Nostalgia is the main reason. Another big reason is that people love to troll.

I've played morrowind, and compared to Skyrim it's terrible. Hell, I'd even prefer oblivion over that POS.

At the time it came out. It was a very good game and one of the few real open world games. Its easy to look back on a game and say o it wasnt that good of a game. Because the gaming industry has advanced alot. At the time though it was a very good game.

I think alot of people were hoping Skyrim would stick to that style instead of going to the consolized simplified streamlined thing they did.

Morrowind is very alien-feeling but it does a great job of enveloping the player into that world. It's a familiar Sword and Sorcery concept with a huge twist and it's a great hook, and a great achievement to blend all of that so well and make the player feel at home while also providing a huge dose of "this is unfamiliar territory"

It's a rare blend of various game premises that works so well, and the exploration aspect is even more effective since things are a little off-center from what the player expects

I feel this is why so many players 'prefer' Morrowind- there's no time like your first time, and for them, the first time was truly a titanic and brilliant game

Morrowind is an actual RPG.
Oblivion and Skyrim are action adventure games.
Difference is, Skyrim is well done, Oblivion was not.

Nostalgia and getting confused between what Morrowind was like in vanilla, and what it was like after countless mods improved and changed it, imo.

Ok, I'm not gonna go all fan-boy here, cause I'm not. BUT, Morrowind was NOT A PIECE OF $&!^

Yes, nostalgia will color our memories and such but myself and many others put HOURS into Morrowind, because it was a great game. In my eyes, it's a classic like some old NES games and the like.

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean everyone who does is "lolol troll".

It's one of those games that you had to have played when it came out or a little ways after it came out in order to understand and appreciate it. If you played Oblivion or Skyrim first, chances are you aren't going to like it unless you go in with an open mind.

Nonsense. You've never played an 'actual RPG' in that case.

Nostalgia really. While it was sort of a letdown for me after Daggerfall, there was still truly nothing like it at the time, and for most people it was their first rpg so they'll protect the holy name of Morrowind until death. :P

Nostalgia factor is the biggest reason. Wonder how many people preferred Arena or Daggerfall to Morrowind when that came out?

Another reason is the spells, and depth of character creation. Hand placed dungeon artifacts and items that had to be sought out, which was really effing awesome.

For it's time Morrowind was great. For many people it was their first introduction to an open ended RPG as opposed to the highly linear affairs that were abound at that time. It also came with a construction kit allowing people to play around and even change the game to suit themselves (the CK was pretty easy to use too for basic things while having the flexibilty to create more complex things if the user was capable).
It hasn't aged amazingly well but it's still a fun game.

Oh and ..

Morrowind brought me into an alien world, that frankly I hated the first time I tried it. (Blame combat.) It wasn't til my second attempt a couple months later that I saw Morrowind for what it was. A fantastic open world game, admittedly, with issues, but over all a great game in the end.

For me, it was because Morrowind was different. 30 foot tall mushrooms? I've never seen one of those on this planet. Elves and Orcs, Mages and warriors? What's not to like. Oh yeah, the combat system....:teehee:

I think Morrowind has some things up on Skyrim, and also the reverse. There are definitely things in Morrowind I'd like to see in Skyrim, and then there's combat....I can live without Morrowinds combat system.

And yes, there is most definitely some "nostalgic goggles" syndrome in there, but it really was a great game in the end, flaws and all.

Because it was one of the best games of all time. A truly open and wide world. Your friend is most likely impatient and plays call of duty.

In a word: Potential.

Subsequently, Oblivion and Skyrim both can then be summed in two words: Unrealised potential.

For most people on these forums, it was the first time they had played an open world game. It was their first introduction to the Elder Scrolls universe. And it was one of the first times a thriving community was thrown a mod-kit and allowed to go nuts on a game they loved (though I'm not sure if this is entirely accurate :P). In the same way that my favorite games are massively inferior to the games I play now but are still my favorite games, Morrowind is the stand-out title of TES for many fans. The only shame is that a sizable chunk of Morrowind fans feel the need to bash people who genuinely enjoy Oblivion/Skyrim because it wasn't Morrowind.

One of the best things about Morrowind is that I can have six pages of dialogue with any 1 NPC. In Skyrim, the deepest conversation in the game lasts for about 15 seconds. Morrowind gave the player enough information to figure out what was going on, even though the things that were going on were very complex. Skyrim gives the player enough information to figure out what's going on by making what's going on extremely elementary. "You are dragonboarn! Go kill something." That's about as deep as Skyrim gets.

Morrowind, on the other hand, was mired in myth and legend and lore. There was so much to figure out, such huge volumes of information to sort through. Nothing of the sort here.

Start a Morrowind game. Talk to some of the NPCs you have access to right off the bat, and mention every conversation option that you have. Read all that, then compare it to the subtitles for the NPCs in Skyrim. Get back to me on that.

The thing that drew me into Morrowind was all the political douchebaggery underneath the main story. Just like it's predecessor Daggerfall. Instead of teaming up to take out the 'big bad' you see all the scheming between the 3 houses and other factions. I was sad to see that in Oblivion the tension between the Colovians & Nibeneans was almost non-existant. You know if there is any power to be gained someone is going to try to screw someone else over. Skyrim has that same feeling as Morrowind & Daggerfall. Once the bugs get worked out it's going to be as good if not better than Morrowind.

I remember back in the days of the old half life engine goldsource.
My god, so many mods came out, I think that may have been the first time a really big modding community grew.
