Why did you buy Skyrim for a console?

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 4:52 am

The minute after you build a beast computer, it's no longer capable of running new games. Why spend a [censored] ton of money to play a handful of games when I can spend $300 and be set for a decade. Oh yeah, and we can buy used games. It only adds to the number of games we can play. I used to be a PC and console guy, but it no longer is worth keeping up a high priced hunk of junk. PC gaming is dying. New TES games are being made with consoles in mind as are most very popular games. PC has very niche games. Would love to play Diablo 3 and Civ V, but there are dozens of games I also would love to play on consoles.

Thats a total fallacy. You cant play a game on its highest settings. My last computer met the Skyrim requirements anmd could probably run it on the midline settings. Thats a 3 year old computer now. BEast computers age very well still and very few games seem to absolutely flunk. Now Skyrim and the PS3 illustrates how this happens on a console.....

I understand it

I also understand that I can plug in an 360, and throw in the disk and it works

I dont have to connect the computer to the tv, make sure that it works, make sure i got the right drivers, make sure my video card is correctly installed, etc etc etc.

I can just play

I played dragon age origin on both system and I just found that mods are just not worth the hassle of playing games on the PC.
Honestly sounds like you're just too lazy, no offense.

That's the problem with society today. They want everything easy and handed to them.

Those who work hard and/or have patience to do research are rewarded handsomely.

It's your problem if you don't want to bother with it. That's fine. TBH though, with google you can do wonderful things. Just a thought.

Bought it on console because i havent been a PC gamer for years, console of choice, Xbox 360, allows me to sit nice and comy on my sofa, playing games in hd on my nice 50" TV...its simple, no need to worry abour hardware drivers just open the game, put it in, install it to hd (well...you would hope anyway lol) fire it up and play it

Do I regret it, sadly yes....one because I am one of the unlucky ones who hit problems before the 1.2 patch, of which just made the experience worse, and the fact that this is my first Elder Scrolls game and the technical problems have ruined the experience after it started so well. That and the fact I havent been able to play the game for two weeks after buying it full price, and currently in the UK the game is selling new for £22.49...so...yeah, annoying lol

I have always been interested why Skyrim suddenly got so popular on the console platform. Being that Morrowind was a game introduced to me under the guise, (<------ my emphasis)see what you can mod for it! by a friend, I have always vehemently made sure I was buying TES games for a PC. Even now owning a PS3 (I have only played FF13 or 14... cant remember, dont care...) on it, I was never really a console fan. So Whyd you buy Skyrim for a console?

Since Morrowind, TES games have always been more popular on the console. Oblivion and now Skyrim were developed first for console then ported (Morrowind was the last to be PC first). It didn't just get popular on console because of Skyrim, the console versions have always sold way more than the PC versions. Same goes for Fallout 3 and NV. The install base for gamers who play these kinds of games are more prevalent on console than on PC. Having said this, I bought Morrowind on PC and the Xbox and enjoyed both, but the PC version was obviously much better and its design fit that system nicely. Oblivion I bought on both systems, and Oblivion was clearly a port from the 360 and the UI reflected that. I liked Oblivion on the Xbox 360 just fine, it was awesome. But again, the PC version was better for graphics, modding, etc. This time around for the release of Skyrim, I did PC only and have pretty given into that most RPGs of this scope or one having rich stories, will be on PC from now on.

Also, I bought Fallout 3 on the Xbox 360 and PC (PC version was a GOTY edition), but Vegas was PC only.

PC gaming is just a pain in the ass. I'll play games that are PC only from time to time if they're good enough, but console is just preferable for many games. Other than Blizzard products and MMOs, most of my games are on console. It is just a more fun and natural experience. I couldn't honestly imagine trying to play Metal Gear Solid on a PC. As for people saying that you can use a controller for PC games - maybe, but usually they're not optimized for it so you have issues with sensitivity and lack of auto-aim.

Price. A gaming PC cost 5 to 10 times as much as an XBox, and I don't care about high-end graphics. My laptop, while very new, is limited by its built-in low-end graphics card that I can't replace. It chugs on Team Fortress 2.

You can use your TV with your PC.

Why do people not understand this?

The only difference is the shape of the box sitting next to your TV. That, and the superior hardware and uses for said platform.

I'm sure everybody understands you can hook up a PC to a TV. I think your confusion arises from the fact that most people have complex lives where maximizing the gaming experience is pretty low on their list of priorities. When someone says they prefer their console because they like to play on their TV, there is the implied idea that they have chosen not to use their largest screen with their computer.

