Gates in Oblivion really done my head in, I just think it would of been great without them. I loved Oblivion, im still going to play it but Skyrim, I feel more part of the world, generally it seemed streets in the Imperial City were more busy but I generally felt a bit ignored.

I though SKyrim had more quests, frankly there's more stuff to do in each city than there was in Oblivion.
But agree with the part about the cities, i thought they were lacking in Oblivion and had high hopes about them improving.
Don't get the complaint about the radiant quests tho, i mean, they're about as liniear as the the majority of the quests in this series.
More creatures and enemies would've been great though.

Because not as many people like the cold climate.

I love cold weather but every time I voice this to people in my office, someone voices that I'm weird. Ok maybe not every time but most times.

And yeah, I know I'm weird but it's not because I like cold weather.

Discounting radiant AI because those quests are boring and linear,

Oblivion had more quests, creatures, and towns with a purpose than Skyrim.

The cities were bigger and seemingly more populated and there were more shops.

Why the drop off in quality?

My only gripe with Skyrim, and one that will probably have me bored in a few months.

Skyrim was made like this because the company Bethesda holy grail was and will always be MORROWIND. Once you reach the top theres no where else to go except down!

Some other small studio will make a better game in the future.

I liked FNV more than F3 so I wouldn't mind seeing obsidian take over the fallout series, I think the Elder Scrolls is the type of game that requires years of hard work to perfect, don't get me wrong the game is good but there was a lot of doors left closed that could have been opened.

new vegas was static, nothing respawned, exploration svcked, hardly any enemies had good weapons, there was hardly any combat in the game it was mostly just killing creatures, no way, new vegas had no replay value, the game world was was boring real early on, its not even funny, bethesda games blow away something stale and non living like new vegas, geez, what a joke. obsidian has a lot to learn about open world games, and killing a lot of creatures in a desert where nothing respawns in boring. they were even afraid to put lots of human enemies in the game cause they were concerened the player would get their gear, lol so they armed what few human enemies there were with lead pipes or real weak weapons..hardly anyone play new vegas anymore. the game dropped down to like 20 dollars two months after it came out. can't give that game away....no more obsidian games is my vote.

After spending about 120 hours in Oblivion, I was all done, incl Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles. I DID rush a lot of the quests though, which I regret.

Currently I've got 50 hours played in Skyrim, and I've only done 2 cities somewhat indepth (Whiterun and Markarth), have only just started the Companions quests, haven't done the Civil War quests at all. I don't think I've touched even 20 % of the game yet, and I love it.

To me, Skyrim seems a lot larger than Oblivion.

New engine and quality over quantity.

same engine new name :P

Anyway, I was disappointed skyrim has no major city like imperial city. But I find most of the stuff to do in this game is more involved (more travel) and more interesting. Also a lot more connected to past games ;)

What makes a city is the presence of a cathedral of a university, so these are towns, not cities.

I agree with the OP, though. Skyrim is beautiful beyond words, but so far the towns feel really deserted and somewhat dead compared to those of Oblivion. Call me crazy, but I really think they are.
Obviously there were tons of flaws in Oblivions AI and NPCs, but the towns were large, which is essential. There was a wide selection of where you'd like to go in order to trade, live, or just hang around. In Skyrim I feel one or two towns actually make me want to stay longer than two minutes, where as the rest are just made of narrow back alleys between thick stone walls and snow.

Because Fallout 3. A TES made in 4 full years by this very team could have much more content than a game rushed in 2 years between Fallout 3 and Fallout 4. Hire a new team for Fallout for Pete sake!

I'm the same way. LOVE the cold. The setting alone for Skyrim hooked me in.

To OP, bigger does not always equal better. And you have to acknowledge the setting - Nordic, tough conditions. I think the lore is often - no always - overlooked.

