Why Does It Seem

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 12:15 am

I used to type like that when I was a young kid, but after pressure from online peers I learned to type normally. I just figure, if I can learn, I don't know why other people can't. I wouldn't be so critical if I didn't know that they can easily learn to type normally.

There was someone on here who never typed properly. A few lectures and threads on the community discussion, and an effort on his part, and he types properly now. :) Forgot his username.

While I understand rules against "grammar cops" and others to keep people from being constantly harassed for how they type, in the end, that does only encourage it. No one is going to stop doing something if no one tells them it's wrong. I've been to more loosely-moderated creative writing sites, where people who type like that are predictably flamed severely on sight...they either leave, not because they can't but because they openly refuse to change it, or they learn to type normally.

My remarks earlier were aimed at this forum, what happens elsewhere on the net is not my problem (thank goodness). There is very little, if any, leet or AOL speak here, if there is it is only the odd line in jest. If a member joins and uses that type excessively they will get a little note from a mod to tell them to lay off. What it doesn't need is other members jumping in and, often rudely, adding comment about their text as that normally exacerbates the situation and often ends in flaming.

The Neopet forums are much more intelligent than this forum. That's why I've been spending increasingly more time there.
[Sarcasm]

This place is certainly educational - another forum I know to avoid. :D

Well, that's pretty much what I meant. It's not seen much here since those notes apparently do the trick, and because when people join others aren't already doing it, so they're less likely to start. Sites that have no moderation to stop it but also disallow comments against it are what promote people thinking it's normal English.

I still remember Powerslide's hilarious topic on the subject.

Forumer: We don't have to speak in Shakespeare all the time.

Powerslide: DAMMMIT WE ARE NOT SPEAKING EBONICS EITHER!

I text. However, when I text I tend to use proper spelling (when permitted) but I also use acronyms such as lol or lmao. lol is always a way to make sure the other person(s) know that you are being sarcastic.

The only thing more irritable than people with bad spelling are those that complain about it. Some people can't help it. Trust me, I have to tell someone how to spell something multiple times in just my first year of high school.

Many people are stupid regardless of setting. The internet just makes it more apparent.

Geez, some of you sound like a bunch of snobs. :P

I don't make assumptions about someone's relative intelligence or lack thereof, based on some random postings on the internet. I will generally avoid responding to a post I think is stupid - and it might be because it was typed out in text speak, but it also just might be a moronic topic. But I don't necessarily make the assumption that the person posting is "stupid". I also tend to be equally put off by incredibly long, bloviating opinion posts as well - I don't automatically make the assumption that those people are "smart" because they have an extensive vocabulary and spell and punctuate properly.

And frankly, if someone was really struggling to communicate, it's better to try and help them rather than to put them down as "stupid" and mock them for their lack of basic grammar, or lack of common netiquette.

'Tis what the Maiden hath saith.
Does that make me smarter

And more seriously, everyone makes connections between things, in their head.
How is it possible to go about evaluating the fundamental value of those connections.

So all the intelligence we measure is contextual.
Unless you are Stephen Hawking, who is amazing.
Or if you are Tom Cruise, who paid for god status.

Why is it that when on the internet that "ppl be tipn' like dis"? I don't understand it at all. It seems that people enjoy making themselves seem uneducated on the internet. Most of the time it's outside of the safe little bubble known as BGSF and in the scary outside where people type with the most atrocious grammar and spelling I've ever witnessed.

I dont see anything wrong with it. As long as you get the message across, thats the important thing.

My fav. is spelling doods instead of dudes. And saying/typing Canadia instead of Canada.

People are stupid everywhere - the Internet is simply a medium that easily allows them to show it.

I know a forum where you will get banned for using text-speak and 'lol' acronyms.

I dislike lolspeak as much as the next person but LOL and similar acronyms IMO would be VERY overbearing. Borderline overkill. Forming acronyms on the net is just as natural as the evolution of language. I mean who says Personal Computer today and not PC for an example?

Edit: My friend had a theory: "In the beginning. Intelligent people came to the internet and saw the noobs and then intelligent people left. And the noobs flourished. But every so often Intelligence will find a spot to grow and expand... Intelligence... Will... Find a way"

Yeah... That's what he said. Exactly. He ripped of both Genesis and Jeff Goldblum at the same time. I had to be impressed :)

She's a bit slow with computers - the other day, I was talking to her, and then she noticed my computer.
'Ooh, is that an Acorn Archimedes?'
I just couldn't believe it. She lifts the mouse off the ground, etc, when I tell her to move the cursor up.

Old brand of computer.

Let's not get started with my grandfather who got viruses and spyware by clicking on emails that offered links to... cheap Viagra.

I first found out when he came over and asked me to have a look at his computer, because it was running slowly. I suspected that there was something amiss, so I did scans. Came out with a whole list of viruses. I was surprised, because he's normally pretty computer saavy. I asked him, and he told me not to tell anybody, but he had been attracted by the emails offering "cheap" Viagra, etc.
I facepalmed, then did a format. I told him to go and get it from an actual bricks and mortar shop.

I've been traumatized ever since, because I had to go through the experience of an 80 year old man tell me that he had been clicking on disreputable links.

Banana :P

"necessary" and "unnecessary" are often thorns in my sides as I often forget how to spell them

Does the s go before the c? Does it have two n's or just one?

If I'm not thinking about it I can spell them just fine but the moment I start to think about it is the moment I have problems

My English teacher told me a mnemonic for this:-

'I have one collar and two pairs of socks!'
Think she got it from a Nursery Rhyme book.
