Why did everyone hate Oblivion?

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 9:10 pm

Oblivion is one of my favourite games ever, Just like Morrowind is and Skyrim is becoming.

Saying that, my opinion probably doesn't count............... I managed to enjoy Two Worlds lol

Hmm Oblivion...

pros:

- graphics were state of the art back then, really nice setting
- guilds were extremely cool
- loved the game all in all
- nice addon, nice house content

cons:

- the dungeons svcked and looked the same every time
- the main city was uncool and you could see it from all over the map, so you felt the world is not so huge (as it was)
- those Oblivion gates .... too many, too boring, and always red sky nerve wracking
- voices, every 5th npc sounds like the ones before
- too many villains on the road

But still the best RPG on the XBox360 imo.
Can't wait to see if Skyrim is better..... (is it?)

I didn't OP - it is my favourite game. However, it is slowly losing this title to Skyrim.

Only time will tell.

pretty much this.

my usual preference list is:

Skyrim > Daggerfall > Oblivion > Morrowind.

Level scaling, and it simplified many things in Morrowind. I liked other aspects, but level scaling ruined it totally.

It wasn't the worst game in existence but vanilla Oblivion was pretty mediocre for an Elder Scrolls game in almost all aspects with many terrible design decisions. I did put many hours into it but I never felt anywhere near as entertained or drawn in as Morrowind. I was bored by 2 months. The rare jewel was the Dark Brotherhood questline. Skyrim really redeemed in many ways, it feels like the true spiritual successor to Morrowind.

Level Scaling. Made the game more or less unplayable for me most of the time. If I decided I wanted to play as a theif for a while and ended up not leveling main combat stats I pretty much died to rats after a couple levels. That wasn't sensible or fun.

I think it's acting up to be honest!

At some point all that have played Oblivion loved it 'cause it was the latest 'o TES, but as with all things in life at some point boredom sets in and all of a sudden the game is utter crap!

I LOVED Oblivion for a long time!!!!

Just a question, you all seem to hate it for one reason or another but I bet you all still put over 200 hours each into it? If you all hated it that much why did you play it? Fair enough it had its flaws but why rag on it so much?

Levelscaling svcked much more then in skyrim. And we could put 200 hours into the game because there we mods for the game and these mods fixed a lot of stuff.

On PC there was alot good mods that remove level scaling like FCOM,OOO,MMM and making npcs non-generic

I tried to like Oblivion, I really did. The handholding spoiled it for me, the quest markers, arrows showing you where to go and who to talk to, compass "helpers", text boxes telling me what I think. Didn't feel like I was playing it, more like I was following an ingame walkthrough. Ignoring the main quest and doing other stuff helped, but all quests were subject to the same helping mechanisms. At the time, I didn't have enough knowledge to know how to disable all that stuff. Leveling mods helped, but it was too late for it, I'd lost interest. When you lose interest, that's it.

Hate is a strong word, but yeah I didn't quite enjoy the level scaling, the voice acting and the poor lore implementation of Cyrodiil. However I did enjoy playing it, I put a good 300 hours (with mods) in it and I think the Dark Brotherhood and Shivering Isles quest lines were brilliant.

<3 Oblivion.

i never did much in the main quest though, in fact i think i only completed it once. Across 7-8 different chars.
Point is it wasnt the main quest that did it for me. But i think that is kinda why i love TES now. its all the stuff you get over and above the main story. everything is covered.

TES games beat any rpg realeased for the better part of the last decade, many times over, and Bethesda seem to be the only remaining rpg producing company that cares about their customers / fans.

I loved "Morrowind" and I loved "Oblivion".

Many of the complaints regarding "Oblivion" seemed to centre around it not being "Morrowind 2".

It might have been the 3rd installment of the Elder Scrolls but for many it's the defining game in the series.

By the time "Oblivion" was released people had spent so much time in "Morrowind" they knew it backwards.

They'd start a quest and head off with an 'Uber-Weapon Shopping List' to pillage the Ghostgate Treasury and aquire the Lord's Mail.

They were gods in "Morrowind" gifted not just with almighty loot but omniscient knowledge about the game, how it played, what to do and where to go.

Can you then blame some people for feeling like Satan cast out of Heaven in Milton's "Paradise Lost" when they found themselves in "Oblivion" and were forced to play as a normal character?

To a degree it's the same case with "Skyrim".

It's different to what they were used to and it's normal for people to both fear and resent change.

Not everyone hated Oblivion. Those that never played Arena, Daggerfall and especiall Morrowind usually liked Oblivion. Most everyone else though who played Morrowind saw how utterly awful it was. There's a reason for this though. The primary designer was booted to the curb and Todd took over adding consolitis.

Oblivion was a FPS hack and slash that tried to trick RPG fans into believing it was in any way an RPG. It wasn't. It was a terrain simulator.

Here's my own personal issues with Oblivion:

-No interesting places to visit (in stark contrast to Morrowind's varied environments)
-All of the caves/dungeons looked almost identical
-The combat svcked horribly bad (did in Morrowind too)
-The leveling system svcked horribly bad (did in Morrowind too)
-The main story and writing were pretty subpar all around
-The facial models made most look like Cookie the Clown
-Level scaling; probably the largest issue with most, even though it's just a big problem out of many

not evryone, alot ppl think that Oblivion is one of best games ever

Yeah, until the honeymoon of the 360's first "RPG" with "modern GRAPHICS GRAPHICS GRAPHICS" wore off. Sorry, most of those scores were way too premature.

Bland environments, same dungeons, disappointing Mannimarco quest and the one that made it hard to play for me is the level scaling. Don't get me wrong, Oblivion was great, it was just not fun after a while.

Why I disliked Oblivion? Lack of the more unique characterclasses with non generic skills like crossbows, spears, mark and recall, throwing weapons. Combine that with a incredibly generic fantasysetting not matching, in my opinion, coolness of the Legion that it had in Morrowind. Last but not least total lack of politics compared to the mainquest and Houses of Morrowind.

pretty much this.

my usual preference list is:

Skyrim > Daggerfall > Oblivion > Morrowind.

I never got the chance to play Morrowind.

I got Oblivion with my Xbox 360 - never did I feel as immersed in a game. I didn't complete it for 5 years! Just so much to do.

Skyrim is heading the same way for me. It improves on the formula in every way for me.

I disliked Oblivion due to the level scaling and removal of the little things which made Daggerfall and Morrowind special, like factions, stats, spells and weapons. The 'dumbing down', if you want to call it that. Suprisingly, Skyrim has been incredible thus far and Skyrim is even further removed from the game I wish I was playing. I understand Bethesda's design philosophy making these things behind the scenes, but you lose a sense of control and individuality. For everything Bethesda has removed they've made up for in setting - Skyrim is fantastic, but I wish to christ they'd abolish level scaling and give me back my character stats.

I loved it, so many crazy quests

getting stuck in a painting!
getting stuck in someones dream!
getting hijacked on a boat!
stealing an elderscroll :D

but most of all starting random fights with guards, running into the fighters guild, so that they join in, running back outside, so they all follow you, run into the mages guild so they follow you, start hitting everyone, so they all attack each other and not just the guards, run back outside, fight everyone, but after that most people will just stand still and get sent 50 feet by the few that are moving

but everyone has their own opinions
