Why hasn't a 'bash lock' been featured in a TES game before?

Post » Tue Dec 06, 2011 12:42 pm

I mean.. it doesn't make sense for a big hulking warrior to be halted by a flimsy door lock that can be bashed open with strength, or bashing down a door. This can be rectified by mods but it doesn't make much sense for it not to be added as a game feature.

Because there's already two ways to open locks. One of which is dedicated exclusively to it. To add a third is trivializing it a bit.

But why not add incentives for a strength based character? Doesn't seem much effort into putting it in the game.

If it was implemented properly so that the noise would alert nearby guards and residents then I wouldn't mind it. Although even as a warrior I do enjoy becoming adept at picking locks and going around at night burgling people's houses.

It would make it too easy to open locks, easier than it might already be.

Strong characters aren't in need of more incentives.

Not really. As someone said before, if the noise alerted their neighbors, nearby patrolling guards and ect.. then I'd be happy with that.

I agree...
Thf picks lock..
Mage unlocks lock wit magic...
Warrior should have a door kicking mini game or sumthing..

Would be real loud!
and u would get a guards attention
and it would only work on cheap wooden doors

but at least all jobs would have their own way...

So this is the make TES more like DnD thread? But yes I agree with the bashing of doors.

Nah, just make some locks only pick-able. That way some locks could be bashed and opened, adding a % to damage the goods inside would work too.

You could bash open doors in Daggerfall.

No? Yes - it's a feature in DND but it's common sense more than anything.

Any type of build can't do everything well, and that's the way it should be.

You made a brute that's crazy good in melee combat, but can't open a hard lock with a pick or alteration magic? Tough noogies.

D&D is hardly the only game to allow you to break down doors, bash open locks etc.
So long as it has a chance of alerting nearby enemies and damaging fragile contents of containers I'm for it.

Really? Then it's strange why they left it out in Morrowind.

Not that strange. There's also technical concerns. It's not a seamless world, especially where interiors are concerned.

Each game in the series has done this - omitted features of previous games but added new ones.

The game will not put something you need behind a lock you can't open without giving you a way to do it.

It will put things you want behind a lock that you can't open. but that is what choices and consequences are all about.

I do agree that lock bashing would be a nice way to get around locks, but from a game play perspective it bothers me. If I choose to not buff up my lock picking skills or the magic that is needed or acquire the scrolls that let me cast the spell without knowing the magic or find or enchant an item that does this for me, then I have made the choice that some locks are not going to open for me.

In other words, there are 4 ways to open locks in the game, two of which are available to any character irregardless of skill, do we need a 5th?

They left out a lot of things from Daggerfall to Morrowind.

Id rather want them to add the ability to open locked doors with a crowbars, its more realistic than just bashing it.

No it wouldn't, nearby guards will be alerted and in a more cautioned state.. they'll come to investigate the noise, you fight or flee.. ect

I don't think it's a bad idea.

You could maybe bash only wooden / straw doors. and non barricated doors.
could be made a perk :)
As said before, the noise should alarm the guards etc.
