Why Did They Pick Stupid Names For The Classes?

Post » Sun Mar 30, 2014 8:29 am

Dragon Knight.............so what 1/4 the player base are Dragonborn? Even if that wasn't their intention you are morphing your body with wings and spiky dragon armor so what the hell else do you assume it to be other than someone with a dragon soul.

Nightblade..............Come On! Seriously? I plan on making a NB caster and I will be using staves, not blades at all. Warlock or Death Mage would have been much better names.

Sorcerer............normally this would be fine but the definition of a sorcerer is someone who uses magic.........................EVERY CLASS USES MAGIC!

Templar...........by far the worst offender. This might not bother anyone who has never taken a European history class but what the [censored] does a religious order from early and medieval Europe have to do with anything on Nirn?

I get that they wanted to name them something other than the generic paladin, knight, rogue mage etc. especially since any class can play a tank or caster. But at least come up with some better names.

Considering the flexibility you have to choose weapons, armor, and skill lines, the "classes" are just a basic guideline.

As for why they used stupid names? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

These are just base names for a starting point. The end result of the character is up to you, the player. If you want to play as an Assassin in Heavy Armor that uses Magicka, so be it.

The class names are all taken from or derived from TES series lore. What they might mean elsewhere is irrelevant.

I must admit that "Templar" bothers me. Sorcerer and Nightblade always were TES classes. Dragon Knight... Well, it doesn't really bothers me like Templar does, but I'm not a huge fan of the name either.

While I'll be using that "class" as a base, if anyone asks me in-game I'm just a healer.

You find books about the dragonknights in the game.

They aren't dragonborn.

Cant say, I always thought "home economics" was a dodgy one. Sounds more like teaching kids how to set up a crack house rather than how to make brownies.

Nightblade was in previous elder scrolls games. Even gave incentive to mix in magic with short blades.

And seriously, Death Mage is better?

I feel that they should have used constellation signs for names. The class names hardly represent how the classes can be played. For example, a lot of Dragon Knights use destruction staff, which is not very knightly, and a lot of Templars serve as archers, which is not very paladin-like. For example: The Steed (DK), The Shadow (NB), The Ritual (SO) and The Lord (TE).

dragon-knight is more of a reference to the akaviri dragonguard and all that jazz. nothing to do with being a dragonborn

nightblade and sorceror are classes from previous TES games.

templar is a travelling knight of light. it shares a name with the RL order but the comparisons stop there.

Wake up on the wrong side of the bed? Personally, I can't see how the class names matter one iota.

"Dragon Knight" could mean anything in the lore. Hell, the Akaviri could be referred to as "Dragon Knights" due to their dragon hunting nature, and fealty to the Dragonborn.

In lore, Templars are typically those like the Vigilant of Stendarr. Those who hunt with Mace and Magic.

To be honest I don't know why they had classes at all. Your choices as you level should define your character, as per Skyrim. If they wanted unique skill sets then have them via a quest or something where you unlock only one path - warrior, thief, caster, healer.

Personally, of all the names, Templar is my favorite.

Sorry

I don't mind dragonknight, sorc and nightblade much, but Templar is a really dumb name for a class in a TES game.

If you're so bothered by templars, what do you think about ebony and glass weapons? :)

Dragon Knight is a fighter who trained in Akavir martial arts, in this Era Dragons and Dragonborn are considered only myth.

Dragon Knight:

A person who either hunts dragons, or uses magic to attempt to emulate dragons (you know, with scales, fire, etc)

Sorcerer:

A wielder of dark magics and summoning (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/sorcery)

Nightblade:

A shadowy figure who prefers death magic and stealth. Blade here is more of a title, or description... much as Paladins are the sword-arm of the church, and Clerics are the Shields. A 'blade' is merely the instrument which is used to strike out against a foe.

Templar:

Since we are not trying to study real life history, and playing a role playing game, use the RP definition of Templar (which is pretty widely used by a LOT of games) - Paladin.

Honestly, to get more wound up over that is pretty bad... a Templar is only a holy warrior of a specific church or religion. On Earth, we have Templars of the Catholic Church... in TES, we have Templars of Stendarr... no real difference...

Can we get glass weapons and armor? That's part of what I consider an essential TES thing :)

The names are no more "stupid" than the class names in any other game.
