Why isn't Skyrim immensely popular?

Post » Sat Oct 15, 2011 4:37 pm

I think this game will be one of the most enjoyable games I will ever play, and honestly, I think that it will be one of the best games of all time. However, I'm quite disappointed that Skyrim isn't as popular as it is good.
Why aren't gamers across all genres talking about Skyrim?
I mean, I go to a school with over 60 gamers in my grade, and to my surprise, none of them know what Skyrim is. And I mean, they aren't just the COD players, they play a wide variety of Rtss, Fpss, MMOs, etc.
This is pretty shocking to me.

the trend in popularity is multiplayer games and first person shooters. That is why this holiday season will be dominated by battlefield 3 and modern warfare 3.

Its quite simple, Kids like guns, find out about cod, beg they're mother to buy it for them, they get brainwashed, and I'm glad Skyrim isn't as popular, could you Imagine all of the CoD kids on these forums?

It's incredibly popular for an RPG. Or actually any game in general.

Most of my friends who generally just play shooters and the likes have taken a huge interest in Skyrim.

For the record I live in the Netherlands and people I hang with (and myself) are generally 20-23 years of age.

Because you can't blow someones head off with a sweet gun from an epic distance. No but seriously, I prefer the low-key approach ES games take to advertising. I don't want to see Nord warriors slaying dragons on the side of Mountain Dew bottles...

RPG games are still somewhat of a niche. A large one at that, but nothing compared to games like COD in terms of popularity.

Skyrim is immensely popular. At least, compared to when I started playing The Elder Scrolls (Morrowind) ten years ago. Bethesda has really established itself in the gaming industry, conquering more and more hearts and souls over the years, since Oblivion.
But I have to admit, I don't know a lot of big Skyrim fans. I recently spoke one person that knew about Morrowind and I was very surprised and I at least have one friend plus my brother of which I know they will play Skyrim.

(Offtopic: Nice to see someone choosing the Dutch word for "dragon" for their name, Draak. :))

it is far more popular with people 18 and over, Oblivion came out when most of us were just getting done with lord of the rings movies and such. and TES has been around for a while.

the gamers now can't even appreciate Halo for what it did to bring FPS to consoles and all they want is instant gratification in games like cod or gta...

thats why

I am curious to know what the Oblivion vs Skyrim Advertisemant cost is to the other. I can't find anything at the moment. Perhaps something to do with it. I think as time gets super close to release, it will spread like wildfire.

At my sixth form quite a few people are anticipating it, but also it's an RPG and it's a little complicated for some.

well you did say grade, which implies an earlier level of school. I never described myself as a first grade college student.
