Why F4 failed as RPG game and probably succeeded as product

Post » Mon Nov 30, 2015 4:39 am

1. Game was developed with nvidia GameNotWorks, so in collaboration with Nvidia. NV wants to sell fast, people must buy new cards

2. It has old engine with its roots in morrowind / oblivion, later skyrim. It generates relatively simple graphics in comparision to frostbite3, cryengine or unreal4. Its not adopted fully for fast computers. engine mechanics is tied to FPS, if it gets way above 60 then engine fails

3. So engine cannot get above 60 fps or it fails. Game gets FPS lock, shadow distance is bumped too high to kill fps even on very fast cards, or algoritms are gimped on purpose. Probably both plus other things too. Quality of graphics is too low for 2015 with these requirements

4. In separate world of brainwashed marketing, if you want to sell new title, you need to make a big noise around it. One of the ways to do it is to bump minimal hardware requirements, max settings have to kill top hardware, so kids will get excited (remember strongly tesselated invisible ocean under game maps?)

5. Now it starts to fit together. Old overloaded or gimped engine (poor graphics, high requirement) so its cheap, no cost of modifications, or licence fees for better one.

6. Exploiting of Fallout hype (1+2+3+NVegas), people want to play it because its Fallout, so they will buy better hardware only to see poorly, tech and gameplay wise product

7. Bethesda is happy, Nvidia is happy because they sell cards, marketing is happy, show goes on. They exploited expectations and dont give a....Product sold. But people who wanted to play good rpg they loved are scamed with "yes" "no" dialogue, flat, paper npcs, and tiresome trash collecting simulator.

Collecting simulator part which has nothing to do with rpg game is totally separated from core gameplay and was slapped there only because most people like to collect things, expand their influence and power so it must be in game

no advertising please.

edit: I posted a site link here with very interesting psychological knowledge about how game production process goes, to make a game more attractive, but sadly it was removed by mod

What do you think?

ps. Yes I dont like F4 at all so my post is strongly biased.

Um Fallout 4 works on both the PlayStation 4 (PS4) and Xbox One which both use AMD hardware.

The PC version of Fallout 4 also works on AMD hardware.

The Nvidia technologies work on AMD hardware. People need to stop hating Nvidia.

Some PC gamers are saying that the PC version of Fallout 4 is incredibly well optimized no Crashes to Desktop (CTD's) from entering and exiting interiors, alt tabbing has no crashes either or staying at a black screen for 5 minutes or forever.

If the game performance is gimped on purpose, why can I get a satisfying playable framerate on my 5 year old AMD Radeon card? Granted, I play in 1280x720 (which I also did in DAI and Witcher 3 because, well, it's an old card, but still).

Agreed. It's not Fallout anymore. Just another game to get old and dusty.

And you're right. Bethesda is happy and they don't give a [censored] about the game or the franchise, they made their money, and so did Nvidia, THAT'S ALL THAT MATTERS TO THEM.

I also have an AMD video card (and not a great one - R9270x) and run everything (excluding godrays) on Ultra. (Godray set to high, 1920*1080 resolution).

Consistent 50 fps+, and not one crash after 40+ hours.

This is by far the best optimized, least glitchy game Bethesda has ever released (I've been playing since Daggerfall).

Whatever faults the game may have, I think Bethesda has finally figured out the technical aspects of their engine. I see no need to run out and buy a new anything.

Yeah there are PC gamers saying they are getting stable playable FPS on AMD hardware with 4 core processors, 1GB video cards, and 8GB's of RAM and others with 8 core AMD processors, 4GB AMD video cards, and 8GB's of RAM.

Even PC gamers who have AMD processors and Nvidia video cards are saying they are getting stable playable FPS.

I always had to wonder when "Role Playing Game" became about a bunch of number systems and overly complicated micromanagment of skills. I know it's a hold over from D&D and old games like Final Fantasy, but to me "Role Playing" is about the story and the characters. The system itself can be anything. I think we need to come up with a new name for the old RPG system.

I can't role play if my armor and weapons can't break and are invincible.

I can't get that feeling of having to manage my armor and weapons to not break and have to constantly repair them. I feel that the maintenance of them is gone. So that's one feature that adds role play for me. I role play to fix my armor and weapons when they are badly damaged so I can go once again into the Wasteland and be careful.

Same goes for unkillable NPC's I can't have emotion if they don't die i can't be sure to see if they die or try to protect them from dying from running into the enemy NPC's and getting killed.

i think it would be simplier to not call RPG something that is not RPG, and dont have proper "multithreaded" story and deep characters with their own interests, than creating new names for old things that are foundations of a genre

Then by that definition, Fallout 4 is an RPG. I've been exploring quite a bit and there's a lot of characters to the game with unique personalities and motivations. Heck, I even felt bad for a Raider group after reading the notes left by one of them.

