Why did everyone hate Oblivion?

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 1:37 pm

Just a question, you all seem to hate it for one reason or another but I bet you all still put over 200 hours each into it? If you all hated it that much why did you play it? Fair enough it had its flaws but why rag on it so much?

I think the reason OB doesn't inspire the kind of love that MW did is for several reasons - firstly the huge hype before the game which promised so very much (radiant AI) and then the game itself didn't deliver on many levels. Secondly the rather generic setting. Thirdly those blooming OB gates which trashed the landscape and contained pretty linear sorts of quests rather than an interesting alternative world.

I liked oblivion. just less than the two previous ES versions. Now I like Skyrim best. Yay me.

Oh, and level-scaling.

Some of this is still present in Skyrim, the Imperials and Stormcloak quests for instance, exact same thing every time.

I read the reviews, watched some gameplay videos, saw a friend play it. Never bought it.

I for one love Oblivion, I think Skyrim delivers a better game play experience, but nothing beats Oblivion to me at least.

I think people whine about Oblivion because they really, really miss Morrowind.

Oblivion got really really great after applying OOO and some awesome quest mods like Lost Spires to it. I still remember those OOO bosses that actually were a challenge and forced you to play smart regardless of what class you were.

I'm still confused as to why there's so much hate for it now. There was so much praise for it when it came out from the very people that are hating on it so much today.

This, the sharpest blow to Oblivion for me was the fact that it promised so much but fell flat in so many ways. I was on these forums for awhile before the game was released, and so I still remember a lot of the things that were promised to us before the game launched. I also remember just how disappointed people were when they realized that many of the features they were expecting weren't present or were dumbed down. I can now appreciate the game for what it's worth, but knowing what it could have been and the other minor problems throughout the game really brought my opinion of it down quite a few notches.

I loved Oblivion it's one of my favorite games ever. It was graphically impressive at the times and the forests were done great.

But Morrowind was a better allround experience for me because there was much more interesting exploration. And after 75 hours of Skyrim, I have to say I enjoy Skyrim more than Oblivion because there's much more variety and places of real interest. But I don't hate Oblivion, it was just the lesser of the three as it stands now, for me.

Hate, such an over used term on forums these days.

The main problem for most was the transition from Morrowind, it was a change in direction and people just dislike change, for myself I enjoyed Oblivion but only completed the MQ once, I was not inspired to play the MQ again.

The bad scaling of enemies is the problem. Bandits in ebony gear broke the immersion for me. How can cheap ragtag lowly bandits sport ebony gear?

Now in Skyrim, there are enemies that also pack ebony gear, but they are probably highly trained mercenaries.
Bandits in the game rightfully only have leather or fur armor.

It's funny because the only difference is the name of the enemy humanoid, but it makes a lot of difference for me.

I didn't OP - it is my favourite game. However, it is slowly losing this title to Skyrim.

Only time will tell.

I put 20 hours in before quitting, bro. Rule 1 of arguments is not to make assumptions. I'll simply say I rank it with Spore.

I experienced none of the hype for oblivion and thought it was an amazing game. It changed the types of games I play and what type of games I like completely.

I didn't necessarily hate Oblivion. I purchased it around it's release. Now, there is a matter of the standalone add-on packs not working on Windows XP 64-Bit Edition that simply drove me insane(Loved spending money & not getting a refund), but that had little to no reflection on Oblivion. Here's the thing about Oblivion: I found the side-quests more enticing than the main story. The skills/attributes were convoluted(but amusingly convoluted). Those are my two biggest gripes about Oblivion. It wasn't a bad game, it just wasn't as good as it could have been. Skyrim is by far a better game with that said. Here's the good aspects of Oblivion. The Arena, Dark Brotherhood, and Thieves Guild were amazing. They were my main story while playing Oblivion. Furthermore, the Shivering Isles expansion was fantastic. I am the Mad God! YES.

I didn't hate it..but it lacked in some areas.

The setting was generic, the terrain was boring, the world was a big bowl you would easily walk across, so much of the game was cut and paste.

Basically the technology was impressive, but you could tell there were lazy as hell about certain aspects of the game.

Oblivion gates were also ridiculous, only bearable if you had an invis spell or similar to run to the end of them.

I liked certain aspects of the game. For example, i loved the arena, and some cities looked nice.

But i HATED the mainquest and the oblivion gates. and they are everywhere. I prefer the random dragons <3.
