Why do we compare gaming systems?

Post » Fri Jun 03, 2011 12:04 am

No, no, don't type your response yet. I am not asking you why your you think your system is the best. What I am asking is WHY you tell people your system is the best.

Why do we have system wars? Why must we fight? Do we WANT more people to come to "OUR" side to enjoy the game more (all while we tell them how little we care)? Do we want to make people jealous? Do we want to make people feel like idiots? What do we get out of making others feel like idiots? Is it for power, glory, and fame? Is it boredom? Do we care about eachothers preferences or don't we?

Why. Think before you post, be thoughtful, be open. Thanks.

Because some people have this natural instinct to be better than everyone else in whatever way they can, even in pathetic ways. I do not accosiate myself with these people. Who are mostly PC elitists.

So "gamers" that have nothing better to do can brag about something that is trivial. And I use the term "gamers" loosely.

Then there are the kids who only have one platform and mommy won't buy them more, so they defend their POS with all their soul. It's sad.

My problem is when other platforms affect the platform i like... Like Crysis 2! I dont care if people just play xbox360 or ps3 ( im a pc gamer :D ), its just the fact that when a game is made for the 3 systems, PC tends to be limited.... So thats when i get pissed!

Because people like to brag. If you didn't know, humans are mammals. Mammals have competitive instincts. Denying those is to make yourself less human.

Personally I think it has to do with most people only have 1 or 2 platforms to play on, and they are trying to justify why they bought their platform to themselves. Each platform has it's pluses and minuses, to me it looks like this.

PC: + best graphics, most user created content, only home for RTS, most DLC is free or really cheap, free online gaming
PC: - expensive, lack of AAA games (typically you only see 2-3)
360: + best online community (at least the biggest), best multiplatform games
360: - almost all shooters, games have a short life span, controllers are flimsy, system failure was really high, pay for online, not that many exclusives (Halo and Fable... crap Fable is on PC too so just Halo)
PS3: + best linear RPGs, Really good advlt exclusives, free online gaming, a lot of artistic games
PS3: - multiplatform games kind of svck on it, online community is kind of small, installing games to the hard drive
Wii: + Best exclusive games (sorry Mario,Zelda, and Metroid are still the gold standards of gaming) , most innovative, best offline multiplayer
Wii: - No 3rd party support, online really svcks, crappy technical graphics

Granted that's just my opinion.

Because some people have lives that are so sad and empty that they need to fill the void with a proverbial "pencs measuring contest." Gear-heads do the same thing with cars, nerds do it with computers/consoles, and I wish both groups would disappear.

If you got a PS2 game ported to the PS3 and all PS3 games were PS2 ports how could you express your displeasure at this without drawing a comparison between the PS2 and the PS3?

honestly?

I do not. I know my system is not "best" for this game. I know the PC will always be better tho I would rathe rplay on a console and save myself all the hassle of upgrades, conflicts, horrendous DRM and whatnot

And I know PS3 and 360 have strengths that are played up by the developers and weaknesses that are to be blamed on the manufacturers' short sightedness but ultimately masterpiece-level games will come out on both so....meh

I'm on a 360 because of Halo, Mass Effect and GoW

I replied that way because his comment was not well written. I am having a hard time figuring out what it is he is trying to say and I was hoping he would elaborate a bit better.

translation

if thew games you play on your platform of choice (say PS3) were technically inferior to what they could potentially be because they are made to be also played on another, less powerful machine (PS2) .....how could you not compare the two if you wanted to express you resentment toward that situation?

honestly, does it matter? will there be a FPS coming out anytime soon that will look anyway near as good as Crysis 2 or apparently having a similar unique approach to FPS gameplay?

If you see it as a comparison the situation is clear, just replace "ps3" with "pc". If you are a pc player you know Crysis1 cannot be played on a console, technical power and controls are different. But nowadays you play pc-games that are console games at the same time. Not saying it is necessarily a bad thing, but most games as pc-players can state (especially shooters) feel a good bit "dumbed down".

I figured that's what he meant, but what he was posting was basically a "I'm mad because the PC version is a port of a console". The topic is "Why do we compare consoles?", which is not the same thing as "I'm mad because the PC version is a port of a console."

I'm not picky different games for different platforms.

PC- RTS, Single player Shooters (old school CS had to many cheaters and I've had a hard time getting back into MP on PC because of it)
360- MP shooters, fighting games (cheapest arcade stick)
PS3- RPGs, simulation sports games
Wii- Platformeres, puzzle games

Each platform has it's strengths and weakness, for instance platforms on PC feel clunky, where as, RTS on console feel like they were made for the mentally handicapped. About 11 years ago I would have said shooters were a PC only thing but Halo, came along and changed all of that for me.
