Why isn't Skyrim immensely popular?

Most famous anticipated game in the world and history to me.

Thats a contradiction!

Skyrim itself is a paradox simply because it will be so awesome.

im 13 in grade 7 but only 2 other people in THE SCHOOL talk about like their going to by it it depressing there all playing cod games which are great games just lacking single player fun when your friends leave you got nothing to do (sort of anyway) thats why skyrim is so cool you can play it for hours and get through so little of the full game but feel like you've accomplished a great deal and its satisfying and the next day you can play again complete hardly anything but have a completely unique gameplay experience that you cant have with the cods playing on small enclosed containing levels

Define popular?

Every "gamer" I kow has heard of Skyrim. Probably 2/3 gamers I know have pre-ordered Skyrim. There's a huge amount of people that aren't gamers that have no idea what it is... but that is to be expected. Hell most of my non-gamer friends wouldn't even know what you meant if you said "360" or "PS3" or "ATI" or "Intel".

Reading back through these posts, I see a common, among the post that describe this unpopularity. That common is, school kids in my grade.

You know what? That's the way it should be. The game is rated 'M'.

I think this game will be one of the most enjoyable games I will ever play, and honestly, I think that it will be one of the best games of all time. However, I'm quite disappointed that Skyrim isn't as popular as it is good.
Why aren't gamers across all genres talking about Skyrim?
I mean, I go to a school with over 60 gamers in my grade, and to my surprise, none of them know what Skyrim is. And I mean, they aren't just the COD players, they play a wide variety of Rtss, Fpss, MMOs, etc.
This is pretty shocking to me.

That is why. You're in high school bra. Elder Scrolls is a mature ESRB. Not sure if you're a senior or whatever, but most parents (As far as I know) are really annoying about buying M rated games.

Don't know if anyone really cares but gameinformer's September issue featured a poll where they asked "Which one holiday game are you the most excited about and plan to buy?" Skyrim won with just over 1800 votes (32.6%). Batman: AA 14.3%, Uncarted 3 12%, Battlefield 3 10.8%, AC Revelations 9.1%, COD had 6.5%, and there are a few others but you get the idea.

Developers really should just start working on FPS that are exclusively multiplayer instead of throwing on these half-assed 'campaigns'.

Wow...That's some pretty strong poison, you just threw out there. In a TES forum, no less.

The 50 / 50, action / RPG genre will ALWAYS outway the popularity of any run and gun, bang bang shoot'em up FPS...Always.

There isn't one person I have brought skyrim up with so far, without them going "Oh dude, I am so looking forward to this game." Granted, half of these people haven't even been introduced to any TES game yet, save for a few with minimal contact of watching Oblivion be played.

To the question of OP:

Because is not multiplayer;

Because don't have a soccer ball;

Because don't have modern firearms.

Most gamers do not follow video game news. Most go to the store one day and see a sequel to a game series they like, or perhaps an advertisemant, and that's how they make their purchase decisions.
