Why Does It Seem

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 3:27 am

I've never typed like that and have even tried to get away from "lol" and replace it with "haha".

I feel like some people type like that because outside of the internet, say writing a paper for class, you can't use that "language". Sure, most people type like that because they're lazy or not very educated or think it's faster/cooler, but I believe some do it just because they can. It's not a stupidity thing or a laziness thing. It's a "rebellion" thing...sorta...

It seems that people enjoy making themselves seem uneducated on the internet.

What do you mean on the internet?

I don't mean to offend, nor derail the thread, but who is Acky? Is he like your alter ego? Should I be slowly backing away?
Just no sudden movements, like blinking, or heavy breathing, and you'll be fine

Eh, internet's generally a cesspool where all the muck and scum float to the top with their foul odours. You do find a few bastions of sanity and intellect amongst the filth and fools, but you gotta take a deep breath and wade thru some serious nastiness to get anywhere where you want to be. Anonymity and lessened fear of reprisal and all that. Moderation plays some part, but you can have crooked sheriffs all the same...Still, even if you do get lucky and find your saloon, problem is still finding the right-minded people (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-FIh7dxdD0) folks in the fray.

I think Ackie is with Rosie's troupe. Possibly missed 'em, poor bugger.

I can't stand that. I have actually seen someone who replaces all of their "th" sounds with D, so they say "dis is da best forumz evr." or "I gotz dat game, itz da best game dat I played." Its so Annoying! I can't stand it, do they really think they look cool when they say things like that? Then there are the completely incoherent types like this...

"heyguyswhatsup?IamnewhereandIforsomereasoncantfigureouthowtouseaspacebarandproperpunctuation."

What do you mean on the internet?

I'll help you out here, what he really meant to say was "up on teh interwebz". :P

Oh, I quite like to go slumming round the net, judging people I have never met by only a wall of text. It gives me a feeling of superiority and pomposity matched only by the enormity of my own ego.
I further inflate my id by flaunting my knowledge of the abstruse, and hold in my esteem those members whose loquaciousness is monumental. As in the real world, there must be class groupings and order.
/sarcasm/

Stupidity is a relative term, be careful that you don't put yourself in a situation where it would have been better to hold your text than have everyone think you are an idiot.

Then you both have to learn to be more tolerant of other members, not everyone here is an intellectual with excellent grammar and spelling. Irrespective of how they express themselves and their thoughts on the games, no matter who they are, whether English is their first language or whether you can't be bothered to work out what they are saying, all members are welcome here and deserve respectful and helpful answers, if you don't like it - don't reply to their post. The thing that annoys me more than grammar and text annoys you, is smart grammar cops trying to be clever and making unnecessary and snide remarks - shame I can't insta ban for it, but I can delete posts like it - and do. :stare:

Yeah, there are many places on the internet where I fear to tread, fortunately, like everyone else, I have the choice of not going to them, so don't have to moan about them and their content.

You are my freaking hero.

I also have no idea who Acky is, but I find myself strangely drawn to him. Maybe there's just a high level of education on this forum, but I'm surprised by the number of people who are so fluent in English you'd have no idea it wasn't their first language. I don't mind text speak thrown in here and there, it's when it makes up ~95% of the sentence that I get annoyed.

I think the worst thing is when it's used in real life. In biology the other day, the girl I sit next to said, "I was like WTF! Omd, lawl." Then the person the she was talking to said, "Omfd lawl does he have a gf?"

Then I left before my brain died.

I don't really encounter this problem. Oftentimes the ones that I struggle reading the most aren't "leet" speak, but rather people who don't speak English as their primary language. I usually assume most people with bad grammar are not English speakers, because, newsflash: lots of people don't speak English.

I see it occasionally, yeah, but usually people will either clean it up, are joking/being sarcastic, or do not stay around for long.

Most people are stupid. Well, more so Ignorant due to Apathy or Sloth. I am sure their Stupidity can be cured by a few books. It's just on the Internet, the evidence of this is clear as it is not covered up by the body language of the person. And, warts in the thought process are more prevalent in text than when spoken.

For example, that hot chick/dude you saw last night? Dumb as a board, but you overlook that as you gaze at their physical perfection. And, up until 15 years ago, most of the other dumb people who are ugly that we don't want to look at, we never had to pay attention to because they never left their house. Only their friends and neighbors had to be exposed to them. Now, everyone has a voice and no one has a filter. And, we all have to listen to it.

I imagine it's a combination of initial bad grammar, "everyone else does it," and lack of reprisal. People come online while tired of their homework that marks them down for spelling, see other people typing like that, and gleefully start doing it themselves. A few years later it's a well-established habit. It's more of a slow laziness; not so much that it's "too hard" to type normally at any given moment, but that over a long period it was just the easier route, instead of ever having to learn the actual words.

Note that the above doesn't apply to people for whom English is a second language. In my experience they don't actually type like that, and if they do, it's for the same "that's how everyone on the internet does" reason, unrelated to language difficulties. Learning a language tends to result in bad grammar when you haven't mastered it, but you still have to learn the word at all to type it, and any mistakes are different from intentionally broken English.

While I understand rules against "grammar cops" and others to keep people from being constantly harassed for how they type, in the end, that does only encourage it. No one is going to stop doing something if no one tells them it's wrong. I've been to more loosely-moderated creative writing sites, where people who type like that are predictably flamed severely on sight...they either leave, not because they can't but because they openly refuse to change it, or they learn to type normally.

The http://stackoverflow.com/ where http://forums.xkcd.com/ http://www.ogre3d.org/forums/. I think the requrement is to either find somewhere heavily moderated or somewhere that there is no point going unless you have some intellectual ability.

I notice how BGSF isn't on that list....

You trying to say something? :stare:

Most of the time it's outside of the safe little bubble known as BGSF and in the scary outside where people type with the most atrocious grammar and spelling I've ever witnessed.