We don't make these decisions based on your life. We base them on ours. I sometimes buy console games. I sometimes buy PC games (as I did with Skyrim). Given how and when I, my wife, and my kid use the TVs, consoles, and computers, it makes little sense for me to move my PC from my den to my living room. Of course I know how to hook up a TV to a computer. Anyone who has set up a computer and a TV separately knows how to do it together. When I buy a game, I make my choices based on my setup as it is, not on what it would be if my life in general was empty.

Since you said this is your first in the TES series, why not get Oblivion GOTY edition? It would be real cheap right now and the game is fun, though not nearly as deep and rich in story as Skyrim (its story is actually weak). But you can make your own spells and the guild quest are more interesting and MUCH longer. Also, you could more than likely get Morrowind even cheaper than Oblivion in the GOTY edition, and it is backward compatible on the 360.

Your lazy no offense?

Thats obviously offensive and i do take offense to your statement

It has nothing to do with effort, it has everything to do with the definition of a game. To have fun. I have fun with the ease of use the 360 gives me. I do not have fun with the hassle of PC gaming. And if anything, history backs me up on this.

But im not going to make this into a PC elitism topic because I dont want to get the topic closed.

Everyone play what they want, how they want, its all RIGHT for them.

My point exactly. You'd have to at least be on PC number 2 in order to keep up with current games if not 3. This is why PC gaming is dying and it's very unfortunate. I have always been a PC only guy. So many great memories on the PC. It's no longer practical, unless you use your PC to illegally download your entertainment or just somehow get free [censored] to Frankenstein your PC.

It's more fun on console. Mouses and keyboards aren't as much fun.

Except you can play most games on the PC with a joypad, including Skyrim. I find it a joke that console users think joypads are "fun" to use in certain games, like FPS games, aiming with a joypad is a joke. :P

I bought 2 copies. First, one for the PC. Because I've played Elder Scrolls games before, and I KNEW I would be creating and using mods.
But I also bought it for th xbox 360, because before the modding can begin, you have to figure out what the game is like, how it works, what's good and what's bad already. My couch is comfy, this UI practically REQUIRES a game controller to navigate, and when I'm done with it, I can give my old xbox copy to my niece.
PC version and I are going to become old friends together. Someday. When it's modded exactly to my liking. ;)

This. I do the same thing. Learn the game on the 360 with my large hdtv, on the couch, then get the pc version and start with mods.
My Oblivion is on the pc, modded to kingdom come. I love it and still play it.
I will eventually do the same with Skyrim. After I'm bored with the 360, I'll have all th ewonder and glory all over again with PC graphics and mods. :) Sounds like the best of both worlds.

So Whyd you buy Skyrim for a console?

I'm a looooong time pc gamer and have never owned a console. But when it was announced the pc version would have Steam, that tipped my hand.
I stopped getting Total War games after M2 and I'll not get any that require Steam. Same goes for TES series.
Period and non-negotiable.
My reasoning is quite simple: I have a very high end beast rig I built and it remains isolated from the web.
Nothing is put onto its HDD unless I port it over via usb stick.
There is simply no way I'm going to allow Steam to peer within my drives.
Ever.
For any reason.
My rig is not their concern.

Gaming-wise, though, I'm fine with playing TESV on a 360.
I'll still enjoy the game...and the knowledge that my beast rig and all it's modded glory is comfortably isolated.

Not a big issue. Just keeping my rig isolated.

Love the fell of my controller. Couldn't imagine playing so many styles of games with a PC. Sports games, racing games to name the first two off the top of my head. In order to drive a racing game, you have to either use the direction keys or buy a steering wheel.

Because I've heard of less issues with the PC version? Please.

Most of the issues you hear concerning the PC version aside from strictly game-related problems are either:

1. Pirated OS, pirated game, both.

2. System in a state of disrepair. "What's defrag?" Haven't downloaded latest drivers, or video card is 'off brand', too old and out of date, system infected with some kind of virus or spyware, etc

3. Hardware meets minimum but expected to play smoothly with moderate/high settings.

4. Misc background programs and services using system resources which make smooth gameplay impossible. (Skype, Messengers, Antivirus, on and on)

5. Poor configuration (botched overclocking, inadequate cooling, etc)

I could go on, but most capable machines will run this just fine. Nvidia/ATI drivers will continue to update, which should resolve even more issues. With console there is next to nothing to maintain, but if a PC is not attended to properly it can mean poor performance.
