Why is Dwarven armor so big?

I mean, dwarves are small right? Why does their armor fit a full grown man or woman?

No Dwemer are normal in size,although...dwarven(?!) armor is the most bulky i believe.I don't particularly like it,but lore wise it doesn't seem wrong.

The gaints called them dwarves, the Dwemer were just another race of elves.

Nobody ever said Elder Scrolls dwarves are small. These are not dwarves in the Tolkien or Earth mythology sense. They are an ancient race of elves. Dwemer. I haven't actually seen anything giving a physical description of the Dwemer, but every other mer race is roughly human size, so it's a fair bet.

And Dwarven armor actually isn't armor. It is scavenged parts from their war machines.

There are dwemer ghosts in Morrowind, they are like tall bearded elves.

It began with it being nothing more than Dwemer Centurian armor plating, but I'd you explore Morrowind enough you find them next to the remains of Dwemer indicating that they themselves wore it. So consider it refined patchwork armor.

Not to mention that all armor automatically scales to your character there isn't sizes of armor in the game.

Anyways off topic dwemer are the same size of wood elves which is the shortest race there is that you can play.

no true, dwemer appear to be of the same high, or even maybe a bit taller then the average Man....like I said before, just play Morrowind and look at the ghosts.

I always thought that the Dwemer armour you wore was the armour of the Centurion `robot` golems or constructs that you sometimes come across in the ruins and that we emptied it out and turned it into wearable armour.

It made perfect sense to me since it looked so uncomfortable and unwieldy and it`s exactly the kind of thing a less advanced Civilization would do if it found something like that.

I`ve heard dwarves\dwemer are supposed to be as big as Humans, but in Morrowind they always looked short to me.

Funny. The dwemer ghosts I saw always looked short. And I played Morrowind- A lot.

I wish Bethesda would stop using terms like Dwarves, Orcs and Dark/Wood/High elf. Is it so hard to use your own lore in your own game? Call them Dwemer, Orsimer, Dunmer, Bosmer, and Altmer.

These are not LotR dwarves. At least not exactly, there are similarities. And I also think Bethesda should call them Dwemer.

But in any case it is a know fact of Nirn physics that all armor is elastic and will scale to your character's size. That is why an Altmer can wear armor looted from a Bosmer's corpse and have it fit perfectly. It's a simple matter of physics.

They are the same, but wood/ dark/ high elves is how men calls them. Bosmer, Dunmer, Altmer, etc, are how "mer" calls themselves

Their sculptures suggest they did value beards.

But yeah, we know nothing about their size(or anything else really).

It does bring the question though... It says Dwemer rely of speed, not brawn... Why would they make such bulky armor then?

Doing research on the Dwemer, or Dwarves, on UESP, you find that they are only called Dwarves because they lived primarily around giants...
In fact, the name of their race gives away that they were in fact elves, by the "mer" in "dwemer".

I've this theory about their armor. Most of their automatons are large, at least bigger than your average elf. The dwemer were obsessed with technology, robots, and torture. i find it reasonable that their armor resembles a bulky robot.

Hrm, I could have sworn that I read something about the Dwemer and Dunmer being offshoots of the Altmer.
So one would expect that they're all of similar stature.

I think calling Dwemer Dwarves is a bit like calling Native Americans Indians. Originally incorrect, but common usage has rendered it somewhat acceptable. I prefer Dwemer myself though, but then, I prefer Dunmer over Dark Elves, Altmer over High Elves and Bosmer over Wood elves. And in terms of size and looks, I remember the Dwemer ghosts of Morrowind as very similar to the Dunmer, just with Mesopotamian looking beards, different clothing and thicker eyelids. Here's one: http://images.uesp.net/c/c0/TR_Creature_RadacStungnthumz.jpg also note that the angle coupled with him half-crouching might make him look slightly shorter than he really is. Maybe someone could take a picture of their character standing next to a Dwemer ghost so that we'd have the proper height documented and eleminate some of the confusion.

Here is a link to a foto on a German forum showing a Dwemer ghost and a hated Morrowind figure: http://www.nirn.de/forum/index.php/topic,27720.40.html

So Dwemer were bigger than Bosmer, if the Dwemer ghosts resemble them well, they were like Dunmer. The term "dwarf" was first an (ingame) fault, made by imperial historians, who misnamed the Dwemer. A possible explanation is that "Dwe" means "deep" in the sense of "wise", "deep thinking" in the Mer language and was maybe misinterpreted by the humans as meaning "small", because they translated it as "deep elves" or "low elves".

If you find Dwemer armor you could maybe say it's recycled centurion armor, but if you make it? Why is it so bulky then? In fact you should be able to select the "form" of the armor you make and then make it out of whatever material you want. So you should be able to make say ebony armor out of dwemer metal and have it have the stats of dwemer armor. That's what I think.
