Why do companions go AWOL?

Post » Thu Jan 14, 2016 5:39 pm

So far I've lost Valentine, Curie and the newspaper lady (I can't remember her name).

Neither of them are at any of my settlements, the detective agency, diamond city or vault 81.

They've simply vanished.

Any help with this matter will be much appreciated.

Curie I noticed likes to wander in the Vault 81 Security Office area.
Curie was never in Vault 95. That particular vault is a nest of bad guys.

If one releases a companion a ways away from where they should go, all manner of things can get them bogged down, from bad pathing to combat which may not end until the play snuffs all the bad guys.
I was watching Piper trying to walk into walls in Vault 81 on one visit.
I took to Releasing them to their home locations by going to those first, then releasing them rather than have them get lost.

Ok, I made the correction from vault 95 to 81. I couldn't remember which vault it was.

My question is:-

How can a companion be released from there home location if they're not there?

If you don't tell them where to go when you're parting, they will go to their previous location, so far I know.

However, if someone gone missing from their spot, that means they'll have a quest for you. Just like my Piper yesterday. It turned out there's a mission involving her in Diamond City and she had moved there on her own.

As for your case, let's say Nick isn't there, try to look around any possible spots or talk to his assistant .
