Why F4 failed as RPG game and probably succeeded as product

Post » Sun Nov 29, 2015 6:51 pm

I don't see any character development (or characters to begin with) in Tetris. I don't see any narrative there either. Not even structured decision-making. Hell, it's be hard to justify Tetris as a setting.

But as I've said some days ago, I'm sure that if Bethesda released a tetris game titled "Fallout 5", there would be people arguing like you, that it actually is an RPG. A great one even! This is the evolution, get with times and take off your rose-tinted nostalgic glasses! Bethesda now owns the IP so they decide what is Fallout! :D

By the way, I'm not joining this "F4 is or is not an RPG" as I've never questioned that it is one.

In the future we will end up trying to convince some people that COD is not an RPG - things are THAT derailed.

ROFLMAO indeed

As for sources, one is personal experience.

And 2, if you do a google search

"Tests with Air force pilots have shown, that they could identify the plane on a flashed picture that was flashed only for 1/220th of a second. That is identifying."

i.e. they were able to identify an image of a plane that appeared on a frame at 220 fps

I dunno, I seem to be doing just fine with my RP. Rebuilt my old home, got power to it; joined the Brotherhood and now roleplaying a Vault Dweller out looking for the child of another, fellow Vault Dweller, choosing dialogue options that aren't clearly "I'm looking for my son". Of course, I could also explain that as maybe he *thinks*, through careful research, that the boy may, in fact, be his but he isn't so sure...

It's possible, it requires just a little bit of imagination.

And that's just single frame perception. Then there's the fluidity of the animation.

660TI graphics card. High settings. No lag. Proved false.

Though I do also have 16 gig of ram and an I7 3.4 processor. So it may be possible that a newer processor may be needed for others. But graphics card? Apparently not.

I don't see how any of those points have to do with it not being an RPG... and those discussions don't really go anywhere. It's probably already been mentioned, but if you think the Creation Engine is still as weak as it was in Morrowind then, you must also logically think that Unreal Engine 5 is just as weak as Unreal Engine 1. Ignoring the massive updates and changes to the engine since then is damn silly.

The FPS thing is a shame, but no one's going to look at this game 100 years from now and think it's an unplayable mess because it "only" does 60fps. And that's a new issue tied to how they implemented physics, starting with Skyrim; it has nothing to do with "old" Gamebryo.

I do believe that Oblivion was done using the Unreal 3 engine it ran great on my 3 monitors in 5600x1080 resolution and looked really stunning for the time period it was released. I do not know which engine they switched to with skyrim, but it was a disaster as far playing 5600x1080 over 3 monitors, I had to drop 2 monitors in the end as the overlays were all screwed up.

It was made very clear from the off that Fallout 4 was the same engine as F3 with improvments and a completely different location, so all these gripes about the graphics are unjustified, you knew what you was getting, Bethesda made very clear what F4 was going to be.

The quality of the game play at release was not polished enough in my opion. too many problems seeing they are using an existing engine that has had a 2 games and 6 DLCs.

I may be wrong on this but I tihnk Bethesda would do better if they wrote games for the PC first, then dumbed down for the consoles, it really does seem to me that they programm for a console, then try to get it to work on a pc, the game UI design and controls are just awful.

So what does it matter what other people call a game? the important question you should be asking yourself is am I enjoying this game? If so then dont mind everyone else and there opinions and if you didnt enjoy the game then move on to other games there are a lot of games to play.

The thing that I'm confused about is..... what do the above complaints have anything to do with whether a game is an RPG or not. A game can be an RPG at 30 fps or 60. FPS has nothing to do with "RPG". An RPG can be developed with a large budget or a small one. And an RPG can be marketed strongly, or not.

Seriously, where are the arguments about RPGs, rather than budget, marketing, and coding?

So 90-95% of all the "RPGs" I've played over the past 35 years of computer gaming, weren't RPGs. Because, honestly? Most of the digital RPGs I've played in my life have had utterly linear stories with no choices. Very robust skill/stat/equipment systems, though.

Even more restrictive. 98% of the RPGs ever made aren't RPGs, then. Seriously, the amount of times I've run into equipment maintenance in RPGs could be counted on just my fingers. The apparent "classic" greats like Baldur's Gate don't. Fallout 1 & 2 don't. Dragon Age:Origins didn't. Ultima IV didn't.

(MMOs and ARPGs frequently have durability as a money sink to keep the economy under control & punish raiders, but you certainly didn't consider those games to be RPGs to start with.)

