Why no Jinxed?

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 6:12 pm

I assumed it was because there was no critical failure system in the game. Turns out there is... so why didn't Jinxed make the cut? Would be much more interesting and character-defining than Four-Eyes, and high Luck / melee or unarmed Jinx was a solid archetype in FO2.

Where was it confirmed that we have critical failures in NV?

The enemy can have critical failures depending on player luck.
There is no jinxed because this is not a game built on jokes made for a niche audience that enjoys engineered annoyance.

Good point. But then again, to poke a hole in your statement, Wild Wasteland in is

Wild Wasteland just makes things wackier, not maddeningly frustrating.

But neither does Jinxed, depending on your point of view.

Unforruantely not everything can get put into the game... There was a company that tried that, and well they went bankrupt although their game is about to be released, something about a Nuclear Aristocrat if I remember right.... Lord GammaRay? No, that doesn't sound right....

I never took Jinxed in FO1 or 2. While it might be fun to watch everybody else's weapons explode around me, the novelty would gradually wear off. At the other end of the spectrum, I'm not the kind of player who gets a giggle out of doing what is supposed to be a perfectly normal function in the game (shooting a gun) and having my character get horrendously maimed by himself because a random number generator said so.

That's why it's better to be melee or unarmed with 10 luck + Jinxed.

Did the 10 luck reduce you chances of critical failure? And did being a melee or unarmed character result in less grievious injuries to yourself for rolling a critical failure?

I think that luck decided the chance of it. Not 100% sure though.
And about melee and unarmed, you will still get critical failures.
The difference is that the melee weapon can be picked up and reused.
And Unarmed weapons don't break IIRC.
While small/big/energy breaks and can't be repaired.

So it's a lot more economical to play a melee or unarmed character with jinxed.
Or you can just be a diplomat and try to stay out of fights and use sneak a lot.

IIRC the luck basically cancelled the negative effect for YOU, but not the enemies.

Yup. But it also depended on the enemies luck stat as well since every living being, organic or not, followed the SPECIAL.

You know I've watched someone on youtube playing a blind jinxed build. Good fun to watch.
