Why did Bethesda focus so much on consoles but not PC?

Post » Tue Dec 01, 2015 1:55 pm

When I had a PS3, we all thought they were neglectful of that platform since FO3 and FNV were so horribly unplayable on the PS3, especially after you bought the DLC and their promises they put some "patches" in (which turned out to be patches that simply allowed you to install broken DLC that made the vanilla game even more broken).

This go around they dumped on the PC players hard with key bindings that are awful for a modern game, I mean I have 10 yr old games that have better keybinding control and UI design. And I can't even think of a game I own that has hard-coded buttons! Who does that???

For a company, they just have a higher than normal tolerance for sticking it to a big section of their customer base. What many other companies would consider unethical, they are ok with. To me the ugly part is how they will say "we are working on it" but not actually do anything about it. My guess is we are stuck with these keybindings. Auto hot key is your friend, not Bethesda for this issue.

The creation kit isn't for consoles. Of course they have to make a console to PC concept, not vice versa, as consoles earn the most money.

And 81% of those Steam gamers like the game and don't think Bethesda hates them.

.. No? Just because this is a consistent complaint, that doesn't mean that the complaint is an invalid one. Quite the opposite.

Yes, we have to accept that the game was developed for multiple platforms, but guess what; so are other games. It's called "porting" and Bethesda is getting worse and worse in porting their products, even though not only the PC sells more, but also generates more exposure from the mods you can create in it.

It's logical for the playerbase to continue to be baffled at this. If anything, I would be alarmed if the playerbase were suddently accepting of the fact that there are keybindings which are hardcoded.

It's because consoles are easy. One machine made out of the same parts as every other machine using the exact same version of the OS. Pc's are all over the place. You can have the exact same specs as someone but with parts made by completely different manufacturers. You could have a crap load of different types of software installed that does different things. There's no way to account for all those different systems. So with pc.. no matter what they do, they can only do their best and hope that the game runs well on most systems. With console... They know exactly how their game should run.

But I create mods, only play on PC, and have had no issues with this 'worse and worse' porting that you speak of... My game runs incredibly smooth on Ultra settings with no real problems on a PC that doesn't even meet the minimum requirements.

I am 100% accepting of whatever 'keybinding' thing you speak of.

I think the biggest problem with people on PC has nothing to do with hardware, because obviously the game runs super smooth even under the required specs, but more the software, primarily the os.

People use their computers for tons and tons and tons of stuff and they get bogged down with all sorts of junk over time.

Playing off of a fresh OS that I had just installed the week before, my game ran flawlessly. It is far from a large enough sample size to say that proves anything, but my hypothesis is that the game runs great on PC if your PC runs great. Not the brute force of your hardware, but how truly clean your PC runs.

But I am no computer expert, so take my hypothesis for what it is, just a theory. I did spend a year of my life working as a computer repair guy though, so I am not a total idiot.

Oh, the DarN's UI, good old times:-)

For Skyrim, SkyUI has become a neccessity for me, but with Fallout 4 I can live with its current UI, much more than in Skyrim times. That is not to say I will not expect F4 UI overhaul:-)

So if Bethesda really is moving to console, is all the heavy streamlining really necessary? Things like lack of player freedom, limited dialogue choice, etc shouldn't be left like that just for consoles. It feels like they think that console gamers are too dumb or impatient to read full sentences or think about their choices ingame even though plenty of games with depth are popular on console (dark souls, in terms of combat). That may just have been an issue with development though, spending 5 years with 5 year old technology and not having time to focus on every aspect of the game, but I don't know it feels like they want it to be closer to more mainstream shooters. Bethesda's games at their core were never meant for pick up and play sessions though, and they should be made to be immersive rpgs that svck you in for hours as they've always been.

Yeah, on past pc's I used to do fresh installs quite often.. They do get bogged down with crap. As I get older I care less and less about keeping my pc up to date. Mines so far behind now that I couldn't even run fallout 4. I mostly just use it for internet stuff and playing older PC games. Since all the games I actually want to play come to console these days there's really no need to even bother with my pc.

Limited dialogue choices is a totally different topic and has more to do with having to write something for every new option. It is more of a debate of whether Bethesda should have spent more of their resources on writing vs other parts, and doesn't have anything to do with PC vs console. So it is a very valid point for a totally different topic.

The full sentences has nothing to do with being too dumb to read, and I find it a bit offensive that you would say that.

It is an artistic choice that improves the pace of the game and makes it easier to stay in character. If I am playing a character that is a real 'Goody Two Shoes' and always does the right thing, then I don't want to have to read through a sarcastic option that says, 'Oh, I would totally love to get shot up by mutants for you' or a mean option that says, 'I don't have time to help your hole in the ground settlement, you are probably just going to die anyways'. That kind of stuff throws you out of the character that you are in.

And then when I do play a second playthrough, if the game is like New Vegas and has everything written out on the screen, then I already know everything my sarcastic jerk character is going to say, because I had to read it when I was playing a goody two shoes character... No surprise, so why even play the game a second time when everything was shown to me the first time.

The sarcasm option is great, because it is always a surprise, it wouldn't be fun if I always read it first.

I ran Fallout 4 on my 6 year old pc, simply because buying more ram was cheaper than buying a Playstation 4.

Sorry, but you're dreaming if you think that a modded title on console will be anything like it's equivalent on PC.

Both consoles already have performance issues running the game as is, never mind adding a significant amount of texture / mesh upgrades.

In addition, anything that requires a separate executable to launch the game is also off the table. I'll also be interested to see how load order is changed too, an essential part of running a stable, modded Bethesda game.

It's awesome that mods are finally coming to consoles but it's going to be limited.
