Why doesn't Bethesda push the series to Hollywood for a movi

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 1:12 am

The Hunger Games was a top grossing film. AMC's Walking Dead is the highest grossing cable TV show of all time. So why doesn't Bethesda sell the movie rights to make some fast cash. Cash could be used in developing Falout 4, 5, and 6.

A single movie wouldn't do Fallout justice, I would definitely prefer a miniseries, probably six episodes, like the Walking Dead. They could easily use the first Fallout story. If you are really craving for a Fallout movie, go watch Mad Max.

Does that do justice to the franchise?

Anyway, a movie is indeed a bad idea. Most narratively rich stories require more than an hour and a half to two hours to really get indpeth, not to mention movies made out of games usually end up being [censored] anyway.

It would have to be a stand alone adventure that largely ignores the the MQ events of games that have already happened. (perhaps a nod or two)
While there are a whole lot of things that are canonical about Fallout, one of the best parts is that you have choice in what happens. The meat of the exprience is up in the air for you to decide. It would be like trying to make a movie out of a choose your own adventure book. Which would be counter-intuitive, no?

If we were to go down the path or even alongside the path of any of the MQ's for existing games, you'd be making all of those things that went along with them into canon.
I could work if they wanted to pick an entirely new area, with the backdrop of the retrofuture 50's cut by the resource wars and Great War possibly working. But it would need to be extremely careful how it introduced any existing factions or races as to not step on existing lore, all while not painting future quest and world building possibilities into a corner At the end of the day, I am just not sure it would be the right thing to do.
.
Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of a movie in the style of Fallout. Post Apoc, dark humor..... Experiments from the past still haunting a society thats trying to grasp for power and rebuild. it wouldnt necessarily need to be (and shouldn't necessarily be) A Fallout movie to accoplish that.

Top this off wit the fact that movies based on games usually svck.
Same with games based on moves.
While its a great setting, filled with all kinds of great possibility i think it would be exremelty difficult to reach across the broad expanse of of player experiences and enrich the series in any meaningful way.
I would much rather a new Fallout game.

Maybe not that one series (which I enjoy) but I rather fans make a series or movie than Hollyweird getting their hands on it. It's bad enough Todd Howard and Michael Bay share the same brain when it comes to making things. Can you picture Fallout 3 the movie? Liberty Prime "Lets roll out!"

We agree it is a bad idea for Fallout to be made into a movie.

Id go with a tv series simmilar in layout to The Walking Dead. After all The Walking Dead has its own game coming out in the next few days so why shouldnt we see a tv series based off the Fallout story.

I totally agree with no big time movie. It would be just way too hard to make a story that is generally hours of gameplay into like 2hrs of movie. But an expanded tv series like previous people have posted would work, especially with the original fallout's story. First episode could clearly describe the world as it is, the problem with the water chip and in the end it could follow you up to you discovering Shady Sands. Next episode could be like you rescuing Tandi or going to vault 15 and so on... It would work great!! But if your really want a well made fallout related tv series watch Fallout: Nuka Break on Youtube. I think they made it perfectly!!!

I have no desire for a movie, but if they made one, they should never, ever base it on one of the games. A stand alone story that fits into canon could actually be pretty cool.

Ok, what if they make the movie…. But people vote on the next thing to happen, majority vote will see a different outcome then say another theatre watching the same thing. Say like we decide if he kills a certain character or not. Give it a 30 second time limit for each decision. idk, how they could implement this but it seems possible with today's technology.

Would be a game changer because watching it would need more than one viewing.

Since it's Hollywood though, I doubt they would try something that crazy. I'm crazy for even thinking this up.

I'd challenge anyone to name a single time when a movie worth watching has been made from a game.... Thats good enough reason not to for me

I say neigh to a movie, in my opinion, Fallout would be better off being a television series. TV series allow for the emersion of the viewer, making them all the worthwhile to me. Look at shows like Breaking Bad, The United States of Tara, maybe throw in 30 Rock or something, I cared more for those characters than I did in any movie I've seen.

And while I like the idea of a story line being stretched over several episodes, I'd rather see episodic, day in the life, one episode stories. If anyone saw the Halo Legends movie, it'd be something like that, buch each story is an entire 30-45 minute episode. Now, if they weren't going to do that, I think they shouldn't base it off of an existing game, because if anyone has read the script for the proposed Fallout movie, it wasn't too great.

In my opinion, Fallout: the Series or whatever they would decide to name it should move to a new location, like an unmentioned, or rarely mentioned places (I'm thinking more New York City than Boston). If it was on the East-Coast it could allow for a government or faction that is secretly backed by the weakened Enclave.

It's not a big budget Hollywood movie but it's as close as (i hope) it will ever be.

Fallout = video game

Not a movie

Also, it's an RPG, with MANY choices, I don't see HOW they could adapt that to a film.

Why don't they?

Becuase 90% of the time, capable directors won't touch a video game based film and it ends up with someone (Uwe Bol?) who puts out some steaming pile of dung.

Seriously, has there actually been a movie based on a game that wasn't just a massive let down?

I think if a movie is made it would probably turn out [censored] as most adaptations are.
As for a TV series, I think a movie suits it better, since it creates a more epic and focused tone and can have a greater budget....it's like if Fallout games were only released as DLC's and not full games.

Yeah, this.
I dont remember ever seeing a good film which was based on a game. Does such a mythical thing exist? Im not sure, do i think Fallout could be it? No.

Besides, Michael Bay would probably make it.

Well, Postal 1 was crap and Postal 2 had crap graphics and hardly enough explosions or humor, the film condensed the humor and explosions into 1.5 hours and had a great plot.
Doom has always just been shoot shoot shoot, so now we got action and a great plot too.
And Resident Evil? Honestly, why wouln'd the films be better? The older games are too slow-paced and puzzle'y, the films ditches that for fast-paced action. I bet that if the older games ran with fast paced action they'd be 1.5 hours too, but nope, they have to be so slow it takes more than 10 hours to finish one of the older games.

Films are better because they toss all the useless crap away and focus on the action and excitement, the directors knew what was needed to captivate the audience and that was to abandon everything that was bad about the games and highlight the good parts only.
Though with REvil they had to completely overhaul it since the games are such a mess.

So I think it could work really well with Fallout.
Cut down the talk talk talk parts, have more power armor, some explosions, perhaps a nuke or two or a dozen, some feral mutants those are always great, and of slow-motion scenes with rotating camera's showing the bullet trajectory.
Yeah, could definitely work.

I love Nuka Break!!!!!!!!! And yea, I love Fallout too much to see it made into a horrible movie that doesn't capture the whole concept/world/factions!

The only thing I love about the Resident Evil movies is Alice, because she kicks ass (ergo I named my first FO 3 character... Alice) hahahaha

For all we know, there could very well be a project already in development.

After all, Bruckheimer is on the Zenimax board of directors. ;-)
