Why did you buy Skyrim for a console?

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 5:08 am

I use to be a PC gamer. I even played Morrowind on my old PC. The decision is very easy for me and only comes with age and the ability to look back on technology. When I built my first PC, the operating system I would use was a major concern. Did I want some flavor of Unix, Windows, or Mac OS? To help me decide, I went to the store. The shelves were filled with software for IBM clones. Mac had a section devoted to it. But in those days, there was very little. I left decided on Windows. The same logic I applied to purchasing Skyrim. Do I want it for the PC or for the console? Once again, I went to the store. Almost every title available for the PC is available on the console. Not only that, there seem to be fewer new titles for the PC. So, I bought for the console. PC gaming is on it's way out. PCs are being viewed more and more as productivity tools and less as gaming platforms. Desktops are also being replaced by smaller more portable computing devices (ie: Ipad). Disagree all you want. The writing is on the wall.

You'll praise the advantage of being able to load mods for the PC. Good. You do that. Have fun making them work too. At least DLCs, to some extent, are guaranteed to work. And software designed for consoles are "more stable" due to standardized hardware schemes. There are few variations to account for during development. PC development is a whole different beast. They have to make stuff work on as much popular hardware as possible. That creates plenty of room for problems.

Consoles may not be perfect. They may not be able to use User Generated content. But, they encounter less problems -- generally speaking.

I have people who watch me play on a regular basis so a large TV trumps a computer monitor every time
You can use your TV with your PC.

Why do people not understand this?

The only difference is the shape of the box sitting next to your TV. That, and the superior hardware and uses for said platform.

My pc is hooked up to my TV. Actually im typing looking at a 37'' LCD screen. Some guy in WoW once told me he played on a 50'' Plasma. (DOnt judge me, I quit WoW 9 months ago). I should take a picture sometime. First I need a Camera.

I really dont see why people buy consoles instead of just upgrading their PC they cost about the same and PCs will last just about as long as the console

Hehe... Yeh, right.

I bought my Xbox 5 years ago for $200 bucks and it still plays games that are released today.

Find me a 5 year old PC that you paid $200 for that can play anything current.

So I can trade it in. I prefer more, um... complex... games for pc. Console games, for me, are more for a "I'm not going to do much but run around and use a few buttons" type game.

You're wrong on SO many levels.

The reason you don't see PC titles on the shelves is because PC has moved a generation above consoles not just in hardware, but distribution.

PC has moved on to digital distribution for games, AKA STEAM ( Look it up, over 4.5 million users online at peak times every day ).

Again, you're one of the prime examples of common misconceptions of console gamers.

Please educate yourself and do some research on platforms instead of making decisions based on what you see in the stores. Realize that technology has moved up and the internet is used now.

I bought it for ps3 because #1 we're a 2 gamer household and #2 even though I built my own PC I've been attached to consoles for like 30 years now and I just like the fact that with a console you turn on the game and it just works.. or well heh.. most games just work.

I ended up selling my ps3 version while it was still worth something, because I just deemed it unplayable after patch 1.2. I just couldnt enjoy it with all the freezing/downgraded graphics/framerate hitches - even though I absolutely loved it and it ran great for the first 40 hours. Now I'm waiting for my son to get sick of the PC version so I can have a go at it, might be a couple years lol. Looking forward to trying some of the other goty contenders in the meantime.

I actually knew of the problems when i bought the ps3 version btw. I went into it knowingly though I didnt realize it would be so bad. It's logical though I suppose, I mean PC's right now are about a generation above consoles.. skyrim on consoles is kind of like taking uncharted 3 for the ps3 and getting it to run on the ps2.

If I could I would buy it for PC, but I can barely run Oblivion. I would only buy it on PC for the mods though. Other than that I don't really see a reason to not buy it for console.

You are sadly mistaken. Consoles are cheaper than PCs and provide a standardized platform for development companies to design for. And when then "new" consoles arrive on the market, $599.99 is still cheaper than $999.99.

Note: People do not own TVs anymore. Anyone who has purchased a new HDTV owns a display device or "view screen" for lack of better terms.

No internet access at home for the next few weeks, friggin flatmates, dictated my PS3 would be the one over-heating.

I'll go PC when the CK drops and I get the net back on.

And how much did you pay per game since you bought it? $60 right? PC games were 49.99 or even less until a year or two ago.

Also there's a good chance you bought a new TV in the 5 years you've had your xbox. Add that to the cost. And controllers. And your xbl subscription.

It all adds up.

