If wolves attacked you (yes, they rarely travel solo) a spear would give you a very narrow angle of attack. A sword/hammer weapon with a lateral attack motion would work a lot better.

Damn it, i thought this was going to be a thread about demonic beards.
Bah.

The whole spear thing is a lost cause now anyway - deal with it. The game will most likely be near completed, the finishing moves will have all been done.

I can`t see Beth changing things now, they said "Spear are out". Thats not going to change.

I wouldn't mind the addition of spears to the game. I'm indifferent to it. As for the blocking scenario, I suppose we might have spells that would allow us to block damage from physical attacks. However, there are too many contradictory sources, I'd wait for Bethesda to reveal more information on the combat mechanics or, if we're really lucky, an early gameplay footage.

That reminds me, when does the Elder Scrolls site get updated?

P.S - I remember someone telling me that the "halberds" we saw in the concept art are bardiches.

Well that's not a good example because Claymores are already in the game. Now if they replaced longswords with a hand and a half sword, I would be sad that longswords are gone but then be happy that hand and a half swords are in. Also, it's not fair to compare them because longswords are balanced and spears were overpowered, thus they were removed. People kept complaining about no spears so they gave you other polearms that look basically the same but more ornate and are balanced with swings. If you really still have a problem with no spears in the game your either going to have to live with it and stop spamming the forums with we want spear threads, which adding in these polearms gave you your answer on that front or just quit playing TES so you aren't constantly fraught with grief of no spears.

You come into every single thread about spears and say the exact same thing every time. Wasn't your argument from Morrowind disproved the first three times?

Try reading this: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1167684-official-playstation-magazine-ii/
Well then, how can it not be confirmed?

How does a thread that some forum user created off of a translated magazine article confirm anything???

You are so wrong its not even funny. Yes, spears are older....thats why they svck. When people developed metalurgy, there was no need for sharpened rock spears. Spears were used to keep people at bay, or on horseback. After the sword-making, an adventurer going about on foot with a spear would have serious disadvantages in single combat.

Also, saying that they simply are older makes no sense, since South American natives developed sword type weapons with obsidian and other materials. So, spears are older...for whom? Probably your eurocentric mind.

i was going to post a response to this, but i can see that other people have beaten me to it. word of advice. actually have some knowledge on topic before you post about it. you will look less silly in the future.

There could be perks that allow defensive action with one handed weapons? (Though honestly... skill with the weapon should entail defensive actions.)

I knew we would have some fun once Sleign showed up! :celebration: Now here's some fun little facts about spears!

Fun little fact about spears A: They had the lowest damage of all weapons and except for crossbows they were the weapons with fewest different materials.

Fun lttle fact about spears B: They removed moving backwards incredible speed so therefor they are not overpowered anymore (which they weren't in Morrowind!)

Fun little fact about spears C: Now that you can control your own blocking they are no longer overpowered (which they weren't in Morrowind!)

Fun little fact about spears D: In real life a spear would be a far better weapon than a sword. (How would you kill me if you can't reach me?)

Fun little fact about spears E: For vikings they were the most used weapons ever! (except bows unless I'm mistaken) (I'm around 95% sure they were more used than axes)

Do you want any more fun little fact about spears or are you satisfied?

I was nice enough to underline the answer! And sure some magazines got some info wrong (like the pone with crossbows) but we can't expect the developers to confirm what they're saying is right...

-Halberds.
One of my favourite wargear combos is heavy armour + glaive or halberd. Also, there are a lot more variations possible on the basic halberd weapon than on the spear weapon, because of the way they're wielded, so we effectively get more weapon options for their inclusion (to implement spears properly, Beth would have to do more animation for less weapon variation).

-No.
Hate is a strong word, but I do dislike the lack of blocking with hand weapon + spell, and the apparent reasoning behind it. I can quite happily get past it either by swapping out gear/spells, or using mods -- or both -- so it doesn't worry me much personally.

Honestly, I'M happy if they are in, I'm happy if they aren't. I like to take whatever weapon I find.

But please, stop it with the spear this, spear that threads. This one's only the 500th one, and I'm seriously getting sick of it. They might have one in the next TES. deal with it

I'm pretty sure he is anoyed people say: "Don't complain about spears, we got halberds." and I'm also pretty sure he is quite tired of the hundreds of comments about hiis way of spelling halberd... also finally I'm completely sure he wouldn't mind spears...

His way? You don't just choose how to spell words, you do it right or you do it wrong. I don't see how pointing out the mistake to help him avoid it in the future is a bad thing.

