Not many modders are going to come waltzing along with the skills of Windom Earl or Skyranger-1 or Elys or Ian Patt.

They are not falling out of the sky. If they were then I'm certain one would take this up.

The main issue I've seen with it is that it can mask finding the real cause of the crash. So while it might protect you in one instance it also reduces the tenacity you may have to resolve as many crashes as possible and then the same root cause may cause a crash in other areas.

A, that's why is not being developed :( . I hope that someone skillful will eventually want to develop it further since for the casual player that doesn't know how to or want to search for the causes of random CTD's is veeery useful.

No one's stopping you from picking up the task :). Goes for a lot of other tasks as well, mind you. My personal favorite is the 2xCyrodiil project that never took off. Could you do that once you're done with WECPS.....? ;)

Honestly though, that plugin isn't something I'd rely on in a serious game. Masking crashes is a bad idea. It leads to the very real possibility of data corruption and that's not something you want leaking into your saves. When programs crash they generally have a very good reason for it and you shouldn't be doing code dances to get around it.

:lmao: I would if I would have the time, skill, and patience but I don't have either so I prefer to leave these tasks to people that enjoy doing them as much as I enjoy using them.

Same here. Been using it since it was released, and I've never had any corrupt saves. And my Oblivion crashes have been drastically reduced.

None of that is any guarantee it won't happen one day. Much like ignoring potholes you hit in the road won't necessarily bring your road trip to a halt either, but doing so long enough can eventually lead to the car ceasing to function. Even Windam himself said it shouldn't be relied upon in the way people are using it now. It was meant more as a means of getting past a persistent blockage to the game, not as a tourniquet to be permanently left in place.

I'm just saying that WEOCPS has done good for me. I have two active saves 154 and 185 hours of gameplay.

Before, I used to have some CTD which are gone now. Reasons for that CTDs could be various.

If that were true, in terms of probability (and counting how much I've played the game with weOCPS), my saves should've been completely corrupted and needed to be redone at least 2 or 3 times by now.

I think weOCPS is as reasonably secure to use as, let's say, nuclear energy. Yes, it's dangerous and can provoke a huge disaster, but it's too damn useful and relatively safe to just let it go.

when it is installed and I'm experiencing crashing - it will stop maybe 30%.

It is no miracle cure. I smell placebo reports.

Well. I for one prefer the crashing, as long as I can work out what's causing them.
If not WECSP may be a good fix for overcoming that crash, as Arthmoor mentioned.

IT's not placebo for me.

Simple as that, I had crashes - now I don't.

I'm not an expert so I can't say what caused the crashes. Maybe could be hardware, low memory... who knows. Anyway, I'm happy with it.

Well, I wouldn't be playing Oblivion today if it wasn't for this plug in.

I'd get to many crashes and I'd have to little time to work out the cause.

What Psymon said is more or less true. It can only block what it's been specifically made to block. There's no guarantee that what it's blocking is safe to do that with.

The nuclear energy anology is close, but it's probably more accurate to think of it in terms of repeated radiation exposure. A few X-rays over the course of your lifetime probably won't harm you much. A whole lot of them, and it's cancer city.

A save with 154 and 184 hours on it probably hasn't been around long enough for the build up to be an issue.

Also keep in mind I'm seeing this from the perspective of one who has done some C/C++ development and the very thought of blocking a program crash generally makes developers cringe without some very good reasons for avoiding it.

If 184 hours is "not long enough", then what exactly is long enough? Twice of that? It seems to me 184 hours is already a vast amount of time.

Sorry but that is like saying that CD-R's/DVD-R's aren't a safe way to storage data just because they collapse after 10 years. At least it seems that to me.

Much better to at least try that first, then - *if* you have any crashes - try to figure out issues one by one, properly.

I use hundreds of mods, and a number of OBSE plugins (etc.) and don't get crashes. Hours and hours of play already (again). No need for WeOCPS.

Following instructions and guidelines, keeping up with updates and patches, learning to use various mod tools, and just plain using common sense and logic, together, should see you through.

That's my experience, anyway. And yes, I did try WeOCPS, quite some time ago. Not looking likely I'll ever go back to it.

Yes, I also have about 200 mods installed, and I can play for hours with no CTD's, and I didn't use Windom Earl Crash Prevention System until now.

I also used it in the past, but in my recent install decided that its better not to use it anymore because I saw it wasn't maintained anymore.

This whole debate I started made me think it was a good idea to start to use it again and then not to use it at all as you can see in the previous posts.

No one's stopping you from picking up the task :). Goes for a lot of other tasks as well, mind you. My personal favorite is the 2xCyrodiil project that never took off. Could you do that once you're done with WECPS.....? ;)


Oh, I so wanted to start working with 2xCyrodiil to make it usable, but I decided it was simply too vast a project to get involved with.

If 184 hours is "not long enough", then what exactly is long enough? Twice of that? It seems to me 184 hours is already a vast amount of time.

Sorry but that is like saying that CD-R's/DVD-R's aren't a safe way to storage data just because they collapse after 10 years. At least it seems that to me.


10 years for DVD-R discs? Pah. Try 1-3 years if I'm lucky (and with high quality discs). They're not a safe way to store data, so most data I backup onto DVD I also store on an external hard drive (which also may not be a safe way to store data as hard drives like to fail - that's why most data I backup onto external hard drive I also store on DVDs).

I wish I'd allowed myself time to have that many hours in an Oblivion game AS WELL as spending the time I do modding. But I chose to keep going to work each day instead :(
