Why don't dragons USE their shouts?

Post » Thu Mar 13, 2014 12:33 pm

Dragons, the original users of the th'uum. Why do they only ever use fire or frost breath?Imagine having all fully unlocked shouts, with practically no recharge time, because that's what it's like for a dragon..According to the greybeards, shouting comes as easily to a dragon as breathing. So why only ever fire or frost!

If they are breathing fire or frost on you, that is a Shout. Dragons are just limited in the number of Shouts they can use. The Dragonborne just has the ability to learn more shouts.

Because they are kind of dumb....

Since your asking this in the Mods section, there is a mod that makes the dragons actually Shout

http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/35286/?

I remember seeing a dragon combat mod that gave the dragons more shouts to use in battle, can't remember the name of it.

If parthanaax can help you meditate on unrelenting force and become ethereal, he should be able to use them.

Alduin uses his meteor storm shout, and Durnehvir uses his soul cairn summons shout as well as Drain Vitality. Overall though yes, it's pretty limited what dragons use considering it's their language.

So the Dragonborn can use more shouts than the Dragons themselves?

This reminds me of an old saying "more Irish than the Irish themselves."

M'aiq does not understand what is so impressive about shouting. M'aiq can shout whenever he wants.

haha ain't that the truth!

It's kinda sad, really. More varied shouts could have added more spice and flair.

Imagine how epic it would be if a dragon could Fus Ro Dah? Or wittle you away with Marked for Death?

Damn Bethesda....

There is something to this though, since dragons are said in legend to more commonly breathe fire, and rumors saying some could breathe frost, "while others are even said to effect time and summon storms". So it seems some do favor certain shouts. (Yes I know they do actually do those things) Why only a few, I don't know. Imagine how godly they'd be if they knew every shout. Maybe it's because it's a combination of specific words, not just knowing the words.

I know Yol Toor Shul, but I forget at times remembering that is Fire Inferno Sun. For more complex shouts, I'm sure it's a pain remembering hundreds or even dozens of word combinations in order, even if it is just three words. Then Miraak showed that not all are just three word combinations. So there's that. Maybe. Eh....

Meh, that still feels like a lame excuse, lol. We do know though that at the very least, dragons knew several or more shouts even in game:

:bunny:

In all seriousness I believe it's due to them being too weak to use them? The shouts must be learned and practiced, so I had thought the dragons weren't "good enough" to use them.

And they actually know and use a few others, just rarely (Only the strong ones). Not to mention the core game idea is that not only does the Dragonborn have the spirit of a dragon, they have the spirit of a powerful dragon. As such, they can learn far more shouts and master them more easily.

They don't because someone on the dev team forgot that Dragons don't breathe fire or frost, they shout it with the Thu'um. So they defaulted in their head to the standard "breathing fire" fare for dragons.

They make a big deal over the Thu'um being natural for the dragons... then they forget to make dragons use it.

Yet another inconsistency that makes the world less believable. Say something in the lore and never reflect it with the gameplay.