This. People don't point out mistakes to be rude (unless they say something rude on top of it). They point out mistakes so people can fix them and know for the future. This is what is wrong with society atm, people don't want to point out mistakes because they think it is rude, so people that are doing something wrong think it's perfectly fine so no one strives to improve themselves.

Exactly, everybody has to take things personally. Whenever I make a mistake here for example and someone points it out, I'm glad they did. If I post without thinking and say something utterly stupid and someone calls me on that, great. That's how I learn. I don't take it personally because I'm reasonable and don't have eggshell feelings.

edit: Dudes, are you really just criticising a user whose mother tongue isn't English for saying "his way of spelling" instead of "typo"? If the first whole page of comments is about him writing "helbeard" instead of "halberd", hell yes he has a right to be annoyed by that.

Not in the least. You guys come into every single spear thread and say the same thing "Spears aren't OP" except that is why they were removed and I also link a video every time illustrating that fact.

No... nobody said that in this thread except for you. The thread wasn't about Morrowind so far.
And no, that is not why they've been removed. They've been removed because their implementation in Morrowind wasn't that great anyway* (not talking about balance alone, but also about amount of weapons, number of enchanted weapons in that category etc), and apparently because they weren't popular to begin with**.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eo-gePUCTrs

That guy has about 0 stamina, and still manages to hit the guard with each thrust. His spear skill is probably 100 or so. Anyone got a video of a swordsman with comparable skills?

*) Which isn't really an argument. If something's broken, there are two things you can do: fix it, or toss it away (well or leave it like it is).
**) Which is probably a direct result from the first point.

And you both failed to end your sentences with a full stop..! [grammar nazi mode - deactivated]

Yeah; it's a pretty obvious misspelling of halberd. I usually don't point out such mistakes unless a poster specifically mentions a willingness to be corrected, though. And sometimes there are multiple, valid ways to spell a particular word (eg, due to differences between American and British English spellings).

On-topic: I don't see why the "spears are/aren't balanced" debate always becomes so important; surely developer/animation resources are more of a factor, considering that while spears could be made to work in a satisfying and balanced way, it'd be a lot more work for just one weapon type.

all they would have to do is like what they did in mount and blade. weapons have a minimum distance you can use them from. the longer the weapon the farther away from a mob you have to be to use it. a spear use would have the advantage at a distance but as soon as a shortsword or mace user got close in, he would have the advantage.

Thank you for correcting my incredibly stupid mistake, I'm not sure what I was thinking by ending a sentence without a full stop. Also, my native language is not english, that's no excuse for me to write it poorly.

Anyway, here's the deal, spears are a single weapon type. They require unique animations to feel right, they are not wielded like staves and while some halberds can be used as spears, that's not how they are primarily wielded. So think about this, is it really worth the extra work to make completely separate animations for a single weapon type, a weapon that is situational and will be a suboptimal choice in the majority of fights? I'm thinking no.

Now if spears were implemented well, I would welcome them. I probably wouldn't use them, but I'm not stupid enough to throw a fit over something I can simply choose to avoid. However, if implementing them well takes away development time from more important aspects, then I'd rather they be left out. Face it, while you may like spears there are far, far more important things to work on in this game. I know it, you know it and Bethesda knows it. Accept the facts and move on with your life, letting Bethesda know that you want spears is one thing, but this thing has reached a whole new level. There comes a point where your reasonable expression of a wish turns into the whining of an entitled child, if people could just stay on the right side of that metaphorical line then everything would be a lot better, both here and in the world in general.

Enough with the constant spear topics. Bethesda will not come around on this one, not when the game is less than a year away from release.

while some halberds can be used as spears, that's not how they are primarily wielded.

By definition, all halberds can be used to thrust. From all I know, that is the primary use of the halberd. The axe blade and spike were mainly for taking on opponents who were in a bad position and left an opening for such a slow, but powerful attack.

Thus, spear animations could well be used for all types of polearms that have a pointy end. Add a slash animation to it, and you can also simulate the advantages of those weapons. Two main attack animations for a whole lot of weapons.

Again, the sword. All swords look the same to me. More so than polearms, by far. Yet swords get their own animations.

Also, a spear would not be the sub optimal choice in most fights. Spears have since ages been used for hunting (the boar spear for example), so against all sorts of animals, they are excellent. They also have been used very commonly in warfare, making them excellent weapons against humanoid enemies, given you have enough space to operate. They svck in dense forests and inside buildings, but that's it.

Also: Keep the spear threads coming. Don't spam, but keep expressing that the community wants spears. That way we might at least get a DLC pack with spears at some point. How would they know we want them if we wouldn't have kept telling them?
