At the development time, the shader model used made the beards and like not very convincing, so on Oblivion there is only facial hair color, which you can darken to made it more noticiable. Fallout 3 uses the same engine, but it supports shader model 2.0b, which allow such nice hair options.

I guess there are some mods around dealing with facial hair.

I think Sheogorath banned beards from all of Tamriel at the pain of death.

Oblivion came out two and a half years before Fallout 3. How would that have been possible?

Sheogorath, Prince of Madness, Lord of the Never-There, Sovereign of the Shivering Isles, does, on this day, hence-forth make this decree:

Robert Wisnewski

Citizen of the Shivering Isles, Resident of Bliss, and Honored Madman
has broken the laws and covenants of the Shivering Isles and offended the austere personage of Our Lord, through the following actions:
Attempting the Growth of a Beard, an Action Deemed Unseemly in the Eyes of Our Lord

It is further decreed that the actions of this citizen merit the strictest of punishments to be meted out at the earliest possible hour, in a manner to be chosen according to the Whims and Fancies of Our Lord Sheogorath

If you've ever found that dead body in the SI, you know why there are no beards in Oblivion

Man just hadn't developed enough to grow beards back then.
Oh and I'm sure that was around the time Gelette started making razors.

You're the smartest butt I've ever met.

IDK why there is no facial hair. Hopefully Bethesda will improve on this for TESV.

This is pretty much guaranteed, considering how Fallout 3 offered lots of facial hair options.

I was just using the facial hair options in FO3 as an examples b/c Bethesda made this game as well. Point being, has always bugged me why no facial hair in Oblivion...surely tech. at the time allowed it.

They have facial hair, if you call facial hair a shader that for some reason also turns the entire body purple.

And that allows you to put facial hair on women. :P

I thought there was facial hair. I remember going to the face options and somehow darkening the part of the face where the facial hair would be. It didn't look good though.

This right here is kind of similar to something that made me made about Fallout 3. In Fallout 3 I was wondering why they had no long hair options for male characters, it kind of made me mad. So, I just stuck with the blasted black option.

Yeah it wouldn't be so bad if they didn't rub it in with Sheogorath having one and the facial hair option in character creation. My first time playing I saw it thought it would be hilarious to put a beard on the female Argonian I was creating. That Sheogorath killing the guy for growing a beard was freakin' hilarious. I thought y'all were making it up untill I saw the link.

Yeah, but the hair styles svcked mostly in FO3

This is why I call for better customization in the new ES! lol

If I wanna make a flat chested female Nord, I wanna be able to. If I want to make a busty female Dunmer, I feel I deserve this right! ^_^

I think that's more like shadow, not facial hair.

The thing with the "facial hair" in Oblivon was funny. I colored my Nord's checks and chin only to discover his whole body being blue. So i played him as a nord-dunmer half-breed.

A medieval fantasy world without beards is just...wrong. Someone ought to make a mod that distributed beards randomly among the (male) npcs of Oblivion. Even if it was only the 5 o'clock version. I'm so tired of these bland faces that all look the same.

Who says the world of Elder Scrolls is medieval? Not meaning to come across disrespectfully, but the lore is nothing like the paper-thin pseudo-medieval stuff thrown around in many modern fantasy novels and games. Technology is probably about the level of the European later Rennaisance, except for the Dwarves who have pursued steam-driven engines with a mix of magic.

I'm with you, there. There are several mods that let the player start a character with a beard, but none I can think of that distribute beards among NPCs in Oblivion. One, TNR, exists in Morrowind, but that's a literal remake of every single NPC face in the game, handcrafted, you might say. ;) A pretty big job.

Whoa, someone has been doing some thread resurrection from way back.

Only a few months. Considering that I've seen threads resurrected there are a year or two old, what's the big deal?

The Sheogorath thing isn't an explanation for no beards in cyrodiil, he can't just wander through that portal you know.
