Why have I become a Vampire?

Post » Mon Apr 19, 2010 9:12 pm

First time Oblivion player, currently level 5 (Wood Elf/Thief/Archer) and I have turned into a vampire and cannot travel during the day. I haven't done any quests or taken any conversation option mentioning vampirism so why did this happen and can I fix it or should I restart?

I imagine you were attacked by a vampire.

You can fix this if you want but off the top of my head I can't remember where this quest starts.

Or you can stay as a vampire for a while. As long as you feed every 24 hrs (every day), it's not too tedious and there are some benefits. You'll be able to fast travel and deal with pretty much everybody. The only reason I say "pretty much" is that there one instance in the main quest where you may not get an opportunity from Jauffre - although I'm not sure being a 25% vampire prevents that even. A 25% vampire is one that feeds every day so the vampirism doesn't advance any further.

To prevent this from happening again, head south of Bravil and pick some mandrake root. Any time you're hit with a disease, just eat a root to cure yourself.

After you've fought vampires, check your fatigue, and if it's damaged, check your Active Effects tab to see if you've contracted Porphyric Hemophilia (vampirism). If so, you'll have 72 hours to cure yourself before the vampirism will kick in the next time you rest. There's always a notice when a disease is contracted, but it can be easy to miss with a bajillion other notices popping up, especially during combat.

If you're on the PS3, there's some glitch associated with the cure quest (don't remember what) that prevents you from being able to cure yourself.

You'll be able to fast travel...

Just to clarify, you'll be able to move faster. Everyone can fast travel ;)

Vampirism is a disease that you can contract when you battle a Vampire. It's not called Vampirism when you contract it, though I forget what the name is. It's always a good idea to drink a Cure Disease potion after being in an area where you've had a battle with Vampires, just to make sure you don't become one yourself.

PS: Right, it's called Porphyric Hemophilia when you first contract it. You'll get a message when it you first get it but it's easy to miss in the heat of battle. I really wish that Bethesda would have made it easier to know whether you're diseased or not.

No don't go to Raminus. Being a vampire is a gift. Don't squander it.

Not quite... You can't fast travel while you are taking sun damage. You can fast travel from inside some player homes (not Anvil or Battlehorn). I believe you could arrive dead if you fast travel during mid-day as a stage four vampire and travel far enough (from player home somewhere).

Ah ok, I see what you're saying. I missed that you were referring to fast traveling while dealing with sun damage.

The skinny on vampirism:

To contract Porphyric Hemophilia, a stat-lowering disease, you have to be hurt by a vampire. Vampires live in caves, because sunlight hurts them.

You have 72 hours to cure yourself of the disease, either by praying at a temple, or drinking some kind of cure poison potion.

If, after 72 hours, you are not cured, you become a 25% vampire, and you get red eyes, along with a disfigured face.

From now on, the longer you go without feeding, the worse the condition gets.

As the condition worsens, you get damaged by sunlight, and are less liked by people.

As the condition worsens, you gain boosts to Speed, Agility and several other stats, along with several powerful Lesser Powers, based around Fear.

To cure yourself of vampirism, you can undertake the quest starting from the woman at the Temple of the One, Imperial City, who will direct you to Raminus Pole at the Arcane University.

No, that would be a Cure Disease potion you take.

I've always just gone to the nearest chapel after a long day in the trenches, and prayed to the Nine to cure me of any plight!

If you have the Vile Lair official addon, there's an instant-cure inside. But you can never be one again.
For future reference, since you're cured now.
