Why do high level draugr use ebony weapons?

Post » Sun Oct 28, 2012 6:12 am

I know I'm starting to sound like I'm obsessed with the draugr, and thats damn right. I thought the ebony weaponry are dunmer made and have a really dunmer look on them, so why do the ancient draugr deathlords use them instead of dragonbone weapons?

I am hoping that the comment made by the artist that ebony is Dunmer is a mistake and it is in fact Nord / Imperial in origin. Leave the Dunmer to lighter armors like Ordinator armor, Chitin & bonemold

There's ebony in Skyrim, so all that's required is the smithing skill. Draugr are supernatural beings anyway, so making weapons from the 'blood of the gods' makes some sense. On top of it all, the Nords came from Solstheim, where there is ebony as well - hence it stands to reason that the Draugr are very familiar with ebony from their days as living Nords.

I don't know the reason, but they look cool and I am happy to get an ebony weapon after slaying a deathlord

Ebony originates from a volcano in morrowind IIRC. But there's got to be some kind of a reason behind it, unless bethesda simply wanted to add a high-level weapon to high-level draugrs, to catch up with the level scaling.

yes there are ebony mines in skyrim; but what really bugs me about the ebony weapons is that they seem very elven in design; not nordic like the ancient weapons the lower level draugr use: i just wish the ebony was nordic in design or that there was some kind of nordic high tier weaponry for deathlords:

sorry my keyboard is acting up on steam browser:

I'm with you OP. Yeah, Ebony armor is a Dunmer knockoff of Daedric armor. Part of the importance of the Empire gaining access to Vvardenfell during Morrowind was their gaining access to the ebony ore there.

I wish you could take a certain design of weapon and make from any material you wanted. For example, the design of the steel greatsword as it is now, only make it with ebony, glass, orichalcum, etc. I like the steel greatsword design and think made with ebony would look outstanding. I also like the design of the ebony blades, but think they would look better made of refined malachite. The orc blades would look great made from steel, you get the picture. Just my opinion, but would be cool!! The same would be cool for the armor styles.

Didn't the Nords come from Atmora?

LOL Nords were born on the Throat of the World and migrated North to Atmora. They came back with Ysgrammor a long time later.

My guess is the Nords / Nedes must have been capable of making ebony weapons or else there is no way that the Dreugh could have them. Nords and Orsimer are supposed to be the two bests smithing races in Tamriel. Ancient Nords were I believe famous for being able to work normal steel to be very strong (I think this is the logic being skyforge steel). I think it was Nord smiths are also famous for making chainmail armor (as in Nordic Mail). We also get ebony mail

There are ebony mines in Skyrim and there was an ebony mine on the frozen island of Solstheim. All the ebony mines of Vvardenfell were Imperial owned. No Dunmer factions or high ranking officers wore ebony.

The Imperial Dragon armor of the Emperor and the set that your character gets a set at the end of the main quest in Oblivion looks like it is made from ebony. Imperials have the same ancestry as Nords so we see a common theme

I actually want the Imperials / Nords to have the ebony weapons / armor as seen in my sig. Imperials unless going for tacky or low ranking legionary armor are missed out.

Although, in a manner of speaking you're right in that high quality gear (like ebony and glass) didn't really appear as random loot, but were hand-placed in certain places and on certain NPCs.

Two rich Dunmer nobles with all the wealth and money to buy ebony ore from the Imperial East Empire Company. None of the Dunmer sects or temple / palace guards wear ebony.