Long-term, PCs are cheaper if you bother to do research. You do not need a beefy rig to play games. PC is all about choice. Kind of like buying a car.

If you want the fastest and the most luxurious, you go with the supercars ( Rigs like mine ). Otherwise, go toyota/honda ( Rigs that cost $5-600 with parts you choose and build yourself )

I bought it for the console this time because, honestly...the mods. The mods are a blessing and a curse. Most mods require you to restart/make a new character. And as we all know...mods are like being in a candy store. Gotta check every day, multiple times a day.

I tell you, I struggled to beat both games just because I didn't have the will power to NOT download mods.

So this time...I got it for the console. I do not regret my purchase. Will i miss the mods? Newp. Why? Because I'm a smart man! I'll be purchasing the PC version a couple years from now when all the expansions are out...patches are out and the good overhaul mods have been worked on. Until then, I'll experience the game as Bethesda intended it to be experienced,

lol i made a top of the line computer for $600

people really dont seem to understand how cheap computers are these days

if u wanna play on console thats fine but the cost of a good computer is not a good reason not to use a PC, htey are extremely cheap, and actually u can get a good computer for less than what a new consle is worth.

shop around u will be surprised

In a nutshell, I have a Mac.

As for why PS3 and not XBox, well...I had a little history with PS, but mostly, Final Fantasy and BluRay.

Even if I did it on PC, it'd have to be with a controller, anyway.

I tried PC gaming on Steam at a friends. It was fun.
BUT I pay less for my console. I usually wait for the price to go down. I never bought a console at launch.
Also because I use my computer less and less everyday. I really only use it for "finding" Physics answers for homework and this forum.

And remember that modding is not only a Skyrim thing, or a Bethesda games thing for that matter. You can mod almost any game that is out for PC. So choosing the PC version over the console version is almost everytime a win. And as other people pointed out, you can plug your PC into the TV as well, if you wanna play sitting on your couch. And, of course, you can use a console controller for pc gaming too.

The only games I buy for my xbox or PS3 are games that are for the consoles only, like Dark Souls, Uncharted or Red Dead Redemption.

True, but I find the consoles are also starting to depreciate faster. I think Nintendo is already looking into their next console. If you budget correctly with a PC or go "long term investment style" A PC will come out to 500-1000 a year in investment (this currewnt one is about a 600 a year investment) which by any working wage standards could be between a couple weeks and a month and a bits pay. Assuming you spend 50% on Room and Board and another 10-15% on food that leaves almost half a years pay in luxuries. Not bad if you budget correctly.

The minute after you build a beast computer, it's no longer capable of running new games. Why spend a [censored] ton of money to play a handful of games when I can spend $300 and be set for a decade. Oh yeah, and we can buy used games. It only adds to the number of games we can play. I used to be a PC and console guy, but it no longer is worth keeping up a high priced hunk of junk. PC gaming is dying. New TES games are being made with consoles in mind as are most very popular games. PC has very niche games. Would love to play Diablo 3 and Civ V, but there are dozens of games I also would love to play on consoles.

I understand it

I also understand that I can plug in an 360, and throw in the disk and it works

I dont have to connect the computer to the tv, make sure that it works, make sure i got the right drivers, make sure my video card is correctly installed, etc etc etc.

I can just play

I played dragon age origin on both system and I just found that mods are just not worth the hassle of playing games on the PC.

I bought Skyrim on PS3 because:
  • I believe that since Oblivion, The Elder Scrolls (and Fallout) have been made with consoles primarily in mind, and are better console games than they are PC games.
  • I don't have a PC beffy enough to play Skyrim well, nor do I the money to get one.

Are you mental? I don't spend anywhere near that amount on my console in it's lifetime, counting games and accessories as well. Consoles depreciate faster? How do you figure, 360 came out in 2005 and will be until like 2015 until the next generation comes out.

I bought if for console because I didnt want to spend the first few weeks with the game troubleshooting the inevitable software conflicts that always happen with Bethesda games on PC. While I like the TES games themselves, Beths known to make highly flakey titles that love to CTD or just plain stop working for no apparent reason. Its much easier just to fire a disc in the console and play. The whole console vs PC arguement is frankly boring and full of hyperbole on both sides with neither group realising they are both talking clap trap. Consoles are simply stripped down PC's solely dedicated to playing games. It doesnt matter wtf system you play the game on, it never has. The ONLY thing that matters is that you enjoy playing it. It doesnt matter what someone else thinks about how you play it or what you play it on, only your opinion counts.