People are missing the point, what Bleak here post is the issue, THAT is the issue, what the F is this [censored] Bethesda.

the hell with the stats and all that unnecessary stuff, the fundamental trait to RPGs is DEPTH in conversation and the illusion of choice, Beth svcks at that SO DAM much, at least the previous fallout games had some of this, but this new voice protag while it looks nice 'oh wow voiced protag w0w so cool' it hinders dialog sooo much.

FL4 only lets you be Lawfully good and at MOST lawfully Neutral and sarcastic good... You cant actually role-play as bad/evil not EVEN lawfully evil. I cant approach quests with multiple choices, you have to help the minutemen.

Nope, was Gamebryo.

Morrowind was Netimmerse, which became Gamebryo for Oblivion, Fallout 3 and New Vegas and then was upgrade to the creation engine for Skyrim and Fallout 4.

I'd imagine that if someone doesn't like the game they would've moved on by now. Ya know, instead of whining on the forums to people who do like it. Regardless of anyone's opinion of the old games, this is the direction that Beth is taking Fallout in, as it's their franchise. Maybe we can hope that they listen to fans and add in stuff we want for the next game but this whole business of arguing over whether it's a good Fallout like the old games is exhausting. Just my two cents, it's not all shooter, it's not all RPG, it's a hybrid. Get on with it man.

"Acting out" is the part of that definition that leads to the most confusion, probably. "Role" may also add to the confusion. Acting in the above definition refers specifically to pretending, in the manner of a stage actor. A role in the above definition is one satisfied by pretending. A goalie does not pretend to be a goalie, but an actor does.

A video gamer playing the goalkeeper in a hockey simulation plans his actions around the objective of blocking shots. A video gamer playing the goalkeeper in an RPG plans his actions around the objective of acting as a goalkeeper would. The former player is not role playing. The latter player, because he pretends, is said to be acting out a role, and so his actions constitute role playing.

Maybe it would be a lot easier for us all if we just redefined RPG to mean "Bioware-like game made by Obsidian" and be done with it. :)

Isn't RPG something from the 80's? I really don't care what genre you call the game, I just wanna play a good game.

What is this obsession with RPG?

Are you some kind of RPG historian?

Is RPG some sacred religion that needs to be propagated?

yeahhh i agree with u, lol, after reading the post this 2 weeks, i think ppl have a overrate definition of what a RPG is. Bc non of what they want apply for the 95% of RPG game out there. And i been playing games for like 28 years of my life.

You obviously missed Dragon Age. Perhaps one of the few games that can truely be called an RPG. Along with Baldur's Gate 2 (and 1, but that's older and therefore more "80s", though you really mean 90s and the first five years of the year 2000).
Also Elder scrolls.
... And Mass Effect.
RPG means "there's characters and plot". Most games Beth have done thus far have done it while allowing the players to decide their characters for themselves, or even "be themselves" in a a fictional world. 4 breaks that trend. It's still RPG, but a very different type of RPG. Much like Fable. What you all fail to take into consideration is that "RPG" can get very varied.
As for the obsession with it, it's because we all want to be in a fictional, immersive world. Be it factual or fictional. Be it with or without pre-defined characters. Isn't that the whole reason you're playing Fallout?
Note: RPG stands for "Role Playing Game". RP would be "Roleplay". I would like to note that there is a difference between the two as when two or more people "roleplay" they can do so with text only and posts. Which can be quite fun sometimes and have it's own varied ways as to how to go about things. Which would be true for everything else. It's not just "what" is done. It's also "how" and in "what way". Not everyone that's into bdsn likes whips and chains.

That's [censored]. You don't open a post with a blatant insult and then say "no offense"; it doesn't work that way.

That would be like me saying "with all due respect and no offense intended, but your mother is a filthy [censored]". You're still insulting someone, even more so using a very subjective opinion and then shrugging it off like they shouldn't be offended because "it's not my intention".

Why should a game get stuck into being a "RPG"? Just be a good game that's what I'm saying

O.o o.O what DA? bc i just finish playing DAI, any character u play your background is pre-made. Same goes for DA2. and DA1 every character have a pre-difine background same as Fallout 4.

Why ppl say things that make 0 senses.

Elder scroll is preatty much the only game where i have play that your PC is someone with 0 background.

Lets not even speak about ME where u are a soldier no meter what.

It exceeded what i expected 155 hours played so far and still happy with the game.

Small amount of frame rate drops but that is what i expect with a 2 year old mid range gfx card nvidia geforce evga 770 classified card.

The rpg feel is sort of gone with the game no really karma based choices other than your companions like or disapprove your choices but that is about it.

The dialogue and speech choices are just a matter of getting used to.
