Why does it take so long for Crytek to release patches?

Post » Thu Jun 20, 2013 1:21 pm

This is an honest question. I simply do not understand why Crytek lets their game sit rotting in its own broken appendages for months at a time, while other companies like Valve often respond to broken patches within days, even sometimes HOURS, in order to fix high-priority bugs.

I would like to believe that this is something we can blame EA for, perhaps EA only allows for patches to be released on Origin on a monthly basis? I don't know, that's just my hypothesis. If that is true, then Origin is indeed both threatening and damaging to the games that it hosts.

This is not true. Crytek has a larger workforce than Valve. Crytek has 642 employees as of the latest count sometime in 2013, Valve has about 400.

This is why I think Crytek is not limited by their ability but rather by 3rd party restrictions from either console networks or EA.

I think this is most likely. Valve can release all of their patches for free because they own Steam, and pretty much never update their games on consoles. Crytek however, are constantly desperate to pander to consoles, trying to scraqe as much money as they can from the bottom of the glass...

I meant the people working on the multiplayer side in the UK who make the patches. I think their team is 80 odd

Even more damaging that the community is so small. People have been leaving the game because of the state of the game that Crytek has left us in for so long. 3 weeks might not seems like a whole lot of time in the grand scheme of things, but for a withering community such as Crysis 3's 3 weeks can be the difference between sustaining a community and killing it.

My understanding about PC patching is that there is no fee for releasing a patch like there is with consoles. PC patching to my knowledge only costs what it takes to pay the developers. Patch 1.4 completely broke Crysis for me and it's a shame they let it sit for so long. It also seems like Crytek has been patching once a month, either at the end of the month or at the beginning. The patching process is they patch on PC then they have to make sure it is sound for the PC version first before dropping 40 grand to patch a console with a patch that does more bad then good. I think Origin has no charge for patches at least for EA games.
