Why am I heterosixual?

Post » Thu Nov 26, 2015 10:46 pm

Why not be hetro? Since Fallout's time of 2077 is based off our 1950s, it is logical that it would follow the same standards when it comes to romance. There weren't many people coming out of the closet back in the 50s. Homosixuality was something that was best kept behind closed doors. Their time period is not like our open let it be known times.

Perhaps the 50's inspired year 2077 can omit social insensitivity in favor of only lifting the style and aesthetics from the era? I feel like Bethesda would get a lot of flak for openly placing dated societal norms in a world that isn't ACTUALLY set in a 50's apocalypse. Just a 50's inspired one.

+1

Using some creativity in that brain. If you think gay/bisixuals/ect are marginallized now you just only need to look back then to when it was way worse.

In an ideal world everyone would have options to satisfy them, but sometimes budgets are an issue. So heres hoping they can figure something out for the next game.

We do not really know. Maybe they are gay or oblivious. maybe they are bisixual. we do not necessarily know anything at this point.

Disappointing but not surprising. You could be gay/bi in 1, 2, and NV (all made by Obsidian or its precursor). What game could you only be straight? Ahh right, the one Bethesda made.

It could be that they're trying to dodge bad publicity, or they're worried about sales in more restricted regions, but I think its just as likely that hetero was so accepted by the staff there that no one even considered there could be an alternative. (Even now, stats indicate that 97% of people indentify as straight - try and cover people questioning, or embaressing to admit, you're still probably looking at 90%+)

It isn't like there is going to be a setting for sixual preference, though, so it is most likely up to your imagination anyways.

There was not in New Vegas either (not without mods, anyways). There were perks, but I never saw it as declaring the sixual orientation.

One of the perks was literally called Confirmed Bachelor.

I noticed, but I did not see it as a character being gay. Just seemed like a bonus to killing legionaries with some dialogue that I never really used. I believe you can still sleep with women even with that perk. Same for the Black Widow one.

Instead of looking for things to be intentionally offended by, why not expend that effort trying to creative? Perhaps his loneliness Post-War makes him/her explore his/her sixuality and they either discover they're gay/bi? Oh wait, I forgot, this forum just wants things to complain about instead of rational things. :/

Wow. It's great to see the response to this. Hopefully Bethesda sees the debate going on and endeavours to make their game more inclusive before lunch.

Sorry friend, but I'm going to be addressing this misconception since it's come up multiple times. While I did already state that it is understandable that queer visibility is not something common in 1950s views of a possible future, neither is equality. Jim Crow laws weren't overturned until 1965 in the US and homosixuality wasn't decriminalized until 1969 in Canada. There was plenty of racism and sixism in 1950 but we don't see that explored in F3 or the promotional content for F4. The absence of queer characters and considerations for queer players is not a deconstruction of homophobia if the 1950s, but a result of it's continued presence in modern video game development.

Bethesda doesn't have a good history of queer representations. While New Vegas included a homosixual man and woman as prominent characters with stories where their sixuality was incidental to their lives, Bethesda's Fallout 3 only included a lisbian couple represented by two rotting corpses (ghouls) heavily in the background. It's almost worse than none at all.

Great points. Just want to clarify 97% of people identify as something other than homosixual. That means the 97% includes people who identify as bisixual, pansixual, demisixual, queer, questioning and of course unsure.

You play a heterosixual only if you choose to play a heterosixual. If you need help rationalizing how your homosixual character can be in a heterosixual marriage, I suggest reading this article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mixed-orientation_marriage

You had perks that basically meant you were homosixual.....not to mention two of your companions (Veronica and Arcade) out themselves to you if you talk to them enough. Sarah and Red Lucy will sleep with female Couriers if they do their quests.

Cass also implies when she's drunk enough, she isn't too fussed about sleeping with a woman.

Again they do not mean that much. The female one just meant more damage with females and some dialogue. you can choose not to have six with anyone and have those perks. The male one, as I mentioned, I think you can actually sleep with the women despite having it.

The companions have nothing to do with the player's sixual orientation.

If they let you marry anyone in Skyrim I bet you that Bethesda is aware of the gay community playing their games.

Thing is, for story reasons you will be forced to have a family and straight wife/husband, but that doesn't discard the possibility for your character being gay after the apocalypse, or even being closet before.

I'm almost sure that there are certainly some dialogues about your PC sixuality somewhere in the game. Bethesda is not blind of its own community.

It was all about choice. Cercez Le Femme or whatever and Confirmed Bachelor are perks to open up the path to same six relations. Some people want to play as a Bisixual character. If you want your character to be gay, don't flirt with the opposite six. Simple. You're really just being overly pedantic.

Thanks, I actually joined today cause I didn't realize there was an offical form.

A lot of people here are making comments about pushing "the gay agenda" or "why do gays need to make everything rainbow". The reality is that I don't want the main character default be gay or straight. I more want his sixuality to be not mentioned at all. Let the players decide what he or she is like in the previous games.

The sixuality to me has zero importance to me as a gamer. My beef with this whole thing is that I want to be my own person, that's why I always loved fallout because it felt like this was MY adventure.

I would rather they get rid of sixuality all together just to make it fair for straight and gays alike.

Thing is, there are same-six encounters without those perks (I believe Jimmy does not need Confirmed Bachelor for six). Does that say anything? Not really. Do the perks necessarily say anything about the character if they take the perk, but chooses not to use the options? No.

um ok that explains why suddenly I could not reply to something...

that said the point is that were talking about what goes on in a games Story. a lot of games that actually have a story in there somewhere have some fairly hard restrictions in place that break the story if you try to change them,

Luke and Leia were siblings, and not lovers.

Spock is the child of a Human-Vulcan relationship

Laura Croft is the tomb raider.

Kazooie is a Red bird with a yellow beak who rides around in a bears backpack.

The Warrior was a tribal.

The Lone Survivor is the Married parent of a spouse and child who he lost in part because he decided to trust Vault Tech because of the chance that something would go wrong. you can make whatever you want of that backstory. (perhaps the spouse is a good friend and one of you wanted a child who would not be a "bastard" and then WWIII happend

In what way has Fallout 4 been 'insensitive fun'? There is nothing about Fallout 4 that says your character isn't covering up their sixuality or that Post-War they didn't start to explore their sixuality. OP is making mountains out of mole hills, nothing more, nothing less.
