Post » Mon Nov 28, 2011 11:35 pm

Mainly because they're extinct. And, TES dwarves aren't tiny bearded men anyway.

From what I understand, dwarves (or dwemers as they're called in lore) caused their own extinction. They're gone.

I prefer to play characters who are alive, thank you very much.

...Or at the very least, undead. Preferably not ethereal, though!

I'll admit, after playing as much Dragon Age as I have lately, I'll be in some state of shock after playing Skyrim with no dwarves...

I seem to recall the dwemer ghosts from Tribunal being vaguely dwarf looking (beard etc) but taller

Dwemer removed themselves from Nirn via heart of Lorkhan. Truth be told, the Dwemer had beards, but they weren't short. Only one was left alive (Visiting the outer realms so to speak) but he is afflicted with Corpus, and he may not be alive following the destruction of Morrowind.

Because there is only a single surviving Dwemer.

And its questionable if he still lives.

I for one am glad that the Dwemer are not the typical Tiny, bearded, battleaxe wielding, scottish accented drunkards they are usually portrayed as, especially fter playing Dragon Age and Warhammer for so long.

The dwarves in TES are called dwarves because although they were of normal height, the giants called them obviously thought they were rather small.

Dwemer always looked more Persian or Babylonian or Assyrian in their representations as Specters and their images of themselves in their artwork.
Which I always appreciated, it's always nice to see a game experiment with the typical Tolkienesque mold most races are pressed into.

The Dwarves have been extinct for hundreds if not thousands of years(not sure exactly). They are the dwemer and you learn a ton about them and their downfall/disappearance in Morrowind.

The Dwarves or Dwemer as they are known, simply faded into elder scrolls history. I dont think there was ever a confirmed event as to what killed them off there are many theories though. and there around the size of the bosmer so not exactly dwarf in size.

Use the search function and look up the word "dwemer." The topic of dwemer (or the bastardization "dwarf") has been asked nearly every day for the past 2 weeks, so you shouldn't have trouble finding why they're not playable.

Alternatively, you can search the Lore Forums with the same name.

I always figured the lore revolved around the fact that it would be quite a bit of extra work to program another race that would be rather different from the others.

Dwemer, the ES's Dwarf race equivalent, were actually just bearded Elves that lived in Morrowind, Skyrim, parts of Hammerfell and a few other provinces several thousand years ago. They were the most technologically advanced race, using Arcane Magicks to create living, steam-powered technology and automatons.

They wiped themselves out and literally became the golden skin of a giant robot golem that eventually exploded and was lost in the dragon-break caused at the end of Daggerfall.

Also to point out, they looked like http://www.imperial-library.info/sites/default/files/tdgtd_dwemer_image_01.jpg, http://www.imperial-library.info/sites/default/files/tdgtd_dwemer_statue_04.jpg, and http://www.imperial-library.info/sites/default/files/tdgtd_dwemer_ghost.jpg. In addition, the dwemer, or "dwarves" were roughly the height of an Imperial. The reason they were called "Dwarves" is because the giants that first found them saw them as being tiny in comparison. Also to note, the name "Dwemer" or "Deep Folk" has two meanings, in that they did live largely in underground castles made of a brass-like material, but also because they were deep thinkers.
