Taken from above link:

Given the humanoid shape of Mirelurk Kings (and some of the concept art) it is entirely possible that Mirelurk Kings are more than leaders of Mirelurk broods, but an evolutionary leap all of their own. They are pictured in artwork using clubs and other tools much like Neolithic man, and artists' notes (appearing in the hardcover artbook bundled with the Limited Edition) mention that the Mirelurk Kings may have an evolutionary tie to snapping turtles native to the local rivers.

The Mirelurk kings are the dev's tribute to "The Creature from the Black Lagoon" movies. They don't make any sense otherwise. Just like so many other things in the game..

My theory is that that the strongest, oldest Mirelurk males become the Kings. I believe that the kings are more or less what they look like inside the shell. It is my belief that they are actually the byproduct of genetic testing just before the war, similar to the molerats and Deathclaws, to develop a well armored soldier capable of beach assaults and that they are a cross between some sort of crustacean and a human being.

i'm guessing that the kings evolved from humans and crabs being together when the bombs hit so they mutated together

Not true, Mirelurk Kings are actually mutated snapping turtles, they share a relationship with the mirelurks, which is why they have the name.

Well, they are the kings of things that lurk in the murk, err, mire. So it does make sense. Yes, they seemed to me at first sight like 50s horror flick versions of the good old TMNT, somewhat a mix of those and the Creature from the Black Lagoon. ^_^
So that just leaves one question: Why do they live together with mutated crab-people? Do they share some kind of common underwhater language (Whale? :biglaugh: ), or are they just the masters of the normal Mirelurk since they are much more intelligent, like early man teaching wolf cubs to obey them?

I think it's symbiotic, the kings feed off the eggs, while in turn, they lead the mirelurks and protect them?
