Why "no fast travel" won't really work in Fallout 4.

Post » Tue Mar 22, 2016 8:32 am

Personally I've never had a radiant quest that sent me very far from the quest-giver. Also, those quests usually aren't timed, so I just do them at my leisure. My main concern with "no fast travel" will be settlements being attacked. They always seem to happen on the far side of the map, and often when I'm in the middle of clearing a location. I haven't tested how long the game really gives you, but settlement attacks are the one thing I always fast travel for.

I've been playing the pasr few days without fast traveling and every other new hardcoe change I can replicate, and not fast traveling hasn't been nearly as tedious as I worried it would be. It's actually renewed gameplay interest a little because I'm actually putting quality exploration into the map again instead of just warping from quest to quest like some MMO.

As always gameplay mechanic are simply what the player makes of them.

If people can do no fast travel runs with Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Skyrim I'm sure as hell they can do it with Fallout 4.

Well stated. One option Beth may look into is that any settlements connected by a provisioner will allow fast travel between. That is a rule I use for fast traveling (I can also fast travel to large settlements like D.C. where no supply line can be set up).

I've started a new game recently and have self-imposed the no fast travel rule to get used to it - and proceeded to break the rule within a couple of days because it's just so tedious.

I think it would be better if the restriction was amended to allow me to fast travel between my settlements, that way I could access still get to most areas of the map fairly quickly - if I'd put in the effort to unlock a nearby settlement.

While I do support the idea of no fast travel, I'd prefer the Skyrim format of having carriages. In Fallout 4 this could be adapted to settlement supply lines. Build like a caravan post or something like that to enable fast travel between (directly) connected settlements.

The exploration aspect is great fun - until it's not. Eventually you've been there enough times, travelled the same pathways enough, that you're just running through empty wilderness.

I disagree :D

Fallout 4 is actually way more suited for 'non-fasttraveling' because of the density.

The map isn't as streched as it was in Skyrim and you can easily reach any location you want within minutes.

Not being able to fast travel removes the tedious desire to finish quests and makes the game feel like a journey.

After heavily using fast-travel in Skyrim, I tried playing Fallout 4 without it... and I can't imagine ever going back to the fast-travel approach...

the games becomes several times better without it.

But I'd also like to see more carriage/vertibird approaches added to the game.

Just none of this 'magic-beaming-anywhere-you-want' ^^

Aside from the Institute's teleportation I have never used Fast Travel in Fallout 4. I actually enjoy walking/running to each objective as there is almost always some sort of battle to get into or, as in recent days, discovering new places I haven't been to before. Just yesterday I stumbled across a small cubby-hole with a bed, food and other useful stuff in it. Hadn't seen the place before even though it was in relatively plain view.

I never fast travel and personally I love it. Although I hope you all get your toggles, cause it would svck to lose out on diseases just because you want to fast travel.

that being said, there should be an in game reward for whoever plays the game with all toggles on.

And maybe some npcs, like diamond city guards, should make fun of you if you play survival with some difficulty toggles off.

I can do with or without.

Seems like you were bothered by various radiant quests?

I don`t think survival mode is suppose to give you easy time doing anything including radiant quests.

Life is not fair and not convenient. lol

I'm kind of hoping they do. It would be nice if all that work went into something I used more than once. It would also make placement of the device something I'd have to think about more. But I'm one of the people not worried about this aspect of the new survival. I'm more worried about the diseases being a tedious busy work system than something that will be a fun addition.

I'm fine with it. Realistically it's only for the first part of the game. Once you join up with the BOS and the Institute you've got vertibirds and the molecular relay. If you destroy both of these factions you'll get vertibird transport from either the Minutemen or the Railroad. It's a mechanic that you have to earn though, rather than just being a loading screen.

You can't fast travel in real life, and the whole point of survival is to be as realistic as possible, so I don't know why people have issues with this.

Your missing out on a lot of stuff by just fast traveling everywhere, and without fast travel, you will have to actually pull out your map and plan your router so you can get supplies if needed.

Exactly, that's why all the "toggle" bits are a waste of time. One Mode to Rule Them All...

I already have real life. This is a game built with an engine that breaks all the time. Crashed my Xbox twice yesterday alone.

I fast travel a lot. I really can't be bothered covering the same ground over and over and over and....Besides, I am picking up everything that isn't nailed to something or owned. Having no fast travel for me under that circumstance, would lose me interest in the game pretty quickly. I get why some like it without, no sweat, it is just very convinient for me. Luckily I am on PC, so I very much expect mods will pop up to customize my Survival mode as I want it :)

Also... *ready's popcorn* It is going to be fun when some console player is stuck somewhere and can't fast travel and last save is only out (if it isn't corrupted  ). I could see some raging posts on the board :D

Honestly, in closing in on 400 hours in the game, I've only gotten stuck on something (in this manner) once. And I haven't found it again since...

Unless you are a fan of Radiant Quests, not FT-ing is not any more tedious than with other games.

If you play in Power Armour, there's a lot of places you can get stuck. Especially one like me, because I try to jump crazy places looking for hidden easter eggs and whatnot. Just because you don't experience it, doesn't mean others don't :)
