Becuase unlike Fallout 3, New Vegas actually had choice in the endings (Four major endings plus loads of different variations on minor quests and storylines)

Would have taken too much time and effort on Obsidians part to have created a post-ending world that could reflect all of your choices.

And Broken Steel fixed nothing. It broke the levelling system that it tried to balance out with bullet sponges, gave us a selection of rediculous cheat perks and gave us a really stupid 'final mission' ie: Collect an endless supply of cameras and batteries. It railroaded us even further into helping the BOS (Something we'd been forced to do in the main story) and invalidated our heroic sacrifice at the end of the main story so that we could become little more than an errand boy/girl.

I do really want to be able to play on after the final mission, as I'm the sort of person who likes to finish what I start fairly quickly, so leaving the final mission till after I've done everything else, or not doing it at all doesn't sit well with me.

However, given the potential ramifications of the final mission I can appreciate that it'd have been difficult to fully do justice to those decisions.

I do not.

Do everything before Hoover Dam, afterwards is too different and you have the potential to screw up the endings (ex: make Primm a prosperous town then slaughter everybody post-ending).

Money and time. You'd have to rehire all of the actors and spend weeks to develop AT LEAST four different stories. I say at least because of Yes Man. You own New Vegas after that and there would've been a chance where you dictate how you controlled New Vegas. Or maybe that itself would be the Yes Man story.

I don't like it when games let you continue after the main story has ended. It makes the ending feel insignificant.

Broken Steel didn't fix Fallout 3. It literally Broke Fallout 3's story.

All the Fallout games including Fallout 3 end. Unlike all the Fallout games Fallout 3 only had two outcomes to the game. No real information on what happens to the people and places you encountered in the game. New Vegas like the Originals has multiple outcomes for each of the multiple ways to play the game, each with multiple explinations as to what happens.

Fallout 3 you could simply remove the endings and keep going. But as I said it literally broke the game. It makes the Enclave being in the game completely poinless. Which means the entire game was made pointless. Fallout 3's ending svcked not because it ended, but because of the way it ended. A crappy ending is still better than no ending.

To have free roaming after the ending would mean you have to remove all the possible endings, which would make the entire game pointless.

Right. It is a good idea to add freeplay after main quest but in FO3 it is poorly done. For free play it is better to let the main quest unfinished than to play broken steel.
In FONV it is difficult to add freeplay since the world is small and there would be little left to do, even less than in FO3 and it would be very difficult to add freeplay for each ending (cesar dead, Kimball dead, legionor NCR ruling, Kings, great khans and followers wiped, powdergangers and fiends ruling ot not...) And honestly I am glad to end the game and start a new one after some time. The end is boring when the courrier becomes too strong

It wouldn't make any sense to do this since enemies aren't scaled in New Vegas. There are already enemies that you would have no chance defeating at the beginning of the game.

Continuing after the ending seems to be another consequence of the one thing Bethesda despises most; consequence. They decided to play it safe and allow people to keep playing on after the end of Fallout 3 even though it further destroyed the already lackluster start. They don't want to limit the player in any way, though this practice can severely damage story.

Obsidian did the right thing in giving New Vegas a definitive ending. The huge amount of choice adds for a huge amount of variation which adds to replay-ability, far more then Fallout 3 allows.

I'm always amazed by these threads. Why is playing after the ending supposed to be a good thing? After all, an ending is exactly that, a way of wrapping up the story and showing what difference you have made to the Mojave.

If you don't want the game to end, then hold off playing the endgame quest. You know, that part of the game that warns you with a whacking great big message box? Do this, and you can play forever!

New Vegas is all about choice and consequence - how is it possible to do this if the game reverts to default and allows you to carry on playing as if nothing had happened (Fallout 3 and Skyrim)?

Exactly! The game gives you ample warning every time you're doing something irreversible. And I think Lanius' gear is the only thing that you can't get from elsewhere.

Boo.

It's a forum, and FNV, while awesome, is a finite game. Some questions and topics are gonna come up more than once. So what?

Not a clue. And something else I dont get, if people have a problem with playing after the main quest is over ...... then don't. Why take away options, if someone continues to play after the main quest and the world doesn't make sense because of it ... so what, it's that persons choice. I hate the idea of taking away options that someone doesn't have to use just to please those that don't like them. Sort of like fast travel, if you dont like it, don't use it.

Because that's not how the game works and frankly you're in a minority, just don't finish the game's ending and keep playing; it's not like you want to actually see the affects of your choices on things so just don't finish and keep on mindlessly killing [censored]. T

You can always complete the final mission for fun, as it has alot of action and [censored], but always save b4.
