I've never had a problem with those pistols, so long as you have the skill. It has to be comparable with the other guns in the game and a 10mm is on the low end of that sliding scale. Simply put, a 10mm handgun is not going to have nearly as much power as a revolver of a higher calibur. It gives the highest damage per shot of any gun using 10mm rounds outside of the unique variant carried by Colonel Autumn, and never should a 10mm round come close to the power of a .44 magnum round unless you're comparing the lightest magnum round which has almost the same amount of energy as the top performing 10mm round. Of the common top performing 10mm rounds out there, the .44 magnum rounds have 33% more power or higher. Now considering this is a game the base damages I assume are adjusted to give better DPS stats, which is what I normally use to compare guns in Fallout3. DPS of a 10mm in FO3 is 56, of the scoped .44 magnum revolver it is 78.8. That's roughly 31% more effective.
So really, when compared to real life, if you were using a top performing 10mm round and compared it to an average .44 magnum round, the magnum DPS is about 2% lower than what it should be. Again, this is for Damage Per Second, not base damage. If it were base damage, yes the values are way off. Again though, since it's an RPG and DPS is the bigger factor that is what we need to consider.
If there is one thing I just could never complain about is the balancing job Bethesda did for it's weapons in Fallout3 and also Obsidian did for New Vegas. All things considered when compared to real life variants, they did an excellent job imo.
