Why can't we wield a Sythe? or a broom or a waste basket

Post » Wed Jun 09, 2010 2:40 am

In Oblivion I always remember the first time I saw a grain Scythe. I immediately picked it up due to its vicious look. however I was dismayed to find that I could wield what would have been the coolest weapon. Assasins Creed let you pick up brooms and wield them like swords (although rather unrealistic when you stabbed through someone with a broom, it was still fun). I know it is impossible to make every item interactive, but if they can make 3-D pictures of every item in the inventory why can't they just let you run around and swing the items--- even if it was something as useless as a pewter mug.

You have to draw the line somewhere.

as long as they don't justify putting in less types of swords and bows because they added a broom as an equipable item. this sounds like something some one should mod.

Frying pan has been a traditional weapon for housewives in JRPG (a bit of exaggeration there). I always wonder why I couldn't hold a broom as a weapon...

I would like for random items to be usable as thrown weapons at least.

Scenario: bar fight. No lethal weapons for fear of guards locking you away for murder. grab nearest wenches broom, a mug of beer, and fight. throwing plates, etc.

I mean maybe forks are a bit far, but just about anything in the game could realistically be used as a weapon. buckets? maybe not needed. brooms/scythes? probably should be equippable.

basically if it seems like it could be actually useful in a fight, you should be able to use it. of course non-lethal weapons like broomsticks should cause fatigue damage to knock out the target.

It should take leaf out of Severance: Blade of Darkness' book. Every loose object was wieldable and throwable, even the severed limbs and heads of your enemies. Nothing quite like dismembering a zombie then beating to death again with its own arm.

I don't think it's all ridiculous. I mean, if a horde of goblins corner you in a house and the only thing around is a spoon, by the Nine fight with a spoon!!

I don't think it's dumb, I just don't care. Sorry. I'd imagine that anything that wasn't designed to be a weapon would fail massively compared to something that was.

Pointless and a complete waste of time/resources to come up with the various combat animations for each utensil/tool. Not to mention that most of these would break rather quickly and would be present for kicks rather than having any real function.

I think we should AT LEAST be able to wield a pitch fork, scythe or hand scythe as a make shift weapon. Whenever I saw a scythe, I IMMEDIATELY wanted to use it as a weapon. But alas, I could not, such a shame.

Won't there be pole-arms in the game? That would make up for scythes.

And what does a broom do? Add chance of disease? Or make someone start sneezing interrupting attacks?

Broom effects are... Clean: (cast on strike) "remove dust and debris for 30 seconds), Ridicule: (constant effect) drain personality 100 points on self. Attack value: 1.

The first thing in Oblivion that dissapointed me was that I could use the bones on the floor of my cell as a weapon.
Those bones are absolutely useless then, no value, they can't be ground up into bonemould, they were just for decoration.

But it would be great to be attacked by villagers with pitch-forks, torches, hoes, shovels, etc.

It's not a silly idea at all to hold anything. Really I'd think it would be built into many games with physics objects in the world by now.

Come to think of it, I've yet to see a game that really lets you pick things up with your hands. Up to this point it's gravity guns out the wazoo.

I want to be able to hold just about any tools I can find (scythes, shovels, brooms etc.), I've always wanted to do that in a TES game.

Well with the jobs in Skyrim that may be possible. Such as being a farmer or something(I think they said you can farm)

Well, scythes and other long-hafted "weapons" would be wielded more or less the same way (read: similarly enough for novelty weapons in an RPG) as polearms like halberds, which seem to be a confirmed weapon type.

Mugs, sickles, and the like could likewise use the same anims as one-handed weapons.

If the objects themselves aren't present and wieldable, a relatively straightforward mod could make it so.

Every weapon has an ending move, it would be dumb to expect for the devs to make an ending move to a broom or a bucket. Not going to happen.

Great idea, I fully support it.

Pointless and a complete waste of time/resources to come up with the various combat animations for each utensil/tool. Not to mention that most of these would break rather quickly and would be present for kicks rather than having any real function.

Games in general are "pointless and a complete waste of time", not serving any real function. What, suddenly killing ogres is serious business, while broom fencing is not? Get a perspective, please.

This will go extremely well with overall feeling of sandbox RPG TES is.

About finishing animations - *everything* is one of these five things, from melee perspective: dagger/knife, sword, club, pole, chain. Or combination of things. Broom? Something in between of club and pole, may use animations for warhammer. Scythe? Two-handed axe. Waste basket? Club. Et cetera.

Sure, it is obviously won't be in Skyrim, because this apporach requires a bit more planning from game design standpoint. Oh, and it includes spears and other polearms as a side-effect.