I wouldn't say it failed as an RPG, the game industry is just changing and adapting to the times like it has many times before. A new generation of gamers are coming into the fold and want different things. You can't expect someone to put out a game and have everyone think that it correctly exemplifies a certain template for previous games people enjoyed. Gamer communities aren't just in the thousands or tens of thousands anymore, it's millions now and that's the nature of the beast we call the gaming industry.

So the atrocious dialog system doesn't bother you? The very limited choices which are also similar to each other? Bethesda ditching skill/special/perk checks and int dialog doesn't bother you?

The loss of skills themselves doesn't bother me. They weren't "Role Playing" elements. They were numbers that gave me stats and aren't inherent to playing a role. I can define my character just fine with the perks instead.

I admit, the dialogue system isn't as good as I could have hoped and I wish there were more options based on your SPECIAL (I do miss grunting my way throug a game). But for me, that's been the only thing I haven't really enjoyed. The character I've interacted with are interesting (really love Nick Valentine as I'm a big fan of old detective radio shows).

Is the game perfect? Hell no. I'm still enoying the heck out of it, though. Then again, I have a broad range of games I enjoy, so changes to certain aspects don't bother me as much as others.

Given the choice, I'd prefer a more robust dialogue system, but that's not why I play these games. If you want complex characters and massive stories, you are in the wrong place.

How are we in the wrong place? The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind has one of the best written quests and dialogues for NPC's.

Lol, you just perfectly exemplified the OP's point. That's what Fallout used to be. That's what Fallout 4 is not. You're right, we're in the wrong place, but we shouldn't be. That's why we're pissed. It's not Fallout anymore.

To clarify - I am talking about skill checks, not skills.

Fallout was notorious for it's great RP elements, branching dialogs covering every kind of rp to make the character your own, quests with consequences and different outcomes and great writing. FO4 is the poorest fallout game by far in all of these.

Then why do you play real cRPG, if you do at all? Titles like Baldurs Gate? Torment - the pinnacle of the genre? No offense really, but you sound like you never played true story driven cRPG which consumes you, like Lord of the Rings books, and two weeks after finishing the game you cant stop thinking about it.

Cant agree more. I have the feeling that if gamepads had two buttons F4 would have "yes" and "no" as dialogue options and the salesman who calls himself game director would still call it rpg. No skills, skill checks, no decisions, no tough choices with consequences, instant power armor, well fusion cores are good choice but theres too many of them... F4 never should have the name of Fallout. If anything, then Wasteland 2 DC is worthy of this title. F4 has daviated so far from series and genre that imho it joined such pieces of plastic like Call of Duty and Assasin Creed. Its just a shooter with some background. Maybe it would be easier to swallow if not the tons of gamebreaking bugs like broken saves (happened to me twice), disappearing quest npcs and broken quests. I lost like 25h because of this, probably because i went exploring instead of spamming quests. Rest of the problems can be seen on tech forum. Its a fail on all 3 platforms. GG Todd Howard. Please go back in time to Oblivion, and rethink, or stop naming your work cRPG and giving it names of series it doesnt deserve.

Another uninformed complainer...

Creation Engine is NOT an old engine. It is a complete rewrite of the original NetImmerse and later Gamebryo engine that Bethesda bought when the original owner, Emergent, went bankrupt. There is NO DIFFERENCE in writing code from scratch and rewriting code entirely from an acquired product EXCEPT that you know the acquired product features are the ones you require for what you want to create. In other words, they kept the various required features they needed that would have been flowcharted for a new engine development anyway and rewrote the code from the ground up.

Fallout 4 is as much of an RPG as any other offered today or in the past two decades or so. That is, any RPG in the past two decades or so is really some type of hybrid rather than solely RPG.

Most RPGs do not and never have had skills of any kind. Get that out of your head once and for all. The original Fallouts used those as an exception and they did not work well at all due to how they were implemented.

If you want a REAL RPG, you'd have to play a visual novel/adventure game where the focus is wholly on the characters and story.

FYI, Fallout NEVER had great writing, not even the original two games. In fact, it's very safe to say that Bethesda's writing is far superior because they do proper research about 1950s era culture, society, Americana, etc that Fallout is based on. The original games did not have that, nor where the characters and environments engaging from a creative writing perspective. That's why people actually experienced in creative script writing such as actors have praised Bethesda's work. Is their work the best in the industry? No, not at all, as many Japanese writers put anything written in the Western world to shame. However, Bethesda's writing is far superior to the original Fallout games due to their environmental, cultural, and social accuracy, and how they present these elements of the game world / fictional story (i.e., enhanced "suspension of disbelief" that is required for any work of fiction to succeed).

Well...That's the real trick.

I like the game, and really that's enough for me. I have fun with it. I can role play just fine with it. But I just...don't see the point in wasting my time defending the game to someone who's obviously made up their minds. It's argument for arguments sake.
