Why do enemies always have to be portrayed as evil?

Post » Fri Jul 30, 2010 8:29 pm

I don't think the dragons are being portrayed as evil at all.

Alduin is both the creator and destroyer of the world. Shor and Dagon(/Magnus?) messed up the natural cycle with the forming of Mundus and now he's just going to try to finish what he started ages ago.

Also, I get a creeping feeling the dragons are the Jills; Didn't they say there was some sort of time-slowing effect from killing one?

EDIT: One more thing, from a Merish perspective, Alduin and the dragons are the good guys.

ok...........so if i played as a dunmer or high elf then i would actually be working against myself by defeating Alduin.................man this svcks. *pout*

They must be portrayed as the protagonist's view of evil or the protagonist wouldn't feel motivated to stop them. If two factions were completely indistinguishable in morals, why would you be concerned with or for either one?

Agreed. Besides, it would be an over-simplification to say that Villains in most fiction are simply "FOR THE EVULZ!" and their evil simply because the author says so. Most villains in advlt fiction have at least condemned themselves by evil actions. We gotta remember when talking about morality that actions can be morally weighted as well as intentions. You have to stop Alduin because he is hostile to you and your way of life. Same with Dagon. Their actions condemn them to be your enemy. Same with Dagoth Ur actually. .

The Merish point of view is thinking that the Mortal Realm is nothing but a trap that stole away the divinity you supposedly once had. Those who hold it want to either escape or destroy the mortal realm to return to divinity. You don't have to be a Mer to have a Merish point of view, and not all do either.

so basically the merish point of view is kind of like that cult in CA where they killed themselves to get to some spaceship or like the Jonestown cult  . i always knew there was something a bit off about elves.

Fixed, people with good intentions can have a negative impact on the world.

If I meant that, I would have said it. Please don't "fix" what I say.

with the exception of some games like evil genius (which is an awesome game) and overlord and the upcoming dungeons.......enemies are always portrayed as evil. how do we know that the king of nords isnt a [censored] and a complete tool. in china dragons are considered good luck but we always end up picking on the little fellas all the time. what if alduin is more like the sean connery dragon?

It is easier for some people to slaughter other people if they think they are evil and deserve it. Makes people feel better about themselves that they are destroying evil even if it isn't so

besides, having "evil" creatures gives a clear definition on whether it is ok to kill them or not.

...and thereby removes one interesting decision from the game.

I'm fine with a group of 'mindless, hungry' creatures that just want to eat you, but every enemy shuld not be like that. Bandits, human / mer enemies, dragons etc. should have some explicit motivation that the player can emphasize with, even while slaughtering them.

All enemies are evil, even you to them. You're an enemy to them and evil to them as well.
