Why does nobody know the Courier?

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 4:29 pm

It was understandable how nobody knew you in 1-3 as you were from an isolated vault/tribe. However, in New Vegas you are a courier working for the Mojave Express...which is located in Primm. How does nobody from Primm recognize you? There has to be at least one person who has seen you before.

Unfortunately Facial recognition doesn't come with the game software. I guess you have to remind them. The trauma of events made them suppress their memories of you. :P

I always did find it odd though that after meeting someone once they always knew me despite my wearing a full face mask and body armor. It would def be cool if they'd only treat you like they knew you if they could actually recognize you. The way factional clothing works in FONV is a good start though.

I only just got to Primm, but I assumed it was his first job as a courier so no one in primm really knew him/her

If I recall, that bullet to your noggin forced the doc to do some facial reconstruction. At least I seem to remember hearing something like that before the release.

Well maybe it's because you changed your FACE in the beginning of the game.

That might have something to do with it B)

Do we even know if the Courier was ever in Primm?

From what I remember, the Courier was on their way to Primm and got delayed in Good Springs

Also, why do you not seem to know the events of the Mojave?

I mean you're a courier in the Mojave and most likely you've heard the most news considering you deliver all over the place. The game seems to indicate that you're from around the area so it's kinda weird that you don't know what's going on already.

For Fallout 3 the weird part was how everyone knew I was from the Vault yet I wasn't wearing vault clothing (ie Moira somehow knew despite the fact I wasn't wearing my vault suit)

Was Primm not one of the many Mojave Express stations around? I'm probably wrong though.

I thought you were from a California branch of the Mojave Express, and this is your first time in Nevada.

I mean, the Mojave Wasteland isn't the whole Mojave desert.

Was the courier from a vault? S/He has a Pip-Boy and no one thinks that S/He is from a vault

Hey, all I'm saying is, 99.9999% of the time, the only way to get a Pip-Boy is to come from a Vault.

Well, you've been around enough to be passing familiar, but not enough to know the whole political situation. There's a certain line with the Lady Killer perk that implies you've been through Montana...

I don't know what motivated Doc Mitchell to give the courier his personal (and probably only) pip-boy

Kind of like asking if I remember the guy that deliver my mail (the answer is no). They do their job and past on to another location.

Doc Mitchell does give you his old pip-boy and his or his wife's old Vault 21 suit. And yes, he did do some facial surgery. The courier was not from a Vault. Also, he/she was on their way to Primm, not from Primm.

Note: The Mojave desert covers much of the American southwest.

It would be nice the player can come from know faction for once, it would also be nice if your character actually speaks like Mass Effect.

Its never stated where the Courier is from, yes you were working for the Mojave express but that could have been your first job in the area. You could have done Courier work for years all over California, you got a job that took you to Primm and from Primm you got the fateful job that left you in a shallow grave. A few things are hinted at such as having been to New Reno, as know one knows you one can assume your not from Mojave but only recently arrived, the rest can simply be explained as head injury excuse for players who are new to the game.

Obsidian intentional made the Courier a blank slate, the story of New Vegas is how these various faction do battle for control. Mr. House, NCR, the legion etc. Your roll as the character is deciding who of any of them win. In this situation a blank slate character works fine, you don't need a history because it doesn't matter. If Mr. House was your ancestor, or if you lived in Nipton before the legion burned it out it be a different game.

For Fallout 3 the weird part was how everyone knew I was from the Vault yet I wasn't wearing vault clothing (ie Moira somehow knew despite the fact I wasn't wearing my vault suit)

Ok other then Moria Who knew you were from the Vault? as I recall most people don't mention your vault heritage, Lucas Simms will only mention you being from a vault if you greet him wearing a vault suit. Moriarty actually recognize you, Three-Dog and Dr, Li all recognize you do to knowing James. But fresh from a vault you probably have certain things that are noticeable,[pipboy aside], the look in your eye, the way you walk and talk, the fact you appear to have bathed recently which is probably uncommon when most water is irradiated. Your whole life was inside that vault, "i've never seen the wasteland before" would probably be written all over your face

What are you talking about? The Courier was on his way to New Vegas, not Primm.

Also, when you says "You are a courier hired by the Mojave express" it shows an image of the building in Primm.

I'd complain about why everyone knows the courier not the opposite. In one of my playthroughs, rushed to the main quest and when i got to vegas i was mysteriously famous and important. At least some dialogs gave me that impression. Anyway the senario is good with a little help from your imagination everything can make sense. I would though like, the courier to be a little more special and that to be slightly shown on the story. For example getting flashbacks from when he was geneticaly engineered as a prototype.

This is how I explained it to myself…

Since the courier was shot in the head, he/she had to go through some serious facial reconstruction and is also suffering from amnesia.

No one who might have known him can recognize him, and he can’t remember who he knew.

I also decided that his level increases as he slowly regains his survival skills.

Best I could come up with.

There's a lot of stuff that doesn't make sense about the setup. I was disappointed that nothing about your past was ever revealed. Then there is the talk about another courier turning down the job when they saw you were next on the list. Also not ever explained.

But then the game as other examples of unexplained stuff as well. I know one theory is that they are using that stuff to setup future DLC. There was also an interview where they revealed they pulled an entire companion out of the game. So it might just be stuff that was planned but never full implemented and never will be.
