Why isn't Skyrim immensely popular?

Post » Sat Oct 15, 2011 9:30 am

Maybe because not everyone likes same things?

I know a guy who claims that TES is totally stupid game for mindless people and can't understand how can someone play a game which doesn't have an end (he plays liner games which have standard beginning and end).
He also laughs at Skyrim story and claims that it's idiotic since 'How can a mere human, even though he has dragon blood in him, can fight of a dragon who is so large that he can eat world?'
He also claims that it's a game for pathetic people who don't have life so they have to live an imaginary one trough a video game (this is also his opinion on RPGs in general). >_>

I... I can't argue with what he said... but there are the good stuff of course that make me want to play it... I think I'm going to lie down for a moment...

All my gamer pals, especially the PC-centric ones, are pretty excited for this game along with Arkham City and SWTOR. I'd say any gamer with a brain is looking forward to this game. If there are gamers that are indifferent to Skyrim or just dismiss it because they are convinced of getting some other game, they obviously did not watch the demo footage. The random dragon fights is all I really need for replay value. :tes:

I think this game will be one of the most enjoyable games I will ever play, and honestly, I think that it will be one of the best games of all time. However, I'm quite disappointed that Skyrim isn't as popular as it is good.
Why aren't gamers across all genres talking about Skyrim?
I mean, I go to a school with over 60 gamers in my grade, and to my surprise, none of them know what Skyrim is. And I mean, they aren't just the COD players, they play a wide variety of Rtss, Fpss, MMOs, etc.
This is pretty shocking to me.

You're being a little dramatic here. Best game of all time? Most enjoyable game you'll ever play? Really? You haven't even played it yet. Oblivion looked pretty fantastic too before it was released. Don't get ahead of yourself.

That being said, it is very popular. I don't really know why it's not where you are, but it could just be people don't want to talk about it with you because of how ridiculously hyper you seem to be about it. It looks like it'll be a good game, and everyone's hopeful that Bethesda has learned from their blunders with Oblivion, but by no means can anyone say this is a good game or will be a great game. That's just speculation and anyone who's played Oblivion would be [censored] to be absolutely positive that Skyrim is going to be amazing. Mellow out a bit and you might notice as all the rest of us have that Skyrim DEFINITELY has people talking.

It's very popular. It just doesn't have the advertising of games like Gears, Uncharted, COD, Zelda or Batman

Judging by the quantity of pre-orders, Skyrim seems to be quite popular.

As of October 8, there were nearly 900,000 pre-orders for Skyrim on PS3 and Xbox. This excludes PC retail and PC digital downloads. Across all platforms combined there have been probably well over 1 million pre-orders, comparable to games like Battlefield 3, which is only a couple of weeks from release date and http://games.ign.com/articles/120/1200238p1.html based on 1.5 million pre-orders.

Weird, from that pre order site i would have though PC pre order would be higher then Diablo 3 but this shows without console the gaming industry would not have the amount of cash to improve. Be nice to console peeps PC players :foodndrink:

The reason why is not such a huge game is because it take time and effort to really enjoy it and people seldom have much time and most are not willing to put in the effort i think.

looking over the last eleven months of this forum makes me feel like that wouldn't be a bad thing.

RPGs are niche. open-world RPGs are even more niche. coupled with the fact that Bethesda's been pretty much mum since the trailer as far as marketing goes, i don't get why people would be surprised.

The sad part about it is it's not that RPG popularity has declined, but instead that RPG popularity has grown slower than other genres. The video game market is many times the size it was in the 1990s, and some less popular genres just haven't grown at the pace required to maintain their old market share. I think modern sound and graphics plays a large part of it too. In the past there could be text heavy RPGs with a ton of backstory and such, and tons of NPCs. In an RPG world of sprites and text boxes a lack of voice actor variety and NPC character model variety didn't matter. There could be a small handful of NPC sprites with palette swaps etc. NPCs were remembered by their personalities more than their voice or looks. It takes a lot more money nowadays to make a game like that, and thankfully TES is popular enough to get the budgets required to continue. I don't think the market exists anymore for a game like Xenogears sadly, because the character modeling and voice work would cost way too much to justify it. (Xenogears has a ridiculous amount of story text and character pvssyr. No other game I've played comes close to comparing. Its plain text script is something like 800,000 text characters long.)

Bah! Skyrim is getting as much attention as it deserves (which is to say a lot within the gaming community, I'm trying to make a compliment). I can think of many more titles that deserve a lot more love than they are actually given.

Thankfully TES still has depth, and it isn't constant non-stop action made for short attention span players.

Also I'm glad TES isn't advertised with slow motion action scenes, big explosions, and "six appeal" things.

RPGs aren't a very popular game genre. Most people play sports games (because for some reason getting off their lazy behinds to play some for real isn't as interesting)... Or FPSs... Or MMOs... Etc.

There's a smaller population of people who follow things like Elder Scrolls, and there is enough distraction with other titles that it's possible to go unnoticed, I suppose.

It is probably the most popular RPG this year. I don't think it needs more attention.
