Why can't they point out a safe bed & storage at the start?
It's been a seriously annoying thing at least as far back as Morrowind. If unowned containers aren't going to respawn or dump items, why don't they tell us that? Every long term Bethesda fan has a horrible box ate my stuff story, and one of the top questions every time a new ES/FO comes out is where can I stash my stuff without it vanishing.

Right across from the saloon in Goodsprings is a house where Easy Pete sleeps. You'll find two beds in there, one of which has a footlocker at the end. The footlocker is safe, as I've been using it for over 130 hours. I sleep in the bed, and keep my gear in the foot locker. No problems.

Enjoy.

The last thing fallout needs is more hand holding.

As far as I can tell the safehouse containers are safe. I've stored stuff in the safe at the goodsprings school,
Novac and the Lucky 38. I've never had an issue with items disappearing. One of the games good points.

I like starting out with nothing and having to work to get what I do have and the fact that if I am careless with my stuff someone may just steal it from me. Life's tough like that and if it wasn't a bit tough making it to the final I would not like this game. It's not all about getting stronger and becoming a better shot as you level, it's also about having to struggle to get by and sometimes losing what you had and starting over. It's sort of the whole reason I enjoy RPGs is the building of my character in as many ways as possible.

I'm sure those nice wastelands who find a box filled to the brim with tons of awesome supplies and loot are just going to leave it there to be nice.

The Tops, High Rollers Suite, winning 7 500+ Caps. (Tons of storage, Bed, water source, radio.)
The Tops, Presidential Suite, given in storyline. (Tons of storage, Bed, water source, radio.)
Ultra-Luxe, Bon Vivante 11 250+ Chips. (Tons of storage, Bed, water source, radio.)

After playing games designed by the guys at bethesda for years now, I have come to expect certain things from their games. One of them is that the spawn system is reliably predictable. You can count on your stuff staying put for three days. If you return to the cell where you left the gear before three days have passed your stuff will be there. If you rest in the same place all the time then you have no worries of your gear disappearing.

you can lower weight by making repairs to the gear you collect and eating the foods you find. I usually leave most of the junk I find where it is unless I need cash, then I head to a merchant stopping at various places picking up stuff I found. I have no qualms about fast travelling or waiting outside a shop for a few days to sell gear. hardcoe in this game has cost me huge mountains of caps since I have to eat and drink my profits, but money is easy to collect so I don't mind.

As for there being a ready made safe place to live, well I don't agree. The atmosphere of the game doesn't lend itself to safety. A savage wasteland filled with crazies out to loot and kill doesn't feel safe. I could see the doctor letting you crash on a gurney and letting you use a chest in a hallway, though.

There's plenty of places to store stuff.. you just kind of have to experiment for awhile to see what's safe.. Goodsprings almost anywhere seems safe.. I put stuff in boxes just to see if it would disappear.. I put stuff at the gas station, Victors, The doctors house and the shack that the dynamite prospector guy sleeps in.. After 40 hours of gameplay it was all still there. And by that time I had the Novac Room so it no longer mattered. Then if you get friendly with Factions you get places from them.. I have The Followers Shack, NCR's shack, Lucky 38.. Lucky 38 while looking neat and having all that storage space is actually kind of a pain just because of all the loading zones.. I've just kept everything at Novac and run back there to drop off gear. I haven't even been to the NCR shack or actually inside the Followers safe house yet. I really don't know what the respawn rate on objects is .. Heck there's dead powder gangers still laying around Goodsprings and that dead messanger guy in Primm is still there even though I looted him millions of game play hours ago. I guess you could use those dead guys as storage too.

EVERY ABANDONED SHACK EVER!!!

However i usually use Wolfhorn Ranch. Is a pretty sweet place, find it, and use it. Or any other shack. Oh or maybe use the Lucky 38 Suite, or the Tops suite, or clear out the Ultra Luxe Rooms, tadaa, lots of beds. Maybe you could clear the Gomorrah too. Dunno, but every abandoned shack seems to be good for me.

I travel as light as possible. I carry just a few weapons of differing types, and their repairs back ups, but sell almost everything else. The thing I seem to be hoarding the most are caps.

I found the Novac room to be a useful place for storing the handful of things I didn’t feel like carrying, but the Great Khan randomly spawning at the foot of my bed after a nice sleep kind of ruined the place for me.

Right across from the saloon in Goodsprings is a house where Sneaky Pete sleeps. You'll find two beds in there, one of which has a footlocker at the end. The footlocker is safe, as I've been using it for over 130 hours. I sleep in the bed, and keep my gear in the foot locker. No problems.

Enjoy.

THIS.

I plat'd the game and never used anywhere else but Easy Pete's joint. He's a good room mate as well. Always says howdy. I don't have a GECK so don't know the respawn details, but dumped a few beers in the closet and they were gone later, but the footlocker was safe and held all my stuff through the end of the game. Plus you can sleep there. Like you are an invited guest. :)

For the OP. I agree with you 100%. The player housing in this version is very sketchy. They could have done much better. I really don't like how you get a room at a hotel (other than Novac) or a compt room at a casino and you get a "My Bed" but all the containers are red. Grrrr.

You pack rats know that if you pick up ED-E in primm(if you're a pack rat you can get the parts to fix it np) + anyone else you have an additional 500 lbs of storage walking behind you at all times, right?

Sell junk you don't need beyond that like useless weapons and armor.

those people that think you dont "need" a place to store your things are wrong. those people are playing a different fallout then im playing. yes, i NEED a place to store my things. its not hand holding if i want to have a place where i can put my 40 hours of gameplay stuff that wont be stolen out from under my nose. congrats on having high strength or not loosing your items you put in random containers or being a hardcoe fallout junky. thats just not me.

i want a simple megaton home. period.

Wasn't a problem for me. There's a hotel room in Novac. Problem solved.

safe storage is another form of power acquisition: same as levelling up and getting skill points and perks, or increasing wealth level, or getting rare unique guns.

It shouldn't be given to you at the start it should be earned.

Honestly I think the solution is to remove the ability to use non-housing containers, and make players earn storage space.

I usually use the gas station in Goodsprings for storage, and seldom bother relocating all that stuff since even with companions it would take multiple trips. I am thinking of adding a campfire somewhere in the vicinity since I get tired of going down to the ones near the wells, but other than that the location is fine.

Because it is a game of survival... if you can't figure out where to sleep then you're going to die.

It would not be handholding if they said container type "x" does not ever respawn. Then you find a place with container type "x" and use it as your hidie hole.

I use the room next to where Easy Pete sleeps to store my stuff until I get to Novac. I haven't had a problem with loosing items there but should I be worried about storing my stuff there?

This won't happen. I have been leaving stuff in containers all over the map. It is always there when I come back.

Here is what happens with the containers. Some are static in their loot, some are leveled so that the loot is different the first time you open the container depending on the level you are at. However, once you open the container the first time, it sets itself so it will not change.

If the containers shows a Blue (or non red as I use a Blue HUD) so it does not indicate ownership by someone else, then it is safe for you to put stuff into. If you put something in a container that is owned, then the ownership of the item may transfer.

You can not put items into containers that are set to Respawn so it will not get lost that way. Someone might want to test the Legion Containers and I don't think the vending machines respawn, at least I have never seen one get more soda in it.

As for early game locations to store stuff, why don't you go take a loot at Victors House in Goodsprings. Then, you can rent a room in Novac for the entire game. Heck, if you do it right, the room is free.
Also you could try Wolfram ranch just north of nipton I will have totest that if it is safe there. There is a bed in there to sleep.
