Why can't we sell stolen items?

Post » Sat Dec 10, 2011 8:49 pm

I find it really stupid, I steal about 3000 gold worth, and I can't even sell it. Rendering it absolutely useless.

Why stop us selling stolen goods?

you can sell stolen goods, but not to regular shop keepers, only to fences accessible via the thieves guild.

Fallout 3 and New Vegas did it better. You could sell stolen loots in different towns. Now you need to join the Thieves Guild.

You can sell stolen items to Fences (Theives Guild) and I think there is even a Speech perk for selling stolen goods. Can't recall.

Oh, probably because that would ruin the purpose of Thieves Guild fences....

I think I might have run into an issue with Tonilia (the Thieve's guild fence NPC). My character currently has a stolen gold necklance in his inventory but it doesn't show up when I try to sell to her. I'm not sure if she doesn't want that particular item, or if it's a bug. It has me wondering what to do with the necklace though.

the fences can be found by joining the theives guild, I won't say how to join though as it will spoil it for other people

I understand where your coming from, how could shopkeepers magically identify stolen items (unless they were they're own of course), but then thieves guild fences would have no purpose, and it does add some immersion to the game in my opinion.

It's already extremely easy to make money in this game... How much handholding do you want? Honestly...

I think at the very least you should be able to sell it in different holds. As for what we're given, you could always roleplay that your character is overly cautious and will only sell to a vendor who has experience with stolen goods.

I was honestly hoping they would do away with that in Skyrim, having seen it not matter in FO3. The Oblivion system was always ridiculous and still is. Like you said 'magical spell of detect theft x1000', so....why do they not turn me in? If they INSTANTLY know stuff is stolen?

I honestly couldn't care about the fences. Why couldn't they just make them buy/sell stuff at better prices for stolen stuff? Or sell thieving kit (lockpicks and potions etc)
Oh well...

They also could have included non-thieves guild related fences that would require extreme favours to use their services.

Yeah.. because if you stole a goddamnd apple or a bottle of skooma and even if you don't get a bounty, suddenly the entire population of Tamriel will know it's a stolen item!!
Surely the poor victim sends a message to everyone that his/her precious little apple has been stolen and also gives a precise description so everybody can recognize it!
FffUFUFUufUUuUUuUUUuU :banghead: Why can't we have the good old method from Morrowind?! If you tried to sell a stolen item to it's previous owner, you got the bounty. It was perfect.

I think Morrowind had it best. You could sell stolen items to almost everyone. But if you, say, tried to sell an item to the person you stole it from, they would attack you.

So much for non-psychic guards. Really?

For people who say the Thieves Guild fences will be useless, I say, FINE. Why? Because if Bethesda is building a fence system on a broken and illogical system of theft, they it deserves to be irrelevant and redundant. If I steal something in a cabin far away from civilisation from an old lady who turned out to be some kind of Necromancer and killed her, I expect to sell all those items without a problem?

Why can I loot a barrow and sell all of their items and not of a cabin of a necromancer? How can a merchant smell this? I hope this is patched out on the console, I don't want to be stuck with this crap forever.

What happened in morrowind with other stolen items? That were not their own possessions? Could you sell stolen items to anyone?
Also I like your avatar photo :teehee:

Ummmm.....I can sell stolen stuff to regular shopkeepers. I sold a blacksmith his own steel ingots that I had stolen the night before once (and I had none in my inventory previously so they were definitely marked stolen). Not in the thieves guild or even been approached by them.

It's the same crap from Oblivion. I'm sure they won't patch it since it's not a bug or glitch which needs to be fixed. It's simply an illogic game element. Bethesda relies on modders too much to clean up their [censored]. They know ppl will mod it, then why bother with building a new system (actually old, from Morrowind)? -_-

@ Dragliza:

Yeah, you could sell stolen items to every merchant. But if you sold it to it's previous owner, you were [censored] up. :D
