why did bethesda waste time with kill animations when they d

the only thing i want animation wise, is an animation to get into benches (like the table in dragonreach) without making it look like my char has testicular elephantitis.

The only complain i have is the maces finishing move, where you go into 3rd person, hit an enemy, they fall on their stomach to the ground and the camera keeps following the body for 3-5 seconds. Just stop instantly when the body hits the floor, otherwise it gets in the way. I almost got killed by a mage shooting ice at me while I was looking at the dead body in the finisher.. Make it shorter!!

That and mace decapitation... they literally used same animation as sword and axe, so your guy is slicing their head off with a mace. What. The. Hell.

I think I would prefer finishing moves to watching an NPC get out of bed a little bit faster

Same with me. I like the finishing move animations.

Sadly it's a sign of the times when it comes to game mainstreaming. Little Timmy Consoler has to feel special when he kills something, so the finishing moves are in place so that he can jump around and tell his parents how cool he is. Before he turns his character to center the little arrow in his compass that shows where he needs to go next.

The open world fighting games that they develop for consoles are all about gimmicks. Quick kills are just one of many safe, and easy selling points that they implement to appeal to those who are easily pleased.

Looks fine for me, especially considering the maces I use all have blades? Or at the least, sharp edges through which I could effectively get a magic head slice..

Finishing moves are cool because it makes the game more than just the same slashing animations over and over. But yes, I do like to feel like my warrior knows how to finish a person off when they swing their weapon.

Also, you would rather have morrowind's 'swish swish swish swish swish splach swish swish swish' etc ?

It doesn't even have to be for the people who are easily pleased, just that to a lot of people, slow motion fancy weapon moves look cool

shields on back would have been nice. only about umpteen zillion games managed to do that except apparently a TES game.

I have a particular dislike of all gimmicks.
I always think that is effort better spent at actual content.

I do not like finishers one bit.
They get old fast, the animation is poorly (often my weapon will hit entirely aside the target) and it pulls me into that horrible third person where the camera for some reason is just behind my neck.

Shields on the back are also super realistic, it's so damn easy to get it off your back when you need it. But these games aren't first person fantasy simulators ya know.

Since Bethesda and Id software are working so close together these days, i'm surprised that the amazing animation work in RAGE didn't trickle over into Skyrim.. bit of a shame :/

I'm willing to bet that most of you don't know the true gory glory of good kill animations.

I could have done without cutscene animations if we were given instead:

First person horseback riding.
More sophisticated companions.
Spellcrafting.
Nonmagical staffs that you could fight with.
Attributes.
More developed factions.
Bigger cities.

Or, indeed, any one of those. Cut scene animations strike me as a useless frill.

What made me roll a melee warrior type was blocking and... yes... finishing moves. Sorry dude. =) But the more (animations) the merrier! Certainly wouldn't mind having added a few of yours.

Me too, hehe. I had an archer, but everytime I watched my husband play I saw him do these awesome moves, so I rolled a two-handed hammer wielding paladin instead. Finishing moves never grow old, they always put a smile on my face.

but you wouldnt get that if they didnt include finishers, there are certain people that work with animation only so if they didnt have to make the finishers then they would jsut work on other animations

Being a warrior, I enjoy seeing my character perform the Fallout 3 fatalities. Never get tired of them. I wish there was a gore fatality like Fallout had. Ahhhhh, driving my enemies before me and hearing the lamenation of the women..... :D

The only other animation I could ask for is stabbing. Why does Bethesda hate stabbing so much? In every TES game there is only slashing and hacking and what not. In Morrowind your backwards power attack was a stab but Morrowind had terrible combat so it didn't really matter much. I want to lunge my sword into a bandits chest like in the finisher moves but I actually wanna do it manually.

Really? We didn't have kill cut scenes in Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind and Oblivion, but we did have most of those other things. If i wanted to watch a movie, I would. I want to play a game.

IMHO, would have been cool to have kill animations with a bow and arrow. Just like in fallout where the camera hovers around the bullet as its flying towards the target.. Would have been awesome if the arrows did this every now and then.
