Why does RAGE not impress me?

Post » Sat Jul 18, 2009 9:58 am

I dont know.. it looks good and all that.. but its not the "ID- effect" that got me everytime they revealed something new.

With Quake 2 i was like " Oh my **** god! This is insane!!!"

With Quake 3 i was like " They cant be serious? round surfaces? This is freakin awesome!"

With Doom 3 i was like " What the HELL? Look at these Shadows! The grfx are from outer space dude!!"

With RAGE i was like " Hmmm... Looks like a better version of Fallout 3.. with cars....nice!"

You see? I didnt freak out for the first time.
Maybe because Im too spoiled from the Crysis games? Or is it just not so overwhelming this time?

I would agree, but you must admit, this does have something that draws us in, right?

I'm looking forward to this on PC/PS3, simply because it looks amazing. Even if it does look like Fallout and Boarderlands had six with each other to make this, it really does prove to be something of an interesting concept.

But yes, I want to see more of this game, it interests me quite alot.

DooM 4 must unleash all power of idtech 5.

Is for consoles. Same graphics WITH 60FPS is awesome for X360/PS3, I think. Yes, nothing special at graphic effects e t.c., but design is really nice. IMO.

IMO ID just doesn't carry the sway they used to. I mean, John Carmack is still certainly a genius, but it's been too long since Doom 3 which really was pretty mediocre.

RAGE had better blow my socks off, but it's similarities to borderlands and brink in style/setting make me already very tired of the game.

This is FRIST game by id Software after DooM 3. ET:QW and Quake 4 was created by other guys by licence.

Gearbox(Borderlands) and Splash Damage(Brink) have no chance against fathers of genre. IMO.

Very interesting.. the ID tech 5 uses megatextures for the whole game.. thats a good thing and could lead to a whole new level of detail.
BUT: in order to calculate the megatextures for each level you will need a few servers to do the job..otherwise you must wait forever.
So modding will be out of the question for IDtech 5 games.

Another thing that makes me sad is that the game only uses opengl- DX9 features.. its primary platform are the consoles,,,
I think Crysis will easily win over rage this year..

I like rage because it'll run on linux, but yeah, graphics could be better.

I think Carmack is using this engine as a stepping stone to IDtech6, with all the voxels.
A lot of his tech seems to be heading that way.
