Why can't they point out a safe bed & storage at the sta

So far there are two quite obvious player houses I've run across:

The room in Novac

The High-Roller Suite in Lucky-38.

If you want to find a place to store stuff why don't you just test places out. Just place worthless items in all containers you would want to use and then come back later and check to see if they have disappeared. I'm not sure what the respawn time is but I think it probably is 3 days.

PS. Finding a place to sleep at the beginning is easy since there is two beds in one of the houses and one in a of the trailer in Goodsprings that you can use. There is a mod in the mods forum that converts the Schoolhouse into a home and he says the containers in there don't respawn so you should be able that as a home even without the mod.

The crates in the gas station lasted me from the point I cleared out the powder gangers and got that merchant out of there...till I got the 38 room.
I'd consider the spot safe enough untill you hit the 38 room.

I really wouldn't say this would be hand-holding. Just have some folks, I don't know, Sunny Smiles or the Doc or really anyone in Primm direct you to an unclaimed home, that isn't really a looker but would at least provide some place to sleep and leave your stuff.
If the engine has to remove items from containers in unclaimed areas (arguably for realism purposes when those places repopulate with raiders or such), there has to be someone in the game who tells you about some place where this does not happen, in character.
That's not hand-holding, that is just a role-playing direction.

What the hell are you guys needing to store that early in the game? Am I the only one the sells everything I'm not going to use? Am I missing something here?

"Going to use" is pretty subjective for many people. :D

I've got half a dozen guns, I've got dozens of different crafting items (since the new crafting system actually uses 90% of the junk that drops), I've got 40+ sarsparilla (gotta keep them for the star caps), vast amounts of foods (both healing & crafting), clothes, repair & doctor kits, etc..... Just got to Nipton last night, and the lowest I've been able to trim my inventory (which includes starting to sell some stuff I wanted to keep) is about 155/220.

Like I said..... I'm a packrat. :)

(In FO3, my house in Megaton had thousands of items in it's lockers. Just in case.)

Who would have ever thought it might be hard for a scavenger/bandit to find a safe place to keep a lot of wealth in a post-nuclear wasteland full of bandits and scavengers?

If you're going to talk about role-playing: a safe place to store an enormous amount of wealth in the very same wasteland where you yourself are rummaging through houses, buildings, and dumpsters looking for stuff doesn't make a damn whit of sense.

I never kept any valuables in my megaton house for the same reason: if the game were internally consistent, I should be getting robbed all the time.

I get it with just some house in the Wasteland, true. But who in their right mind would try to rob you when there is a huge metal ball with circular saws, scissors and all kinds of nasty appendages watching your house? ^_^

If the shoe were on the other foot, and you found a house in the game with a locker that had tens of thousands of caps worth of weapons and ammo in it, guarded by a single Mr. Gutsy, would you let a wisecracking, hair-cutting, water-spewing butler robot stand between you and all that sweet, sweet loot?

I didn't think so.

People really shouldn't rag on folks trying to find some decent, functional storage and place to sleep. We all RP in different ways so lighten up 'ya hear pardners?

Anyway, here is a great option early on that I have been using:

Spoiler
use the lockers and safe in the Goodsprings School for storage. According to the GECK they're not flagged to respawn and should be safe. In fact all containers in there do not respawn. Then, as someone already mentioned, just drop in at Victor's to sleep when you need to.

If you're on PC and want a little mod that adds a simple bedroll, radio and map marker to the school I put one on The Nexus. http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34771

I agree with the role playing crowd, it may be frustrating to have to pick and choose what to carry, but thats why weight limits are in the game, if you could carry everything whats to stop you from simply grabbing everything you can and selling it for loot?

In relation to the OP, yes I found it a bit frustrating. Goodsprings is supposed to be a major "rest stop" on the highway because of the spring. You would think they would offer room rentals for wayward travelers. I sort of improvised by stashing my gear in Easy Pete's house, south of the Saloon and using the bed for resting, which in a way is sort of cool that you can pick practically any place as your "makeshift" home, but it would be nice if a developer can tell us whether or not it's safe to store gear in random containers...

To OP, I tend to agree with alot of other posters about no more hand holding. I have found loads of places to sleep and store stuff safely in 12 hours of gameplay. I always keep a save where I store stuff just in case the game glitches.

yeah, but "crafting" [workbench/campfire/reload bench] requires a LOT of different stuff that is not all that common. So, I save ALL the stuff even though I'm not high enough level to actually craft most things yet. And while a lot of it is lite weight, it adds up real fast!!!

Plus needing to carry multiple weapons 'cause you are always running out of ammo for one and have to switch, plus repair of armor and weapons requires duplicates for parts

So tell me, what should I drop from above list???

Mail it to yourself.

Novac should be one of your first stops, be nice and helpful and you get a room free of charge.

I'll say it again, the bunker near the memorial close to Goodsprings is a perfect little house. It has a bed, storage, and a work bench. You may have to fight some Radscorpions to get into your home and may also need to defend against Deathclaws but it should be a safe place to store items.

The last thing fallout needs is more hand holding.

But I have all these extra hands in a box in my closet. They are lonely. I think... Or maybe they're hungry. I can never remember...

What does this have to do with hand holding? Some of you hard-core guys are plain silly.
This is about a mechanic that will make your stuff disappear if you put it into containers. I don't need my hand held in the game. Hard/hardcoe first time, no spoilers, no wiki... I can find places to put my stuff, but I just want to make sure the containers aren't keyed to reset. Cool? Why does that make me some Fallout [censored]?
Just come out and say that the containers reset after X amount of time, or they're okay to use, or, even better... someone will sell you a room with X amount of storage for 5 caps a night.
What, should I be forced to play the game blindfolded using only my toes next to make you guys happy? Why is renting a room or wanting to store my stuff somehow against the Fallout religion? And if you're saying it's not "safe" in the wastes to keep stuff... that's okay too. Then make it part of the game. Right now it's just a messy game mechanic, no matter what you're pretending it to be in your head.

And for the OP... I've been shacking up with Easy Pete, too. Place to sleep and there's a footlocker on the floor of the spare room, which I've been keeping a close eye on. I guess that's why he's called, "Easy."

I just don't like those nights he comes home drunk and tries to touch me. :nope:

In GoodSprings, just use Victor's shack. He never goes inside it anyway.
Novac has that room you can get too.
Also, Casinos will give you safehouses. And there's plenty of abandoned places in the wasteland you can use too.

I'll get there eventually. Like I said, my inventory's been riding the line of maxed out since I hit Primm. I'm just now working my way east from Nipton (my save time is closing on 9 hours), leaving behind corpses with most of their gear. :ahhh:

It's not really hand holding.
I play a low strength character and I need someplace to store accumulated ammo and stims and whatnot.
For the sake of realism, I'd be happy to rent a room. But having no idea if my stash will vanish because of some game mechanic involving containers that's not fully explained, well, that's not cool.

Ya, well, it is what it is. It's okay that you want to know if the containers reset, but we don't know until someone's looked through the GECK and reported back so you have to experiment. I play a low ST character too and can only lug around 190 pounds so I know what you mean about needing a place. I've moved into a shack with a ton of storage and an ammo workbench. I haven't bothered to go through the GECK to confirm that all containers are non-respawning, or which ones should be avoided if they aren't, but I did go back to my shack to confirm that my stuff hadn't disappeared out of the locker and it was still there so I'm going to assume that most of the containers will be like the ones in FO3.
