Why go darker?

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 10:28 am

One of my favorite things about Oblivion was the fact that it was bright and beautiful. It made exploration fun and gave it a more fantasy-like feel. If Bethesda makes it darker, wouldn't it just dull down the experience of playing? I can understanding darkening the dungeons and nights, but daytime should reveal Skyrim's natural beauty.

Edite: Nope, still on page http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1189635-darker-edgier-atmosphere/.

There will still be bright, lush landscapes. There's the Pine and Fall forests too.

I know it's supposed to feel a bit grittier, but it should still look nice. I don't want this game to look more like Fallout; it just seems to take the enjoyment of exploring the environment.

I don't think darker is the right word for what people want, I think they just want to move away from high fantasy. As much as I loved LotR, when someone goes out of their way to copy it, the product just feels uncreative and bland.

I don't think the light level is what is meant by most when speaking of having, "a darker tone" to the game.

*Its more akin to Grim vs. Goose, if you catch the meaning; (at least the common perception of Mother Goose).

To those that apparently are taliking, "light level"... I would love if Skyrim copied 'Bard's Tale' in that respect.

Not quite. Players want darker dungeons because they find it odd how every one is lit by torches throughout, even if all it's inhabitants are mudcrabs. It's unrealistic and breaks immersion. Besides, remember how interesting it was to explore http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IX_HFHngSMY in Pokemon? I mean the Zubats kind of ruined the experience for most people but if you get past that, it was a really great feature.

Don't know that it will be darker, just harsher and more brutal.

because cyrodil looked like WoW with a bit better graphics. it was impossible to feel any anxiety or foreboding when everything looks like it was ripped out of one of those princess fairytale books kids get read before bed time to give them sweet dreams. its just stupid looking. shivering isles had some areas that could pass as creepy but there was nothing in cyrodil itself. when i first played morrowind and went into the ashlands and a dust storm kicked in, it really drove home that you were out in a desolate wasteland. same thing with fallout 3. oblivion was like a disney theme park. blech.......dont make me puke.

Like I said in the OP, I actually want darker nights, but daytime should still look nice and vibrant. I used the name because I enjoy stealth combat / assassinations. I also want to see better torches, and maybe lanterns that can be set down to light a dark room without getting in the way.

Everybody goes "Harsh, rugged, barbarian world", but really, I don't think it will be that "dark", in fact there will be enough civilized areas. Still, the wilderness and the ruins will look old and wild.

EDIT:
Wait... you mean darker nights...
Well, it only makes sense that a moonless night will be pretty dark...

In real life, i always feel very cautious if im out in the dark at night.. In real life you can barely see at night without some light from street light... I don't expect street lights in Skyrim but the point im trying to make is that maybe, by making the nights really dark, it could in some ways add intensity and caution of your surroundings to areas..

Because dark can be beautiful too. Like Opeth, or Agalloch. A pine forest backed by an overcast sky, to me, can be just as beautiful as a lush green maple forest in midsummer.
