don't tell me this patch broke that again.

I believe the arrow keys are still hardcoded for choosing the building options.I have never changed the keybindings in FO4 since I find them fine as it is. Just needed to get used to where some of the keys are. I would still like that all keys are not hardcoded since I do know that a few players like to use gaming keyboards like Gopher and it is a pain for him with AutoHotKeys freaking out quite often in VATS as well in build mode.

By the way, not sure what stage of the game anyone is at but the arrow key movement creates problems if you have to follow anyone on a tour of a building.

As instead of following the tour giver the up arrow key causes the interaction dialogue to start all the time.

So on those one or two occasions in the game where a tour is an option it's best to reassign the up arrow until the tour is over.

No, it hasn't changed with respect to movement.

It's been like that from first release.

The problem is that you are able to reassign the ingame movement keys to, in this case, the arrow keys but the developers have neglected to follow that through by making the key reassignment also work in Workshop mode.

yea that would be the best, although you option is good pugsley, it's still a pain in the ass, switching back and fourth, so hopefully they will fix the issue, because I have not really got into the building part of the game and i know its a big part of the game, I have been mainly going out and getting my ass kicked around, but i would love to be able to get into the building part of the game if it was fixed. maybe i will just have to bite the bullet and start to learn with the wasd, until it ever gets fixed.

Actually if you do start building you may find that a whole game day will pass before you have to switch back your movement keys, (probably because you have run out of an item and have to go and source some more). or have to answer a distress call.

Presently i am doing a revamp of settlements and because of all the rug and comfy bed building (I've built hundreds of beds) i have run out of cotton.

So have had to start junk collection searches again, which will take quite a few ingame days to accumulate enough cotton to continue on.

Just wanted to add that I am in the exact same boat. I always use the arrow keys for movement and had to use "x" to move in build mode. This can probably be fixed in a mod or patch just like they fixed the keypad issue early on.

This is truly frustrating, and massively irritating. The more I think about it, the angrier I get. This isn't Bethesda's first game, is it? (I know it's not...)

I guess they figured that, since they're hobbling console players, they may as well do the same with PCers and this was the only way they could think of.

It probably comes about because the game is really designed with the game console market in mind where they probably make most of their money.

As compensation us pc players get the temptation of the tilde key, which I do my best to resist. Only use it at as a last resort to cope with glitches.
