I've played 2 characters now (because I screwed something up the first time, I thought- long story). Both times, at a certain point in the game, my companion has said something along the lines of "Did you see that?" or "Tell me you saw that too!!"
The trouble is, I have NO FREAKING CLUE what it was they saw!! Because I was looking the wrong way, apparently, and by the time I heard them calling my attention to it, it was over!
My only clues are- I guess something flew overhead, because there was a sort of "jet-aircrafty" noise, and I guess it must have crashed, because Cait made a reference to getting there and looting the place, while Piper wanted to see if anyone was hurt. But I never saw a thing, so I don't know what direction to go in to start looking- and no new quest or map reference appeared.
WHAT AM I MISSING?
(Don't tell me what I missed, because- spoilers. Also, I might reload a save point and try to spot it for myself.)
Yes, I think Fallout needs a few scripted cutscenes when things like this happen- if it's that important, I want my attention drawn to it. I don't want to have to try to spot it by looking randomly all over for the source of the noises. However "lifelike" that may be, I think the Rule of Drama should trump it in this case.
Likewise, I have a heck of a time finding enemies sometimes- enemies that my character would, logically, have no problem spotting in real life. I've spent 10 minutes in real life (something like an hour in-game time) searching for an enemy because I saw a red dot with a "down" arrow, then discovered he was actually on the floor below me, which I would have had no way of knowing. Or I heard a voice which I tried to track down, and found out it was a super-mutant OUTSIDE the building- which had to be reached by going through a loading screen. The enemy detection in general gives me fits and blind staggers some days.
We (OK, maybe it's just me) need some kind of highlighting of enemies. I've lost count of how many times I've been aiming at a jumble of trees or rubble and seen a red bar with RAIDER SCUM or SUPER-MUTANT SKIRMISHER, but can't see the enemy themselves. And sometimes this is while they're shooting me! I should at least see muzzle flashes!
I know, there's no targeting indicators in real life. Maybe Destiny spoiled me for this kind of game. But targeting indicators, IMO, are there to make up for the fact that in a video game, we have no peripheral vision, no sense of smell, no way of judging wind, no depth perception, no surround-sound (depending on your setup- but in real life, all sounds surround you). We have to get a few extra clues.
Last issue- the areas for interacting with objects can be too small or too sensitive; either that, or the command is too slow to be recognized. I think everyone has had the experience of Dogmeat running back and forth evading their commands; it happens with all companions, but he's definitely the worst. I don't know how much irradiated water I gulped while trying to interact with things floating on a river or lake surface. I was actually pounding on the command button, trying to grab the caps from a dead roach, but it had floated past by the time the command was recognized- and I took a big swig of water. Mm-mmm, love those rads!! Summary- Please enlarge the area on our companions (especially Dogmeat) which accepts the "command" prompt, as well as enlarging the area on small items as well (which would help solve the issue of grabbing things from floating corpses without accidentally taking a drink).
TL;DR: Please add a few more cutscenes; some form of enemy detection would be nice once combat was joined; please enlarge the command interaction area on Companions and small objects. Thanks for reading.
