The only highwaymen in the game are male Khajiit.

You can give them 100 gold, watch them walk away, then loose an arrow right into the 'Shoot Me!' sign on their back. This not only gets your gold back with little fuss, but rids the roads of another crook. Based on their stunning lack of smarts, my theory is that highwaymen are folks that flunked out of normal bandit school. I have no idea why they are all Khajiit though. The cat folk are certainly not stupid as a race; in fact they tend to be quite clever.

Maybe there are others on the consoles to make it a little more individual :D But seriously, I am sure there were redwardons. My boyfriend has also seen argonians.

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Main_Page It's a very helpful tool for looking up things about the Elder Scrolls games.

Personally I've only ever encountered male khajiit highwaymen as well.

Thank you. There are several tools for Skyrim and Oblivion I do not really know but everyone talks about. Good to know what it is, otherwise I would feel stupid :D

I encountered a redguard highwayman once. I even have a picture to prove it. It was probably due to a bug.

I took a look at Highwaymen in the Construction Set. There are four: BanditHighwayman01, BanditHighwayman02, BanditHighwayman03 and BanditHighwayman04. They are all Khajiit, all male and they are all scaled to the player's level. The only difference between them that I can see is in appearance and stats. BanditHighwayman01 can be anywhere from player level to 5 levels below player level. The other three can be player level to 4 levels below player level.

My experience from hundreds of highwayman encounters over the years has been totally consistent with both what Pseron expressed as well as this quote from UESP Wiki:
"Highwaymen are a specialized variety of Bandit that you will encounter along the main roads. They are always male Khajiit and always wear light armor."
Reference link: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Highwaymen

I doubt the PS3/XBox content is different than the PC content in this case, but invite screenshots to disprove. Again, we're talking highwaymen, not normal bandits.

Don't confuse highwaymen, who stop you and ask for gold, and regular bandits who just attack without any dialog. Bandits can be Redguards as well as Khajiit, and both sixes. There's at least one location where the bandit may be close enough to the highwayman for you to encounter both. Then there's the bowmen, who can be Bosmer or Dunmer.

Unless you're using the latest version of the UOP, they don't even take your gold. They just walk away and take your word that you've paid. "Stunning lack of smarts" is an understatement.

And, if they do take your gold, you can just go into sneak mode as soon as they turn their backs, and pickpocket it back from them. :)

probably cause the cat-folk are dirty thieves (kidding). I've had them kill hostile wildlife for me before if you pay their "fee".

It was a bug. These wierd little things happen to all of us. Those of us who have been at this for years can tell many amusing stories about the strange things that have happened in our games. The Elder Scrolls games are incredibly complex and it's to be expected that things will go wrong from time to time.

I know what kind of bandits we're talking about. Really. But I have already seen Imperials; Argonians and other species. Maybe it was a bug (not one of the really bad ones, so I wouldn't have cared), but they were there!

Highwaymen are not bandits, though. If they're labeled "bandit," it's a different faction from the highwaymen, who always talk to you before attacking.

I know I met a redguard highwayman once (somewhere between Anvil and Skingrad/Skingrad - IC) He tried to engage me in a conversation but I don't think he actually spoke.
I played an unmodded version and I know I took a screencap but I think it's on my old computer. It's frustrating, really

I don't think any of us doubts that it happened. I know I believe you. I believe Niza saw a female Highwayman in her game too. I don't doubt either of these things. We're simply saying that these things are not a normal part of the game. They are bugs.