I have to agree you get alot more sense of pupulation in Oblivion towns than in Skyrim, especially if you compare the bigger and smaller towns of both games like Imperial city vs solitude, where solitude does feel large and underpopulated, but not as large and much less populated, by far, than the imperial city.
howeever it also important to notice that in oblivion, you had the towns within their walls and that was about it, the rest of the world was wilderness for the majority of it, in Skyrim, you have towns, but you also have outside of the towns, the within hold villages ,settlements resource areas etc, wich imo was very refreshing and made a big impact on exploration and traveling.

creatures I was expecting less variety, since after all cyrodill was a cultural center with many influences, while Skyrim is just nord stuff, the lore doesnt sustain much veriety in itself.

and quests? I'm sorry but Skyrim has tons more quests... and better quests at that,

Far as that goes I can't even see where the "heavily modified" part comes in. It's pretty much the exact same look and feel we've had since Oblivion with all the same performance issues and limitations, they just slapped better looking meshes and textures in.

Stop. It looks nothing like as-shipped Oblivion. Nothing at all. Go fire up OB, turn of all you mods, and see for yourself

And as for the game engine debate, can anyone tell me- where did this version of the engine exist before it was developed? Where was it used before? People think the word "new" means "created from nothing that existed before" apparently. This year's new Corvette is based on last year's Corvette. Your new house isn't new because no houses ever existed before yours was built. It's not your first time having a girlfriend when you have a new girlfriend.

"new" does not mean "unique" or "solitary", people.

And OP, you are trying to tell me that quantity equals quality. Nice try Mr. Trump.

Skyrim has about 50 more quests than Oblivion. So you aren't looking hard enough.

This and there are 367 locations in Oblivion and 556 in Skyrim (this includes secondary locations not on the map for both games)

Lore, the more creatures problem in oblivion was simply because of the Daedra, which had free access to Nirn.

The Gates are closed, thus only the most powerful of Daedra can enter.

if it was a new engine there would be more quantity with the quality.

No not really. There would only be more bugs.
Content require people to be produce.
Bugs produce themselves :)

In the respect of this kind of gaming, quantity is a subset of quality. Nobody here would be happy with only a single city.

Sad so many of you are bored with this game and it hasn't been out even a month yet.

I still play Oblivion from time to time - doing quests and exploring areas I still haven't expreienced.

With a lot of people, it seems like there is this huge rush to finish a game. I guess with young people finishing a game in 8.2 seconds gives bragging rights.

I like stretching out sandbox games like Skyrim over years.... to each their own I guess.

To coin a phrase, It's not the size of the city, it's what you do with it. Pretty much every aspect of Skyrim is more interesting than what it was in Oblivion. I really liked Oblivion and poured hundreds of hours into it but it had a ton of repetition. Everywhere I go in Skyrim I get a feeling of uniqueness. As far as quests go I've had no shortage of things to do in Skyrim. Not sure what your gripe is there but it seems you are just looking for something to whine about now as there are more than enough quests in Skyrim.

In terms of re-playability I would say Skyrim is top , then close behind is Fallout 3 , then Oblivion, I enjoyed New Vegas but it didn't grab me like the others, can't put my finger on why because I did enjoy playing it but Fallout 3 had me hooked, I think there were more surprises in FO3. Even on my 10th playthough a year after first playing it I was meeting people I'd not met and finding places I hadn't found in FO3. I get the feeling already that Skyrim will be the same, I've racked up about 150 hours so far and on my 3rd character and almost at the start of the game I found quests and places I hadn't found before. I still haven't explored more than 60% of the map.

As for Quests there are loads more, I just wandered into a cave just now and read a book and a quest launched, I met someone wandering the roads like me and he offered me a quest, there's loads more than Oblivion and I think loads more than I've come across myself yet. As I say there's tons more places I haven't discovered yet, in this playthough I am level 35 and haven't even visited all the cities yet!

I will just end this threds now and it seems most people are on my side of this argument. One the cities are way larger than in OB i mean come one you can't be serious. 2..what are you talking about more creatures.. do you mean more daedra.. ya because there portal was open in cyrodill hence all of the daedra creatures.. Skyrim has more creatures just not more daedra which makes sense. And the quests.. dude I am a level 52, have yet to do any guild or main quest and have over 100 hours of gameplay. I also have not done many radiant Ai quests either.. so I am sorry but end thread

You mean less quantity... and yes, maybe you have a point, specially when It comes to guild questlines. Quality, on the other side has greatly improved.
