Why dungeons are so boring?

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 3:59 pm

All Skyrim dungeons are very boring and overly long. Tilesets are boring, just like in Oblivion with more clutter added. There's no anything special in dungeons (a piece of paper with some boring story doesn't count). Why designers think that large == interesting?

Last night I was met at the beginning of a dungeon by a ghost. We had a conversation, where I agreed I should look for some items for him.

This is aside from the actual reason I was there - another unrelated sidequest. So I'm in this dungeon doing two separate quests. I have yet to see two dungeons so alike that I have to remark on it.

Personal opinion much?

I find the dungeons this time around to be quite thrilling and actually worth exploring.

The dungeons/mine's are one of the best thing's about Skyrim imo, vastly improved over previous games.

I think the Skyrim dungeons are awesome, and I like how they usually have a little back door so you don't get frustrated back tracking all the way out.

I've yet to find a boring "dungeon". Every single dungeon I've explored in Skyrim has been a totally unique and exciting experience. I never know what to expect when I stumble on one, unlike in Oblivion where, if you've seen one of each type, you've seen them all...

Skyrim is more like Morrowind in it's dungeon design, and IMO greatly surpasses it.

First post is boring. It's too long, too boring and contains the word boring too many times, making it more boring.

It's incredibly flattering that a game like "Skyrim" is drawing people away from games like "COD".

I don't think everything in "COD" is perfect but I can certainly find a bit of fun there.

Hopefully when you're not in the dungeons you're having a good time too.

No TES game has ever had better dungeons than Skyrim... they're awesome!

Oblivion dungeons, especially elven ruins, were grandiose, yet void of any challenge because of the ubiquitous level scaling.

Skryim dungeons are small, linear, but each oneof them has some element of uniqueness in it.

The dungeon designs are just fine, but, they should have them all dark, people should use their own lighting. Cast flame spell on candles to turn them on, use magelight, and use torches, whatever... But having everything magically lit is just a poor design flaw which takes away from the game so much. Atleast that's my opinion. I can't wait for darkness mods that work.

It's not the dungeons. It's the gameplay. Bad combat plus lackluster carbon copy enemies= boring

Most Aileid ruins and Forts also had shortcut to exit, it's not new. Instead of interesting/spectacular bits it's just the same room by room, endless anfilade. THey are everything but awesome, in particular, sleep-inducing.

Non-right edges, nonflat walls and static clutter like debris and roots doesn't make rectangular room piece any less rectangular.

OK I'll take this ride for a dollar. What, in your esteemed opinion, would represent a non-boring dungeon? Let me start you off by saying "non-linear".

You either haven't played "Oblivion" or started MODing too early.

Shame.

You missed out on a fantastic experience.

There is a bit of the same thing appening here in "Skyrim" with many people making eqally incorrect assertions.

In "Oblivion" there were high level creatures that kept high level characters from getting too smug.

Skyrim's dungeons are amazing! Handcrafted, unique dungeons, some with their own quests and backstories, they're one of the best parts of the game.

Come on, even tutorial Windpeak Ruin dungeon is boring, despite being tutorial and as consequence filled with all objects you meet in dungeons: word walls, claw doors, oil paddles, combination locks, spider nests etc.

It is good for a cheap laugh (like I had when saw thatcatwalks of 3rd tier have safety cages), but they are not up to many-hour gameplay.

And actually there are only barrow ruin, dwarven ruin, fort ruin, temperate cave and falmer cave. FIVE tilesets for entire game.

Skyrim's dungeons are amazing! Handcrafted, unique dungeons
All dungeons in every TES game since Daggerfall are handcrafted and unique, it just doesn't make them interesting.

Totally agree. Look at reviews of the game. Many state that this has been fixed since Oblivion. Some caves have water, plants, fungus. Some are more dwelling place, or catacombs. Very different. Have you played much of this game?

I think their very unique and fun to experience.

Flora is generated automatically and is part of tileset. You can call it dwelling, or catacombs, but they are just same blocks stringed together in terribly long chain (or loop). Is there something actually interesting, and if yes than what? The unique named guy in the end does not count, claw doors and other puzzles does not count. Just name any interesting dungeon, except involved in MQ, MG or TG.

Skyrim does have some issues I don't like, but this is definitely not one of them. I'd even argue the opposite: Skyrim's dungeons are waaaay too short, especially considering how much better they are than Oblivion's.

I agree the problem is dungeons are all the same. You go in to find something. So the obvious solution is to make dungeons with no items inside. Put in tons of enemies to fight and when you get to the end. Surprise! Nothing is there. Awesome stuff. Gamers will love spending an hour exploring and finding nothing and no point to it. I estimate this one change will keep the game in the #1 selling spot for 3 additional weeks.
