Why am I heterosixual?

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 3:54 am

It's a simple question. I haven't been here in some time, but this is the best place I know to ask it.

In this game, my character weather I am a man or a woman I am heterosixual. Now, I am heterosixual in real life. However, many people in real life are not. Why should they be forced to role play a heterosixual character? So many other games do it, but to my knowledge this is the first game Fallout to force the character into a heterosixual relationship. Even The Elder Scrolls games didn't do that. I don't see why this is in a game like fallout that is designed to have the world reflect the player and their character.

Don't you think with games like Last of Us: Left Behind and Mass Effect 3 this is a step back? I'd really like to see this fixed. It could be even explained with some dialogue with an NPC:

Diversity in videogames always improves them because it adds layers of realism to a fictional world. Doing so would be a good for players and the game.

Because parody 50's culture. Ain't it obvious?

There's probably some wink wink, nudge nudge homosixual things going on. But those are going to be concealed because that fits into the game's world. You'd actually be taking away 'layers of realism' or at least style by anachronistic cultural value of 'It's OK to be gay'. (Actually, wasn't the 50's a period of gay being used for happiness rather than homosixuality?)

There's another thread like this, so I'm going to say the something similar to what I said over there.

The Fallout Universe before the Great War is an exaggerated version of our 1950s, one in which getting married was an absolute priority. Thus, closeted homosixuals would sometimes marry heterosixually (it still happens as a means to "fit in") because it was expected of them, not because it reflected their sixuality. If you want an easy example based out of that era, see Sal Romano from Mad Men.

There's your window for a homosixual player character.

You are what you are. The one thing you are not is your character. Fallout 4 is a story about a family man/woman who escaped into a vault when the missiles launched and later wakes up 200 years after the nuclear war.

Help tell that story yes, or help tell that story no. Nobody is being forced to play ... at least by anyone but themselves. I'm sure I won't be able to help myself.

I'm getting tired of this.

I'm gay, a member of the Pink pistol's and frankly the whole thing does not bother me.

Lets be blunt here, Bethesda is a studio that seems stuffed full of clueless heterosixuals who don't know how to have a real relationship with the Opposite six(never mind how to translate that into game) as it is, so the fact that they don't bother to include it is kind of a relief. Seriously the Bathroom sceen has literaly been there Best romantic writing in a game that involves the player character and a "love interest" EVER...

Seriously having my straight friends try to set me up on a date with some other random guy just because hey Hes gay! I bet we can set him up with this other gay guy we know! got old years ago.

so get real, not everything in the world is some kind of statement about or against us.

Considering homosixuality for the PC has been represented since Fallout 1, yes, it is an issue as they are removing a layer of roleplaying capabilities for no good reason.

probably because they want to tell a better story than usual and that involves taking some of the blank slate away in favor of a richer more defined story more akin to their closest rpg competition

Yeah, I think it still works. Given the hyperbolic 50s ethos, your character could easily be using their spouse as a beard. Making things up has always been a big part of creating your own character.

Does it matter?

If a game is awesome and the protagonist gay I would still enjoy it. I love Tomb Raider and I play as a woman.

You don't always get to perfectly copy yourself in a game. I mean, how many games out there have a ginger protagonist? That's what I thought.

@Gabriel77Dan: What's stopping you from roleplaying that after you leave the Vault? As others have stated in this thread and others, when portraying the proverbial family unit of the 50's, it will be heterosixual. If some folks can't wrap their minds around that and don't want to roleplay a homosixual after leaving the Vault, then I don't know what to recommend other than don't purchase the game.

You win this thread.

OP, Bethesda is not known for gripping romance stories. If they can barely handle romance stories between heterosixual people, what makes you think they could handle a homosixual romance story well?

But really, does it actually matter?

@ Displaced Okie- I'm not sure if you can just change to your spouse/another gender. Not sure how that'd work given what we know of FO4's tutorial...

Going by that logic, racial segregation should still be present in the Pre-War universe.

Has it even been confirmed that you can't change the six of your spouse? I know what we saw last night, but nothing that said you couldn't. That said, why in the world do some people expect everything to cater to 1-3% of the population? Are tattoos in the game? Inkies are a much larger population than homosixuals, just sayin.....there's no possible way the devs could include every societal/biological possibility, I think they do pretty good job. It doesn't take much imagination to RP into whatever orientation you want, hell, we are playing a game where a futuristic 50's style world has been nuked and is rebuilding, we have laser weapons, intelligent robots, hovercraft, jet packs, the ability to stop time and take precision shots, carry hundreds of pounds of stuff with no backpack....and you're telling me that you can't past the possibility that your character might have to be *gasp* like 95+% of the population? C'mon fire up that imagination, how many of us felt we were truely trapped into playing 18-19 year old kid in Fallout 3 I know I didn't, I just pushed through the tutorial and got my crusty ol' codger that looked older than the father I was supposed to look for.....no need to get hung up on such a small detail in such a large game.

That said, I did like how Skyrim let you role-play a gay character and marry same-gendered characters. Here's hoping you can do that here in Fallout 4. C'mon, we can already build our houses, why can't we find a partner (same gender or no) and have them live with us?

That baby in the crib? That said you couldn't. You know, the super plot important baby that is going to look like you and your spouse when it is all grown up and ready to cause drama and angst in the storyline. You can't be gay because Bethesda needs you to have a baby for the plot to work.

It's a shame people are getting locked out of a choice, but that's why.

Gay people "have" babies all the time in our world.....why wouldn't it be so in the future?

What part of the post tutorial plot has the baby been confirmed in, do you have a copy of the story that the rest of us haven't seen?

QFT, Ever play Skyrim? Sure you can marry anything in that game. But if you want romance best to download a mod (and there are several really good ones). Frankly, I don't want Bethesda to do anything romantic. Let the modders do it (I'm assuming Fallout 4 will allow modding?)
