Why is it that when on the internet that "ppl be tipn' like dis"? I don't understand it at all. It seems that people enjoy making themselves seem uneducated on the internet. Most of the time it's outside of the safe little bubble known as BGSF and in the scary outside where people type with the most atrocious grammar and spelling I've ever witnessed.

Bad typing aside, I completely agree. And whats with putting 'lol' after everything they type? I wouldn't be surprise if saw someone put something like "my gran died 2day lol".

No it happens a lot here too, though mostly only in the New Vegas forums. I think it's either little kids that are too lazy to learn to type properly, or older kids who are just too dumb to type properly.

@Antibody, I had no clue it happened on these forums, mainly because I don't venture from Community Discussion much.

I've long since given up on any forum that is about a popular game. Even on this site, I'll only go to the mods, fan fic/art and community discussion forums. The other ones hurt my mind. And my eyes. And my faith in humanity.

Dunno why people write like that. Same thing goes for l33t speak. Worst people I experience on the Internet are youtube commenters. Everyone comments saying how nice the video is then a troll comes on posts something offensive and the place becomes a flame war.

I know a forum where you will get banned for using text-speak and 'lol' acronyms. Any forum could implement a rule like but most choose not to.

Happens too much on one of my favourite forums. I feel like punching holes through my laptop.

Yes this is true as well do I need to bring up my first post to show you how bad my grammar was when I first got here. After a lot of people telling me to improve I did . Most people are ether too lazy or dumb to write grammatically correct. Hold on I'll bring my first post if I can.

My brother acts rather dumb on the internet (in L4D matches anyway. If you ever play with a Povuholo who replaces 'you' with 'u' and such, calls everyone when things don't go his way and votes to kick anyone off his team when they're not playing well, IT'S NOT ME! ) but he's able to form coherent sentences just fine in real life.

Then you both have to learn to be more tolerant of other members, not everyone here is an intellectual with excellent grammar and spelling. Irrespective of how they express themselves and their thoughts on the games, no matter who they are, whether English is their first language or whether you can't be bothered to work out what they are saying, all members are welcome here and deserve respectful and helpful answers, if you don't like it - don't reply to their post. The thing that annoys me more than grammar and text annoys you, is smart grammar cops trying to be clever and making unnecessary and snide remarks - shame I can't insta ban for it, but I can delete posts like it - and do. :stare:

Yeah, there are many places on the internet where I fear to tread, fortunately, like everyone else, I have the choice of not going to them, so don't have to moan about them and their content.

I used to type like that when I was a young kid, but after pressure from online peers I learned to type normally. I just figure, if I can learn, I don't know why other people can't. I wouldn't be so critical if I didn't know that they can easily learn to type normally.

There are a lot of stupid people around, is it any surprise that, with how widespread the internet is now, this qwill also be noticable online?

But in regards to using "1337 speak", I suspect that it mostly stems from lazyness, and some people, for some obscure reason, thinking it makes them look "cool" or something along those lines, of course, it really doesn't. I prefer to take the time to type a proper sentence myself, it's much easier to understand and doesn't look quite as stupid, I would only type like that if I'm trying to mock people who do.

I feel that I am fairly understanding of a lack of understanding and bad spelling/grammar. I know I can't spell and have a terrible understanding of the mess that is English grammar. What annoys me is when a lack of effort has been put in to things like a request for help. Bad grammar and bad spelling isn't a problem as long as it gets the meaning accross.

It's because people are just dumb, and not only on the internet, I see most teenagers today speaking in "text language". It has to be THE most annoying thing out there. Almost every time I'm out on the street, and some teenagers walk by, (they're mostly young teen girls, but the guys do it too) they say, "OMG that was so WTF when he said that!"

And half the time I see my niece text, she talks like I did above... She's not too bright when it comes to writing or doing thing in general anyway, so yeah. :shakehead:

I think the problem stems from the very nature of the medium -written text. It's all we have, all we can use to formulate coherent communication between each other. I'll never rag on someone's manner of typing, it's just that because it's all I have to go on when reading a post, and then discerning whether it's meant seriously, blatently, as a joke, or sarcasticlly <- hard one to spot in the best of times. So when the post is in a language that for lack of better discription, looks like [censored] hieroglyphics, or the rantings of an insane person fresh off his meds, then the discerning portion on my part becomes increasingly difficult.

I'm sorry, but when you've got an internet full of reference and inbuilt spell-checkers and also hundreds of people typing in the way that's expected as an example then there's no excuse besides laziness. I'm not saying have perfect grammar and spelling or go away, but at least make an effort. I mean, I may not be fluent in french, but I can at least spell the damn words right. And if I don't know what one means, it takes two seconds on google to find out.

It's easy to tell when someone makes an honest mistake and someone is just being lazy. And it's also blatantly obvious when someone is ESL, and then you make allowances for that. It's just basic politeness to make your best effort to type in a coherent manner on the internet, and isn't being polite and considerate of other members here pretty much expected of us?

So true. Even the nicest, most kid friendly videos will have the Osbournes yelling at each other below. It's become a trademark of YouTube at this point. People expect it.

It is annoying, but what can you do :shrug: I usually just skip posts like that, and especially ones that use "lol" in place of "." (i haven't seen any messages like that here, thankfully). And usually don't bother with grammar policing, except once when someone picked someone for using MB instead GB, while himself typing "duel-core" :lmao:

I myself try to write correctly (and may edit up to three times get rid of the typos i missed ) but typos happen. The honest typos don't bother me, but leetspeak and text message like writing do. This is not instant messaging (though some ninjas occasionally get in before me) and there is no character limit to the message, there's no reason to write like that. I doubt it has anything to do with the intelligence level of the poster though, lazyness or just a habit, more like.



Atleast it takes a lot more effort to interpret that message :blink:
