Why is it so easy becoming "The Boss"?

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 4:10 am

Is anyone else starting to get annoyed with how fast and easily you become top dog in the different guilds. I mean come on, run a few quest's and BOOM!
-you are now Arch mage, listener, harbinger, etc, etc.

What happened to working for your title and earning your way. Is this what it takes to sell a game now, instant gratification?!

be happy that you can't become the high king.

i mean.. on the one hand is ulfric starting a war to become the high king and in the other hand is you, who does 5-6 quests and becomes the high king

This is only a problem if you rush through the quest line.

I am working through the Dark Brotherhood and I will do a mission for them, and then work on some other non DB quests for awhile, and then go back once I feel it is time to progress that plot along some more.

Stagger your missions (i.e. don't rush through a guild quest line, but instead do other things along the way) and it will enhance your experience.

yea I agree, for the Dark Brotherhood I can understand it because of the final target you get to assassin (plus the event near the end of questline). They got no better person to pick beside you.

but for the other guilds:
* Thieve Guild: including you, there are 2 other additional members that should be consider guild master. not to mention that they have been in the guild way much longer than you do
* Companion: Ok, you have helped assist the guild master done one thing, but that's all
* Winterhold: oh, come on. I have been doing errand the whole time, and you suddenly promote to the Archmage. Where in the world have an errand boy suddenly get promote into the boss.

I think for the above 3 guilds should have the following requirement before you become guild master:
* Bring Thieve Guild to full glory by doing special quest (also main quest can't be continue until those special quest done)
* Companion: You have shown the other Companion in the circle that you have done something they can't and gain their respect maybe one special quest from each companion. This can be done like brawl, special rescue mission...etc
* Winterhold: Reach Expert in 2 or 3 magic schools.

Well I did do alot of things in between the guild quets but that doesn't change the fact that it's not particularly time consuming or difficult to become the leader of a guild. Something that imo should take alot of time and effort.

At least in Morrowind you weren't told straight off the bat
Spoiler
"Hm, so it seems here that the Emperor had you released because he thinks you're the Nerevarine"
. Even if it was always the case that this was true, there's still a sense of progression which seemed missing from Oblivion and Skyrim.

I figured most of the mages at the guild were overspecialized in their particular field, while my character was more of a generalist (being Adept/expert at every school but Illusion on my battlemage).

The thieves guild I did enjoy as it was the first time in TES series that I actually felt I was working my way up to become a guild leader. In the previous games I ran from city to city doing X amount of quests for X amounts of contacts and when they all were happy with me they gave me the good to go signal to become guild leader. The way it worked in Skyrim I did truly enjoy, finally it was a rather realistic approach on how to become the leader of a guild consisting of criminals rather then that I had done X amount of quests and voila I was the one they liked the most.

The other factions like the mage guild felt way too short and fast. and not to speak that I was a rogue archetype and no mage. But that problem has been in the previous games also, it has been too easy to become leader of all the guilds without having to lift a finger. Dark brotherhood quest line was not bad, but it could also have been a lot better. Companions I haven't finished yet so cannot really say if it is good or bad.

Yeah I know what you mean :-( I was stunned to suddenly find myself Arch-Mage... when I did not have a single magic skill over 25!!! Hell, other than Shouts, I think I have used magic exactly three times in the entire game (a ward during the training in the College, once in Saarthal to bust a wall and once on a Dwemer machine to a solve puzzle and... that's it). I am more of a sword-through-the-chest kind of player :celebration:

Likewise I would have made Aela the new Harbinger rather than taken the job myself.

As for the Assassins (I wiped them out) and Thieves (ditto), I refused to follow the plot lines. I am Thane of every single Hold, I am a personal friend of Ulfric Stormcloak and I am known by the title Stormblade, I am the Dragonborn who defeated Alduin and averted the End of the World, I am stinking rich wealthy beyond the wildest dreams of avarice... so why the hell would I be consorting with low life scumbag thieves in the Ratway or psychopathic assassins-for-hire? I don't think so.

You should at least get the option of refusing the various top jobs so that someone more qualified can take the role and not break immersion so badly.

guys i hate to break it to you but nowadays RPG devs are targeting the wowkids which are many, and those milk drinkers are all adhd retards - they must get fast gratification or loose interest; that's probably why the quest lines are so easy, they give the candy to the baby. At least some of us capable of self discipline can try and actually role play situations, and not rush to endgame and then pollute the forums with verbal filth.

Have you played wow? From my experience gratification comes much more quickly in TES games than it does in WoW.

This. And throw in a few dungeons and questing goes slowly. I found some interesting dungeons (one full of vampires) when you get close to the border of the game (going up to Helgen and then go past it toward the border). And not some vamps my level 19 mage could kill - have to go back later - they handled me easily lol.

The other way I slow things down, I play two characters. An assassin/thief/bow user and a pure mage - which isn't the easiest thing to do. But it's good fun. One is now on the DB quests, the other doing the thiefs.

A lot of questlines are pretty much "Quick you better do this right now or the world will implode!" or sometihng similar...which makes it a bit silly ot stagger them out to do other meaniless task for the guild when the important one is just sitting there.

Bethesda keep forgetting that, people will power through questlines in a few hours if you make them 'super important'.......whereas they sohuld have purposeful gaps and break inbetween where the player is told to ask around for other jobs until 'x' time.

I really hated when I joined the Imperials. They were like ''lets give this guy a real test and he'll be the most badass''
I rather would be a simple soldier ranking up instead of being a hero before I even joined them.

Well after the certain event that takes place near the end of the dark brotherhood quest line you are still the least experianced and by far the most recent addition to the family, so i still find it a bit odd, though i suppose the recognition from completing the final assassination would count for something :P

Actually the Thieves Guild is the only one that felt somewhat complete and you being the guild master makes sense as after the completion of the main guild quest (possible spoiler, not really a big deal though, especially if you think you've completed the thieves guild)
Spoiler
You need to complete multiple small repeatable quests in Solitude, Whiterun and Markarth as well as a specail quest based from each of the three mentioned cities (special quests issued by Delvin, standard repeatable quests issued by Vex and Delvin) Before you officially be named guild leader and have a little gathering and get issued your Thieves Guild Master armour! As doing all those quests brings the guild back to its former glory, which you would have done single handedly, so being named guild leader after that makes some sense.
